What part of the headline is inaccurate or biased submitter? Sorry if the facts disagree with our fearless leader's point of view, they're still the facts.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush will cast the first veto of his presidency on Wednesday to stop legislation to expand embryonic stem cell research, the White House said.

This legislation is often quoted in the press as being championed by top scientists who support the initiative - and claim to be desired by 'most Americans,' depending of what polls you read, and how you phrase the question posed to them, Reuters said.

So, if the media doesn't exactly quote the White House then they are Liberal ?

Good reporting is the ability to put a press release in to your own words.

People who search for proof of a liberal media bias need look no further than Bill Clintons term in office. If there wasnt a liberal bias, I would remember what the name of that chick he got head from was. I cant remember at all.

the_gospel_of_thomas,

That was a pretty bad rewrite you did, dude. Especially of an article that didn't need rewriting. Yours came across like a psycho right wing blog.

"If you trust these 'so called' scientists, the black helicopters aren't WAITING for a RACEWAR. Don't trust JEW 'media'!"

Cowboy Spencer: I cant remember at all.

And that fellow that led the investigation. Ken Lay? Ringo Starr? If they weren't so liberal, they would have followed him every second of his day, from his driveway in the morning back at night. Damn LIEbrals.

Apparently TGOT doesn't think that that is the case...Not sure where he's getting the numbers but that never stoped him before

I'm reminded of that old joke with the guy on the roof of his house when his town flooded. A canoe passes by, and stops to help, but he refuses, claiming "God will save me!". A powerboat comes by and offers help, but he refuses, claiming "God will save me!". A helicopter comes by and he again refuses aid, shrieking "God will save me!". After a few more hours he drowns, and suddenly has an audience with God. He asks "Why didn't you save me?". God answers "I sent a canoe, a powerboat and a helicopter. What more do you want?"

Ummm .... I think that they were forced to report on the story, AFTER Drudge was the first person to make it public, Cowboy Spencer.

. Monica Lewinsky, a former White House intern, files a sworn affidavit in federal court denying she had a sexual relationship with the president. She allegedly asks her friend Linda Tripp to lie as well. (7 Jan)
. Linda Tripp wears a hidden microphone for the FBI and records conversations with Ms Lewinsky. (13 Jan)
. Prosecutors ask Ms Lewinsky to co-operate in their investigation. She refuses.(16 Jan)
. The Lewinsky scandal spreads across the Internet after maverick reporter Matt Drudge reports that a Newsweek article detailing an alleged affair had been spiked.(18 Jan

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/events/clinton_under_fire/timeline/168540.stm

"Newsweek Kills Story on White House Intern: 23-Year-Old, Sex Relationship with President" screamed a Saturday-night headline on the infamous Internet tip sheet, the Drudge Report. "The Drudge Report has learned that reporter Michael Isikoff developed the story of his career, only to have it spiked by top Newsweek suits hours before publication," the report said.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/special_report/1998/clinton_scandal/50031.stm

.... yup.

Newsweek had the story, but didn't report it. Sucks to be wrong.

the_gospel_of_thomas: WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush will cast the first veto of his presidency on Wednesday to stop legislation championed by top scientists and desired by most Americans to expand embryonic stem cell research, the White House said.

Let's recast that there sentence with somewhat betterer grammar:

"Today the White House said President George W. Bush will cast the first veto of his presidency to stop legislation championed by top scientists and desired by most Americans to expand embryonic stem cell research."

You can stick "the White House said" in a dangling phrase like that if you want, but it doesn't change the meaning of the sentence: The sentence says this is what the White House said.

2006-07-19 4:49:21 PM
By the way, this is about federally-funded research. You want this researched? Then Paypal the scientists a thousand dollars to get the ball rolling. Hey - if your a woman, you can always donate tissue for the cause.

Bush hasn't outlawed this. He just decided to not to support federal funding. Whoop-tee-dooo.

Almost forgot: At least Reuters isn't saying Bush is actually banning stem-cell research, the way too many other news agencies are.

What sort of person with an IQ over a carrot would object to stem-cell research?

Oh wait, I forgot.

Republicans.

I'd like to take the opportunity to apologize to future generations of Americans for what is going on in our country right now. There are a lot of us who are completely aware of how stupid some of our countrymen are, and we feel very ashamed when the schmuck of a president we have in office feels the need to swing his impotent unit around in the name of a mythical carpenter/superhero.

Just out of curiosity: what is your personal stance on stem cell research from a moral point of view, regardless of how it's funded?

Huh? How about it?

2006-07-19 4:56:17 PM
Actually, I'm sort of happy about this in a back-handed way.

Bush is driving away moderate Republicans in droves by this action, which is good news for everyone else.

2006-07-19 4:57:28 PM
I doubt that a majority of Americans understand the issue.

2006-07-19 4:57:40 PM
felixstrange "what is your personal stance on stem cell research from a moral point of view, regardless of how it's funded?"

If a human being ( or an unborn fetus, or tissue ) is harvested for this process, I don't like it. Same with abortion, it's not against the law, and I don't have any say in what other people do.

But just like when the federal governemnt kills people who are convicted of murder, the people who are against this can speak out, and they can be upset when the federal government spends their money in a way that they don't like. Same with me.

Don't worry, when there is a democrat elected in 08, i'm sure the first thing they'll do before the chair in the oval office is warm, is sign some executive order to start cranking up the stem cell research, and then begin harvesting away.

Good times.

Did you actually read the articles in question? Some talk about how he vetoed the bill that lifts the ban on Federally funded research. Others talk about other countries ban on the research (such as Australia). Still others talk about a "near-ban," which I will grant you is misleading and somewhat dishonest.

Hahahaha! You should follow your own link! I recognized one of those, and it's in AUSTRALIA! And the even greater Irony is that they're not saying that at all, but I guess you can't read a sentence completely through.

mediaho,

There was actually a pretty cool story on Daily Kos today (anecdotal though it might have been) about a hardline Republican truck driver who recently saw the light. It had this gem in it:

"People don't know. They just don't know the truth. I thought Bush was a good guy. I didn't know he'd be this much of a disaster. People think the stem cells are coming from babies. They just think you want to have babies just to kill them for cells."

I see your point regarding the question of where life begins. Unfortunately that question can currently only be decided on faith rather than by science. So in the meantime, people will have to agree to disagree.

If a human being ( or an unborn fetus, or tissue ) is harvested for this process, I don't like it.

But even if that's true, why is it better that they be discarded. If they are going to be thrown out anyway, why not use them for something which could be beneficial?

It seems to me that in order to be against using leftover ebmbryos for stem cell research, you would also have to be against the process of in-vitro fertilization as well.

the_gospel_of_thomas

Why would I "attack" the president? He's got a right to veto the bill if he wants...it's short-sighted and misguided, and most likely a pandering effort, in my opinion, but he's not doing anything he can't do by law...

Besides, that was a compliment...you've got a promising career in the fast-paced world of conservative rent-boy journalism. ; )

I doubt I ever will.

I don't like it. I'm not going to do anything about it. I fully expect the next president, a democrat, will sign an executive order to make fetus stem cell research mandatory at all colleges and universities and fund it to the fullest extent that congress will allow, or 1/2 the military budget, whichever comes first.

2006-07-19 5:31:21 PM
felixstrange: that question can currently only be decided on faith rather than by science. So in the meantime, people will have to agree to disagree

Hmmm. Some folks resist capital punishment, even though everyone dies eventually, because there's always the tiniest chance the guy on Death Row is innocent.

So if, as you stipulate, we don't really know when life begins--and there are plenty of viable stem cells available from noncontroversial sources like cord blood or adults--why not err on the side of caution in this question as well?

Um--your point being what? That an Australian wire service isn't really a wire service?
