Surprisingly, the cost of fuel has not affected the popularity of the large SUV among car thieves. The full-size SUV segment remains the most stolen segment, including such vehicles as the Cadillac Escalade and the Land Rover Range Rover.

There seems a striking correlation between 'use of vehicle type in rap video' and 'vehicle type stolen'... kinda makes you think.

I once saw a guy driving a car with the alarm on down Lexington Ave in NYC. No one seemed to care. Is that a "working" car alarm?

On a side note, I also saw a taxi overshoot a light and spin out, then drive back around and get in line for the light, just before a patrol car passed through the intersection. No damage done, thought things were all good. Then 6 cop cars come out of nowhere and surround his cab. It's New York, sure...but how did they all know and get there so fast?

you lose your key, it'll cost you the price of two new keys, and a replacement key module. including labor, thats about $2300.

oh, plus whatever the cost of a tow to the dealership is.

I had a 96 Integra GSR, stolen once, almost stolen twice but the idiot tried to saw through the steering wheel to get the club off. All it did was disfigure the steering wheel and break the airbag, still had to pay the insurance deductible to fix it. Good times!

invest in a good movement-sensitive lighting system around your house instead

Wow, looks like that trade-in for that '03 Ford Taurus was a good deal (hey, i needed a car urgently and it was the only thing in my price range). Guess I can leave the keys in the ignition and the doors unlocked. You'd think it was a Yugo.

For farking farks sake... I wish they told you that stuff at the dealership. This leads me to imagine the future scenario in which you can total a really old benz just by losing the key.

/That would be fun to explain to the insurance company.

Does every B18-swapped Civic in the country have a stolen engine? All the articles I've read today make it seem like only street racers want these things.

I suspect they're stolen because they're a Honda-Acura product. The Accord used to be the big theft car.

CLICKITY-POP

what are you going to do, steal ashtray change?

If you're lucky, the thief will merely steal your ignition system and hack it to steal a different Mercedes.

FROM THE LINK:

Inside the car, mechanics discovered a technological treasure trove: an original Mercedes electronic ignition system and custom Mercedes fuses, all wired with alligator clips to the dashboard and to the fuse box underneath the driver's seat. The car also held a Pelican PDA carrying case and a wireless RFID-signal-sniffing antenna. Investigators suspect that Hamed spliced in his own ignition system and power source, then used the PDA to upload pirated software to the car's computer to disable the transponder and swap the two cars' GPS tracking numbers.

Anything that drives can be stolen.

That stuff always gives me a laugh. You can get you engine rebuilt for that. The "high tech" car parts are such a scam as they're usually the cheapest parts in the thing.

Dat's why my S4 uses an APR lockout. Unless the thief is carrying an extra ECU, they're SOL.

Of course, that doesn't stop my car from being hit by every dumbass on the road.

yeah it's a scam, but getting anything at the stealership is a scam.

and if your car does get stolen...good luck getting your insurance company to pay up.

not everything on a new mercedes is engineered perfectly, but they did get the anti-theft right. The ignition isn't even on the steering column, and the wheel locking mechanism is separate as well.

2006-08-02 7:28:51 PM
I see Major Thomb is yet another person that ignores R&D costs.

The iPod costs, part wise, less than $100 to make. Yet they sell for $300. No, it's not a 3x markup, it's part R&D cost recovery.

Those newfangled ignition-device things in cars are stupid...

They are much like the protections on PS2 and Xbox that 'prevent' you from playing unlicensed discs....

easily compromised by teenagers.

Feh. I had an Integra. It was stolen twice. The first time, they took the spoiler, the steering wheel, the gear shift knob, instrument panel from the dash, *and the worn-out wiper blades*.

A week after I got it back from the shop (ignition was punched, of course), I went out in the morning and it was gone. This time it was found a week later. All light assemblies, including the dome light in the passenger compartment, gone. Engine, gone. Transmission, gone. Seats, gone. Everything farking gone. The only things left were the radiator (hey! it had just started leaking, apparently), and the half-dozen O'Reilly books I had in the boot. Apparently they weren't interested in Perl.

I miss that car. My wife won't get a car with a manual transmission, so I'm stuck in a Sentra.
