Thousands of miles into the sky, a group of satellites hover above the Gulf of Mexico. If you were on the Space Shuttle and saw them, you'd think that they were just another group of satellites doing whatever in space.

But these are no ordinary satellites.

No; they are prized and valuable pieces of equipment for millions of Americans. The continued normality of their lives often depends on the proper operation of them. They depend on these satellites for their delivery of Fox News Channel, A&E, Discovery Channel, and, for some, PaxTV (or "i", or whatever it's called these days).

In one backyard, this small swath of opening from the trees provides all the space needed to comfortably allow the signals to reach a small instrument that picks up these signals, and relays them into the corresponding house.

We live right in the heart of a city with a metropolitan area population of around 1.5 million, and yet we still have wild nocturnal visitors like this one. One night we were having dinner with some friends at our patio table, and I snapped this pic from the table when this large raccoon sauntered right by us as if we weren't even there:

Snug Tight: My wife was watering the grass. I stood so the water droplets were backlit and played with exposure times.
Nice job! What a great outcome.

veruca: endless possibilities there.

I'm going to assume that you're referring to the city shot. I had a bunch of better shots that I lost when my old laptop kicked from a very heavy nighttime snowstorm, but it's definately a great place to play around with light levels and exposure times.

We don't get snow all that often in southern MD so when we do we make sure to take the dogs out back and let them run around (or run around as well as they can while still leashed).

Had to lighten up the pic pretty good to get the detail of Kurt to show up and that kinda washed out any detail of snow... looks like the pic was taken on Venus.

But I digress.

Judging by the large and (approximately) kidney-shaped glands on the back of that toad, I'd say you've got yourself a mighty fine lickin' toad there.

Thanks Ravengirl; None of us ever did bark at the bird, because we were so dumbstruck. And the Roadrunner didn't ever say "beep-beep", but it did make a clicking sound. It didn't really fly to the fence, but sort of hopped up onto it, but then it did definitely run down the street!
