Fry 'em all, at least bob and friggin' tom have the decency to be amusing.

h2so4hurts: Q101 was good in the lat 90's. Its now terrible. Like every other Chicago radio station. They try to have a broad appeal and end up satisfying no one. How can anyone like "shuffle?" The only station that actually played good music in Chicago was 94.7, but that got replaced. Now your choices are hip hop, rap, or Q101's soft indie shuffle garbage.

Ugh. They played nothing but rap-rock crap and Creed back in those days to the ignorance of all other rock that was going on. The station was horrible.

Chew on this: alternative rock was originally used to describe stuff like R.E.M. back in the late 80's -- it was the other, more palatable name for what people also called "college radio rock". Q101's choice of mixing the original "alternative", as well as early/mid 90's grunge and alt, and a variety of new stuff is far more "alternative" than the cock rock/"Nu Metal" that most so-called alternative stations play now.

Q101 was welcomed back to my radio with the shuffle concept after being banished in the late 90's in favor of college stations and the occasional check of WXRT. At least Q101 sticks with a theme for their shuffle; Nine FM and JACK will jump from Captain & Tennille to Nirvana to Prince to Duran Duran in consecutive songs.

Mancow was funny when he was only in Chicago as a local morning show. Once he was trying for the syndication deal and trying to appeal beyond the city, he became a ranting angryman that became boring and not very funny. His best stuff tended to be local stunts and local jokes, so when he couldn't be doing stuff like Cicero de Mayo and making fun of Joliet or Alsip, he went downhill fast. Good riddance.

Man, I've been waiting to properly use that cliche ever since I first read it!
2006-07-11 03:25:28 PM
***I really can't listen to radio at all anymore. Opie and Anthony, Mancow or the new local guy Barski are horrid. It's actually gotten worse from the Morning Zoos of the 1980s. I've thought of sending in some of my tapes from the 8os and turning the industry around. I can dream it, can't I?***

Yeah, you do that! HAHAHAHAAAAA!!!!
Another radio never-been who thinks he's got what it takes but never did dick.

I will be my paycheck that Mancow's next show is in Mantown.

"Seriously, what's with this nutsack business?"

Drew was on Mancow once and the interview ended because he tried saying "nutsack" which isn't very terrestrial-friendly. It was the second bleep for the interview, so Mancow cut him loose.
2006-07-11 03:27:57 PM

Sirius and XM better look to get into cell phones, because people aren't always in their car or near their stereo. But they are certainly near their cellphone almost all the time

I don't know about south of the border, but XM Canada just signed on with Telus Mobility to stream over cellphones. Well, certain models of phone at least. The stupid thing is that Telus charges more per month for the streaming service than XM themselves do for a regular subscription -- then again, they're a cellphone company and all they know how to do is massively overcharge for things.
2006-07-11 03:31:57 PM
zombiebot: Seriously, what's with this nutsack business?

Drew was doing a phone-in on Mancoont's show and was begining to tell about a headline about some dudes nutsack. but Drew got his audio dumped on air and was cut off.

original thread goodness
2006-07-11 03:34:33 PM
Ruffian: which isn't very terrestrial-friendly.

it's not even that. Drew has been able to say 'nutsack' on other stations. that incident was just Mancock trying to be edgy

The Mikey Show out of San Diego is a great alternative. It's simply the most entertaining radio show i've ever listened to, and it does so without being a shock jock show. I'm a regular 23 year old guy and I'm a full time listener for the entire duration of the show each day. The show's on the west coast, but I live in DC so i listen online via webstream. The show starts at 9 am my time and goes til 1, so my mornings go by super fast. Give em a listen, I can bet you'll enjoy it too.
2006-07-11 03:40:39 PM
Y'know, this is sorta the equivalent of Condi Rice stepping into a Fark thread about North Korea, but I'm guessing no one really cares too much, so I won't take it personally.
2006-07-11 03:47:31 PM

What the hell do you know about changing careers suddenly and breaking into radio? I bet NOTHING.

Go back to riding your Jetski you bought on credit.
2006-07-11 03:51:26 PM
Ummm... What's wrong with buying stuff on credit?

/I've got a sweet T.V. that I only pay $40/week for the next 8 years.
2006-07-11 03:51:29 PM
aquigley: this is sorta the equivalent of Condi Rice stepping into a Fark thread about North Korea,

I think it's closer to Condi Rice's dog walker stepping into a thread about North Korea. No one really notices until the end...and even then you're still regarded as the tard that follows the shiat making machine. good work if you can get it tho, i hear.
2006-07-11 03:52:11 PM
Chicago radio sucks. Johnny B. is gone, Steve and Gary broken up and Kevin Matthews left for his old hometown.

At least you still have Steve Dahl.

/Did I hear Jonathon Brandemier is back?
2006-07-11 03:52:36 PM
Great... now the O&A Army can march to Chicago!

[image from too old to be available]

/if he can afford bus fare, which I doubt
//to be fair, Mancow sucked almost as much as O&A
///still looking forward to Stern skull-farking his dad's corpse

Raw Toast
XRT rules, its the only music station in the city I'll listen to.

Meh, they're alright. I mean they're prolly the best radio station left in Chicago, but there are times when they play absolute garbage. Please please please play more Sarah McLaughlin. (rolls eyes) Honestly, its the radio station I listen to at work.

I used to listen to Mancow during the Rock 103.5 days, but I agree that the move to Q101 and subsequent syndication killed the show. Plus the ranting about Clinton and black helicopters (and the blue UN money in secret gov't warehouses, etc. etc. blah blah blah) made me wonder if he was off his meds. I turned off Q101 permanently when their playlist consisted of such diverse bands as Limp Bizkit, and Limp BizKorn, and Linkin Bizkit.

/Murph in the mornings?!? Wow, and I remember those days...
//was in the arbitron ratings a few months ago
///last slashie, promise- Q101's grave was dug when their "Top 9 at 9" segment consisted of only LB's "Nookie" (which was the same day the same crap-ass CD came out)
2006-07-11 04:02:46 PM
Yeah, he can say that on stations nobody gives a rat's fart about. Read up a little on David Smith's filings with the FCC about Mancow. See how much he's been fined for stuff that is probably less offensive than "nutsack." Then you might understand why Mancow dumped Drew. Especially when he asked Drew once in the interview to watch language.
2006-07-11 04:03:51 PM

That's one of the most annoying members of O&A Fandom. He does not represent the whole.

Oh, it's great work. All the Milk Bones I can eat.

Nope, he's back, and getting better ratings than a lot of people expected.

Yea. Tampa, Orlando. Same thing.

Or, perhaps, how out of touch you are.

I've gotten tired of regular old radio for the most part. I will listen to the Score in chicago to get my sports info and White Sox games, maybe to WBBM newsradio for traffic or a news hit. But then I plug in my mp3 player, now my ipod, and listen to whatever music or old radio bits I want to without annoying people or commercials.

A few years back, one of the local chicago suburban stations I used to listen to, had a dj talking about the upcoming, I'm spelling this as he pronounced it, "Chuper Cheby Chow" ( Super Chevy Show ). I was surprised that he wasn't fired immediately just for being an idiot.

That same station was also broadcasting from a local supermarket parking lot, where they were holding a carnival. My wife and I couldn't believe how many times the dj said to come on out because, "it's clean, it's safe, it's fun!" Personally I prefer a dirty, unsafe, terrible time, like the usual travelling carnival.
2006-07-11 04:32:56 PM
Wait, how does TwoBit know about Mancow? you in the midwest?
2006-07-11 04:59:18 PM
WXRT....Chicago's Finest Rock. Some of the best pipes in the biz worked there...wish they had online access..

Left there in '90 but would still miss working as a kid in a warehouse and listening to Brandmier, Kevin Matthews and Steve& Garry.

Best era of radio ever! (In my lifetime anyways)

i walk by his studio in the merchandise mart everyday. dude is going bald very quickly. he tries to cover it up though. he is a jackass tool.

also h2so4hurts 94.7 was the only good station in chicago? dude all they played was godsmack, smatterings of metallica, and disturbed on a constant loop. if that is good, then kill yourself.
2006-07-11 05:13:59 PM
Russ Martin here in DFW on Live 105.3 is the funniest Jock around.
2006-07-11 05:26:17 PM
Mancow is the most annoying thing I have -ever- heard on the radio.

I'm guessing you never had a chance to listen to one of David Lee Roth's stellar radio performances.
2006-07-11 05:39:26 PM
I think I am one the only people (on fark)that listens to Mancow on a regular basis and thinks that his show is the only thing worth listening to on the radio. I turn off the radio after he's off the air. Q101 is a alright station, but getting rid of Mancow will make me stop listening completly, now that they have that shuffle thing, you always hear the same groups (ex. Bob Marley or Depeche Mode at least once an hour). How can you stand that?
2006-07-11 05:39:36 PM
That's lame, I like Mancow's political rants, though not as common as I would like. He usually comes up with a really good point that escapes most people
2006-07-11 05:51:25 PM
NURVGAS - XRT does have an online stream now.
2006-07-11 05:55:09 PM
I don't know if anyone has mentioned this or not, but for those who can get both Q101 and Rock 102.1 out of milwaukee, something fishy is going on. Rock has their web site down, and has made mention of some great changes being announced at 5pm today (so, yeah, 7 minutes from now...sorry). Perhaps conspiracy theoristical, perhaps not, but maybe he's heading north of the border. . .

Listened to Mancow on 103.5 all during high school, then matured when i got to college. Now i barely listen to radio b/c it tends to suck hard. I mean, on Q101 - the last letter game? why??
2006-07-11 05:55:47 PM
When I moved from Chicago to Phoenix in 2000, I lamented the fact that I wouldn't be able to hear Mancow any longer, having been a longtime fan.

It pains me to hear that he's basically gone to crap since I left.

I wonder if I accidentally took all his talent with me when I moved. I'll have to check my junk drawer.

CrackedEgg: The O&A Virus - spreading across America! Catch it!

The cure for that virus is a healthy dose of Stern..

Okay, my bad...102.1 went independant. whee! Mancow still sux ass.

Sorry if I'm not hoity-toity sophisticated enough to want to listen to people who have even less talent than O'Reilly.
2006-07-11 06:22:22 PM
i hate mancow as much as the next man... the only thing i have to say in relation to this is... 'stern didnt invent every radio bit, gag, conversation, term, blah blah blah'

he's good at what he does, he obviously has a few thousand folks drooling off the chin for his show(stern) but he isnt the architect of every radio bit

/long live don and mike
//knowing adding that, will be flamed for criticizing stern and listening to dnm
2006-07-11 06:25:56 PM
also really like how he tried to do the star jones thing and q101 didnt blink and did the barbara walters thing...

talk aboot shopping yourself around and we'll tell the truth... and then can your ass earlier than expected...

where's the nelson muntz picture for mancow.. or even better yet, a not yours
i do have to admit though the only thing i have laughed at by mancow was a recent commercial spoof on sam adams:
I'll have a sam adams
"but its 930 in the morning"
yeah, i have to have something to get the taste of weed and hooker spit out of my mouth
"i'll have a sam adams too"
2006-07-11 06:37:52 PM
"Welcome back to my presets, Q101." Yes, I agree. One week after Q101 took Mancow in I stopped listening (a little sadly) and have only heard the station when younger workers had their radios set to it and then I ignored it easily. Mancow spewed misogyny and the nastiest of right wing garbage during the Clinton administration. Plus, he had a sidekick whose nickname was slang for shiat. Says it all to me. I hope he never works as a radio show host ever again. He can go into his first love of preaching and stay there.
2006-07-11 06:43:27 PM

The cure for that virus is a healthy dose of Stern..

Again, do not turn this into a Stern vs. O&A tinklefest.

For the most part, many O&A and Stern fans are loyal to their shows, and no matter what you can say in a forum, they absolutely will not change allegiances.

Some people are fans of both shows.

Some people will sample the other show on their own, and figure out what they like on their own.

But forum wars will NEVER get people to convert from one show to another.
