Actually VegasJ, I have the exact same setup (Win98se, Gimp) as you and I've been wondering the same thing.

2002-07-03 02:08:09 PM
Vegasj and Chick3_16: Your operating system should not be a problem. However I don't know if Gimp has any Gif animation tools included. I use Paint Shop Pro which bundles gif animation with it. Usually it's about $100, but I picked it up at a computer fair for $20. Either way it's a heck of a lot less than Photoshop.

Vegasj and Chick3_16: I did a quick Google search and found this:
Making Gifs using Gimp
Hope this helps.

VegasJ--I use a little free GIF animation program I downloaded off of CNET, called Unfreeze. It's not fancy, smancy and but it's real easy to use. It's freeware. I don't make a lot of animations, but it really does a good job. It's not pro-quality, but it does get the job done. Here's the download site for the company that offers it.

No offense, but am I the only one getting sick of animated gifs in Photoshop contests? I guess I just fear the time when it starts becoming a Flash Animation contest..

2002-07-03 05:51:52 PM
I think I'm going to have to agree with you on that one, Wldncrzy14. (no offense to any of you animated gif'ers)

2002-07-03 06:06:02 PM
Being an animated giffer, I see your point. Everyone that submits posts them inline at 100K and above. BAD KITTY! You need to make a point of it to post at 50K and below. I myself try to do that, ok 60K max.
Now as far as this contest is concerned, I can't see topping it so I won't try.
The guy is standing there getting kicked in the nuts. Duh.

Typingsux (love that name, by the way), TheEndless, etal... I too agree with you. I don't make a habit of making too many animations for the very reasons you stated. I make a few, seems like it goes in spurts, but too many can spoil a good photoshop thread. Every now and then is fine, but I prefer just good ol' fashioned photoshopping...

I hate discussions on the 'shop threads, but from the FARQ:

You may have an internet connection that operates at twice the speed of light, but many of your cofarkers still rely on the trusty old 56k dialup routine. Do them, and the internet in general, a favor and compress your images! (In Photoshop use the "Save For Web" option under the file menu.) Most of the images you post will be between 15-30k. Consider linking rather than displaying an image if it is larger than 70k. Exceptions are made when it's obvious, such as a banner or animated gif contest.

The recent worldcom would be exempt, but this nut kicking one isn't. Also, there's a 140K gif in the upcoming playmate photoshop. That's ridiculous. Not to insult, but it sucked to boot. ;)
