"ABC News wants to hear from you. We're currently producing a report on the increasing changes in our physical environment, and are looking for interesting examples of people coping with the differences in their daily lives. Has your life been directly affected by global warming?"

And all the people who write in to say that their lives have not changed in one, small, minute, little microscopic way ... will be promptly deleted.

However, for their next trick, ABC will send volunteers who are dark skinned Aye-Rabs wearing trendy Kabul fashion dress to a NASCAR race wearing hidden cameras, expecting to record the inevitable hate crimes that will occur from the red-necks.

... oh wait.

/Must be really fun being a journalist these days.

what we need is less anecdotal and wishful thinking and guiltmongering more science on both sides of the issue. but that's boring

Everytime I get around my father-in-law I have to listen to his rants about how not only is there NOT global warming, there is in fact global cooling. His evidence? The beach he regularly fishes on the Texas coast is getting bigger.

Oh yeah, he gets all of his other news from Rush, Hannity and Bill O'Reilly.

A few years ago a camera from a network affiliate (I forget which one) wanted to show how airport security has not improved since 9/11. So they hired an Arab-looking guy, gave him fake ID and had him hire a plane to transport some big locked crates about which he acted nervous.

Their ringer hired the plane with no problems. So they went back out with the crates in a van with a camera crew to do their big Gotcha, and were all arrested by the FBI, who had been waiting for the suspicious Arab guy to show back after the hanger owner tipped them off.

Wish I could find a link to that.

'Scuse me--I meant a camera CREW--not just a camera.

The camera is out looking for Sarah Connor, I think.

Here's what amuses me about this story: Last year Al Gore did a big 'ol speech about global warming in New York--and the temp was down in the single digits.

Naturally a bunch of wags pounced on that, in response to which a lot of folks pointed out that a single cold day doesn't invalidate global warming as a theory because it's irrelevant anecdotal evidence.

But now a whole network is asking for anecdotal evidence to SUPPORT global warming. Who wants to bet the same people WON'T be protesting about meaningless anecdotal evidence?

The Crane Meister

A couple of weeks after 9/11 a local Omaha station put a hidden camera into some Sikh's turban and sent him to The Crossroads mall to show (1) how prejudiced Nebraskans were against Middle Easterners, and (2) how dumb Nebraskans were becuase they wouldn't know a Sikh is not an Arab.

The footage? A blonde suburban woman with a kid in a stroller held the door open for the guy. He bought a slice of pizza. Nobody said anything to him until he went into a Husker memorabilia store and the clerk said quietly, "Can I tell you something? I hope people are being nice to you and not discriminating. That would be awful."

Gotcha!

Whereas here in Arizona after 9/11, a blond redneck shot and killed the first Sikh he saw insisting he was a hero for doing it. The courts refused an insanity defense.

Darn. GIS failed me.

I was looking for an image of Homer Simpson wearing the "Hidden camera" in his oversized cowboy hat, walking into the Quikie Mart to confront Apu while the newsvan was waiting in the parkinglot.

Hear, hear.

You realize, of course, that both of us are idiots for even wishing for such a situation, but I reckon it's okay to dream.

Yep, forget true science. If Podunk Pete says it's warmin' up in these parts, why global warming must be real OH NOOOEEESSS!! That's what goes for fact in MSM.

/Global warming = sham. Twenty years ago it was an oncoming ice age.

HAHAAA! The last coupld Fark threads on global warming (aka Gore's movie) convinced me that the true dumbasses are the ones who keep submitting global warming concern links with the DUMBASS tag. And they aren't about to change their "minds". Enjoy the flamewar.

"See? Global warming is real because Edna Froodman of Toadsuck Arkansas had her prize hog lose at the county fair this year"

And Eskimo Jim has no more polar bears to hunt because they drowned.

Why even ask for anectdotal evidence when we already have tons of hard scientific evidence?

2006-06-20 7:32:02 PM
The CraneMeister

I'll be the first to say that Anecdotal evidence of global warming won't prove anything, either.

It will be useful, however, to annoy and taunt people who DO think Anecdotal evidence can prove things, like, say, the people who mentioed "OH, BUT IT'S COLD, SO THERE CAN BE NO SUCH THING AS GLOBAL WARMING!".

2006-06-20 7:32:10 PM
Last year was one of the wettest winters on record. They said the fire season would be treacherous. This year was one of the dryest winters on record. They say the fire season will be treacherous.

Yup...more science is what we need. More science, and more science, until we find something somewhere that says it's ok for us to continue burning all the fossil fuels we want without any consequence. Yup. More science. Because the millions of pages of science we have right now that say global warming is real just won't do.

All you need to do is come up here to alaska and check out where the local glaciers are today compared to 10, 20, 30 years ago. Take a drive up to Fairbanks and go explore our new sinkholes where the permafrost is melting.

When I was in Dutch Harbor this spring, we had a record string of eight sunny 60 degree days. To put this in perspective: The sun was so intense that everyone on the island had wicked sunburns because you can't buy sunblock in Dutch Harbor. Neither of the two stores carry it because normally it is ALWAYS overcast and 45-50. The sun even burned the flowers because they're not used to it either!

The climate changes (whether human induced or not) are much more apparent and dramatic in nearctic and arctic regions. Up here the changes are astonishing even in my 28-year-old observation.

2006-06-20 7:33:39 PM
Scientists are greatly mixed on that there "scientific evidence." Seems the ones in the real know doubt it.

On the other hand, glad you thawed out from the last media induced global hysteria to be in this one.

It's not a matter of if the average surface temperature of Earth is getting hotter (it is), it's a matter of if this is seriously going to mess stuff up (to be determined).

2006-06-20 7:35:35 PM
So after reading this thread I checked the weather in my city by typing it in the Weather Channel Firefox search engine thingie.

It displayed the current temp, but right above it they displayed a link that reminded me to "Carry an Extra Towel" WTF?

2006-06-20 7:36:22 PM
Why even ask for anectdotal evidence when we already have tons of hard scientific evidence?

Because, dontcha know, all opinions are entirely EQUAL! Just because one person has a doctorate in climate science and someone else is a professional layabout doesn't mean that their opinions shouldn't be treated equally!

And besides, 'Global Warming' is a misleading name. The Globe as a whole will get warmer, but some areas will, in fact, get COLDER, due to climate changes. For instance, if global warming caused ocean currents to shift (And, say, moved the gulf stream farther north), some areas would get warmer, others colder.

2006-06-20 7:38:16 PM
Global warming is all my fault and I take full responsibility.

On December 21st of last year, there were 10 hours and 8 minutes of sunlight outside my house; temperatures were 40-50 on the average. Yesterday there was 13 hours and 50 minutes of sunlight, and temperatures were about 95 degrees.

At this rate, the sun will not go down again after 21 months or so, and by that time it will likely be 190-220 degrees out there; the oceans will all boil away, and we will all die.

The reason for this is the roosters: They start crowing earlier and earlier every day, and as soon as they do, the sun starts rising sooner and sooner.

I alone know this, because I am enlightened by God almighty.

To prevent the end of the world, you must pay me $1 billion in gold, and provide me with 500 nubile Farkettes to assist in my temple rituals; otherwise, you will not have to wait to die and burn in hell; you will burn on earth right now, and it will be a horrible death.

You better get moving, you don't have very much time--and I'm not joking. The end of the world is near, and I alone can save you.

Felgraf: It will be useful, however, to annoy and taunt people who DO think Anecdotal evidence can prove things, like, say, the people who mentioed "OH, BUT IT'S COLD, SO THERE CAN BE NO SUCH THING AS GLOBAL WARMING!".

hadn't really considered that aspect.

it could be said that one doesn't get reasoned out of a position that they didn't reason themselves into, but this does seem kinda intentionally dumb. maybe that's it's genius. or something.

does no one care about acid rain anymore?

2006-06-20 7:40:19 PM
They aren't asking for the anecdotal evidence to prove anything. They're simply asking people if they've noticed a climatic change to tell them about it. If it hasn't, don't submit anything. Jeez, what's the big deal?

unusual animals. well, the old lady reported seeing naked people everywhere....does that count?

//ok, ok, I will put my clothes back on, but only cause you asked so nice

Do what you want. When rapid cooling begins, as a natural response to the hyper warming cycle, please don't be expecting handouts. Canadians have made alliances with fellow Arctic countries, including Russia, Norway, Finland, and others. All igloo, dogsled, parka, and fur hat exports will be subject to high export tariffs. For years we have all endured jokes at our ability to adapt in cold climates, now the last laugh will be ours!

/If you don't believe in global warming, believe in the jet stream breaking down due to a reduction of Arctic ice/Better yet consider yourself proactive and figure out how we can avoid a modern ice age/
