Love TF caption:

A young boy holds a large knife as he waits for permission to cut into a cake in Mexico City, April 30, 2002. Two men broke into a supermarket depot in Germany and left with just a cake, authorities said on Tuesday. (Henry Romero/Reuters)

"A young boy holds a large knife as he waits for permission to cut into... "

Into what? The text just runs off like that.

"In the largest global disaster in recorded history, the US is about to be hit by...."

Did this happen outside a mall, where you can buy cakes made in a mall, by mall employees who are paid by the mall?

Samoan?

From tfa:
Police arrested the two men, aged 29 and 41, shortly after the late night break-in and recovered the stolen cake. A search of the men's flat uncovered no more loot.

Why didn't the police pump the men's stomachs? Afraid of what they would find?

2006-08-29 1:00:19 PM
i guess the germans were also holding this mexican boy hostage , making him cut and eat the cake. those bastards.

I'm gonna go ahead and say the writer isn't reponsible for actually posting the article. So an editor or web guy is responsible for the photo. yeah.

2006-08-29 1:01:09 PM
Yeah, Yahoo does that a lot. They take one word from the story and put a picture next to it that has nothing to do with the story. In this case the word was "cake". They could have also chosen "German" and put a picture of Hitler there.

It's a bird, it's a plane...

No, Itzehoe!!

A pic that's 4 years old, to boot.

Was it really such a bad idea to run this non-story without a pic, if there was no more appropriate stock imagery than this?

2006-08-29 1:03:07 PM
I think that the kid is Arab, because then the article would reference a Pink Floyd related song. If you immediately know which one, you're as big a Floyd fanatic as I am!

2006-08-29 1:03:40 PM
That child is clearly incapable of putting pee-pee in the Coke. Even as a joke. I call shennanigans on this headline.

2006-08-29 1:04:00 PM

could they not find another stock photo of just a cake?

baby cuts cake in mexico city in 2002 has tons to do with germans stealing cake.
jerks.

and I'm down with baxco's idea.

2006-08-29 1:07:49 PM
2 ghey guys stole a lucious cake in Germany, took it to Mexico City where they kidnapped a toddler named Ernesto to cut their stolen cake. Immediately after the photo was taken, Isreali airstrikes set the cake on fire filling the evening sky with dark smoke.

It's a "Reuters story", you have to sorta fill in the blanks or make something up. It's not like it's real news.

2006-08-29 1:08:11 PM
If this is Germany, the kid could be Turkish. They are sort of like German equivolent of Mexicans. Maybe the writer adapted the image caption to American culture by calling him a Mexican.

/Stretch maybe?

"Sometimes people just come up with crazy ideas," said Hermann Schwichtenberg, a spokesman for police in the northern town of Itzehoe. "Now we've seen everything."

Two guys steal a cake and you've "seen everything"?

elchip - As frightening as your edited version of that pic is, I believe it would be an added bonus if you included one of those pointy straw hats.

And maybe an "O RRY?"

This just in from the Bush Administration: it was yellow cake.

2006-08-29 1:14:19 PM
I wish these Chinese babies would bother to learn their native language. It's insulting to Mexicans and Americans.

We should also fine companies that use illegal Chinese baby labor. But then I guess the cost of bok choy and that miniature corn would skyrocket.

Damn Zipperbacks.

Chinese, Mexicans, Germans, what's the difference? They're all foreigners and they hate freedom and even worse they probably hate Foreigner. Everyone knows that Foreigner is way better than foreigners.
