One of my cheap thrills (and I'll readily admit, all my thrills are cheap) is puttering around the back roads to see what old cars are rotting away in people's driveways. It might not always be trash but it's as close as I'm going to get for this contest.

This one wasn't rotting away in the driveway but it's already been fairly well trashed, and it made a pretty ominous sight looming in my fine yellow Tiburon's rearview mirrors.

Remenants of a fire in the apartment directly above where I used to live. The inside of our place was pretty much "trashed" as well from the major water damage, but I was too depressed to take photos, as I didn't have insurance. One of life's lessons.

I apologize in advance for the poor photo quality. It was a crappy panasonic digital camera. One of those 1600x1280 max res pocket ones.

Anyway, I snapped this picture on the way over to a friends house, and because of this dumpster, she and I are now dating. What can I say. Someone's trash helped me find a treasure.

I have a nice Yaesu FT-101 that I'll use on HF once I upgrade but then again I also have a nice little IC-706mkiig that I could use on HF.

A peat contraption. It was specially designed and custom built at great expensde to scrape a thin layer of peat from the top of the bog. It promptly sank into the bog. A single large diesel powers a hydraulic pump which powers at least a dozen hydraulic motors.

Abandoned home near Sili village, Olosega Island, American
Samoa - January 3, 2005

Except for one resilient family, this village was abandoned in the early 1990s after a series
of cyclones. Since this photo was taken the house has collapsed further
and continued to be reclaimed by the sea and jungle. When I hiked to the area last month
the wall you see here was completely down and the vines were so thick I couldn't set foot
where this shot was taken.

Old bucket, Dana, Massachusetts. October 31, 2004.

(The story behind this is that Dana doesn't exist anymore. The town itself itself was thrown away in the creation of the Quabbin Reservoir. Now it's part of the town of Petersham, but you can still find where the town was by going onto the reservoir lands. Coincidentally, there were three other towns wiped out by the reservoir; only Dana and Prescott are above the water now, and you can only visit Dana.)
