If you're going to be snarky, it helps to spell "chauvinistic" correctly.

I would generally concur that grammer is a problem. Last night on the Yahoo! answers board, the majority of people writing never used proper punctuation.

I, being the snarky bastard that I am, replied with correct answers...sans punctuation. If they can read it, then they have their answer. If they cannot, then their computer is toast.

How often do you hear of proper grammar referred to as "hegmonic" by "the academic right"?

"hegmonic" by "the academic right"?

Do you mean hegemonic?

I would generally concur that grammer(sp) is a problem. Last night on the Yahoo! answers board, the majority of people writing never used proper punctuation.

I,(can't add a sub sentance after one word) being the snarky bastard that I am, replied with correct answers...(this is not a correct use)sans punctuation. If they can read it,(comma not needed) then they have their answer. If they cannot(two words or use can't), then their computer is toast.

I still got your point though. Get mine?

"Cannot" actualy is a word.

I'm as academic-leftish as they come. The CROs of the world would have you believe that that means I'm a snooty asshole, and they're right (although not for the right reasons). So speaking on behalf of my comrades--all of my comrades--there is nothing that makes a snooty asshole academic happier than teeing off on incompetent undergrad writing.

In our defense, we're doing a pretty good job teaching them in college the writing skills they should have learned by the ninth grade. A lot of us care deeply about producing well-rounded, critical-thinking educated young adults. But those first few papers of freshman comp--well, we're just sitting in our beds with a red pen in one hand and a vibrator in the other.

I read the article but I'm not sure what it's arguing. Very poor.

The other day a good friend of mine was lying on his death bed. His name was Fred, and he was a grammarian his whole life. I said: "Fred, are you ok?" And he replied: "I will die soon. Or, I will die presently. Either is correct."

Dear Plueballs:

Everything you wrote is wrong.

2006-07-22 3:28:42 PM
Oh, well, as long as we're going to do that, I teach writing at University, and I make all my students utterly miserable with grammar and spelling and usage quizzes and instruction.

We also spend all semester writing just one paper--because it takes them five rounds of revision to arrive at a 101-level paper.

I don't know whose fault it is, but if they get through my class, they know what is expected of them.

CRO can kiss my redneck ass. They're all about more right-wing in-group/out-group attitude policing. Shut up, assholes, you already have 9/10ths of the Evangelicals, all three branches of the government, and the media.

Larry the Fish:

The original quote scans better:

"Je vais ou je vas mourir, l'un et l'autre se dit ou se disent," which translates loosely as "I am about to -- or I am going to -- die: either expression is correct." -- Last words of Dominique Bouhours, French grammarian

plueballs
The only thing wrong with that post is the misspelling of grammar. In your critique, you misspelled "sentance", and the use of an appositive phrase (your "sub sentance" - which should actually be hyphenated as "sub-sentence") is perfectly acceptable after a single word. Furthermore, cannot is a single word. Look it up.

Next time you try to be snarky, try to have some knowledge of the subject at hand.

/Sure, I still got your point, but what good is that if you look like an idiot?

I could care less about this article. Morans. This is an example of wrong grammar. The correct phrase is "I couldn't care less" . So if you responded to my post by asking me, 'Well, then why did I post here ?" you are a boob. Although the 'moran' comment is correct.

"From my conversations with senior faculty at both North Carolina State and UNC..."

Wow, really? She talked to professors at two colleges in North Carolina? That's some thorough research!

So these are the new centers of the academic left, I guess?

-The spelling and grammar I see every day online and in the real world really is apalling. At first I thought it was just dumbass kids who were too lazy to correct mistakes(often is), but it's pretty universal among the proles. I even see it crop up in printed materials that one would assume were proofread...

2006-07-22 3:31:46 PM
The site that decries the imposition of politics in teaching grammar appears to have no problem imposing politics in the teaching of science.

http://www.campusreportonline.net/main/articles.php?id=1103

The ironic thing here is that if a student in high school didn't get much teaching on grammar, it's not that hard to teach them. But bullshiat like "intelligent design" completely bastardizes the teaching of science, possibly damaging forever the ability of the student forced to learn it to learn true scientific method.

Executive Monkey

There's only one ? in the entire article when I read it. To me that sounds like a browser or operating system issue on your end.
