submitter: 2003: "President Bush is an idiot for failing to talk about root causes of Mideast violence." 2006: "President Bush is an idiot for talking about root causes of Mideast violence"

submitter, I think the point of the article is more about the flip-flopping of the attitude towards "root causes", not about Bush talking/not talking about the root causes of Mideast violence.

Unless you just wanted to be snarky.

I was here to say the same thing. I see this must be "let's put words in people's mouths and greelight the article" day.

I think the point is elchip is that Bush is using the "root causes" arguement is really just a stall tactic that prevents him from having to tell the Israelis they've gone far enough.

I think it's high time we reinstated "reading for comprehension" exams in public schools. Submitter fails to grasp what the article was attempting to say: Conservatives have ridiculed liberals for wanting to discuss "root causes" of crime and conflicts up until now, when suddenly Pres. Bush doesn't want a cease fire until the "root cause" of the conflict is dealt with. Abandoning a position for convenience is hypocrisy of the first order. Of course, failing to apply logic and rational thought to problem-solving is a major shortcoming as well.

Wow, smitty entirely missed the point of that article paragraph.

Is this the same Harry Shearer who does all the voice work on the Simpsons?

/just wondering how that qualifies him to comment on... well, anything

The CraneMeister: just wondering how that qualifies him to comment on... well, anything

probably the same qualifications that allow you to comment on ...well, anything.

2006-07-26 3:26:11 PM
So, basically we're just splitting hairs over the particulars of WHY he's an idiot...But we seem to have pretty well established that he is.

Works for me.

Hey, we have low standards around here, most people think you're a falacious pile of unintelligable elephant dung, but the mods let you comment here anyways.

If you aren't listening to Shearer's Le Show on public radio, you are missing out.

You can get streams/downloads of it here:

That leaves only one conclusion... President Bush is an idiot. Next topic.

How DARE Harry Shearer, some has-been writer for television and media for 30+ years, who has written movies and television shows and studied culture, history and media for decades. How dare he have AN OPINION?!

Now you CraneMeister, we all know your opinion is far superior, considering the years of service you've provided to... um, masturbating? And the countless decades of experience you have in... maintaining your ignorance despite being overwhelmed with multiple sources of information... yes we want to know what you think, not some famous, world-wise, world traveller who has decades of experience in media and various cultures.

Of course this poof had nothing to do with it over 40 years ago.

/don't care if you're a poof
//most folks don't know he was a poof
///and a lousy motorcycle rider

Bad analogy, IMO. However I have loved Mr. Shearer ever since I saw him compete in Men's Synchronized Swimming back in the 80s.

Interesting. Other than Shearer's voiceover work on the Simpsons, I don't know anything about him. Didn't know if he did a lot of political commentary or if this is another celebrity jumping in simply because he can. And my apologies if, as was apparently the case, it seemed I was slamming the dude.

But you did a great job of illustrating yourself how silly it looks to assume the worst about someone when you know almost nothing. Appreciate it!

Proper headline:

President Bush, ridiculer of root causes, now seeks the root cause of Mideast Violence.

Smitty or Greenlighter should RTFA.

One lousy accident and someone gets labeled. Sheesh.
He called it. 80 years ago.

Uh... Subby needs a cockpunch. Two, actually.
One for misrepresenting the article.
And another for posting an article that's only one paragraph.

/anything longer gets subby's lips tired

Remember a-hole shrub talkin about root causes

"They hate us cause we're free"

Yeah wasn't that brilliant

2006-07-26 6:13:59 PM
>> just wondering how that qualifies him to comment on... well, anything

Yeah why can't people we disagree with be stripped of their right to free speech.

Sounds reasonable to me.

And remember they hate us cause were free

2006-07-26 6:14:30 PM
Why are qualifications being discussed? Televised news programs, the "blogosphere", and the opinion pages of the Wall Street Journal have conclusively demonstrated that any half-wit can not only engage in political commentary but make a living at it.

In other words to you think right wingers have the brain power to learn

If they did they wouldn't be right wingers.

Also,

/just wondering how that qualifies him to comment on... well, anything

Is this like a straw man combined with an ad hominem and a non-sequitor tacked on the end? You should've tried to work a begging-the-question fallacy in there too. B+.

Perhaps Smitty is trying to point out that Pres. Bush's idiocy is wholly unrelated to his talking about the root causes of Mideast violence.

Wait a second, is Bush actually talking about the root causes of violence in the Middle East? Or is he just saying it'd be kind of neat if we did and - LOOK OVER THERE!

2006-07-27 12:11:46 AM
What Bush means by "root causes" is there are still a lot of Arabs who don't want to submit to US/Israeli rule.

2006-07-27 1:02:05 AM
Me, since announced his candidacy: "Bush is an idiot."
