I'll sum up the problem with deregulation: Businesses will either cater to the rich or overcharge the poor.

1. Design test
2. Tailor curriculum to help children to pass test
3. Pat self on back when children pass test

better job at screwing the poor or at catering to the rich? This administration sets a pretty high standard for both...

I want them to have the choice.

Sloth_DC: You want your kids to be able to choose their own schools? Or you want the right to be able to choose a terrible education for your own children? I'm not following you.

I want them to be able to choose their own schools, especially if the local govt school is failing to do its job.

Sloth_DC: Call me crazy, but I don't think letting children choose which school they attend is a very good idea.

Okay, you're crazy.

Interesting that we want to give kids condoms in school and insist they're smart enough to know if/how/when to have sex, but we contend they aren't smart/mature enough to make intelligent choices about education.

OK...we do that...

and insist they're smart enough to know if/how/when to have sex

Who the fark says that?!? I don't, and I haven't heard anyone else doing so either. Kids are dumb, but they will fark even if they're dumb, so it's better to mitigate the risk of the activities that they'll engage in either way.

but we contend they aren't smart/mature enough to make intelligent choices about education.

I wouldn't entirely be opposed to something that allowed a 16-18 year old *some* amount of choice in the direction of their education. But I didn't say 16-18 year olds, and neither did Sloth_DC. The idea of letting a 9 year old pick their school speaks for itself, methinks.

I clearly meant that the *parents* should have some choice in the education received by their child, not that the child himself would choose. I let your comment go because I thought you were being deliberately obtuse, but you really *are* that obtuse, aren't you?

You confused both myself and a guy who apparently wishes to support you, so I question how "clear" that was.

Let me ask you this: wouldn't it be preferrable to sink the time, money, and effort into fixing the schools we have, rather than turning education into yet another commodity for the wealthy to monopolize and the poor to lack?

1) I never said we shouldn't spend more time, money, and effort on the public schools.
2) The communist lingo is tired, let it go. Giving vouchers to poor families so they can attend private school when their public school is failing is hardly turning education into a commodity for the wealthy, comrade.

What "communist lingo", specifically?

Giving vouchers to poor families so they can attend private school when their public school is failing is hardly turning education into a commodity for the wealthy, comrade.

The robber barons of the railroad industry didn't suddenly appear out of thin air the moment someone laid a track down, either. These things take time.

Ah, Southwest airlines. Catering to the rich and overcharging the poor for many years now.

WTF?

It seems the current situation caters to the rich and overcharges the poor.

The rich can afford the private schools. In many cases, schools are so bad that any taxes the poor are paying is an overpayment.

Sloth_DC: There's no "communist lingo" there. Try again.

When I start talking about the proletariat or something, then you can make that comment.
