"In the 750-word unedited version of McComb's speech, she made two references to the lord, nine mentions of God and one mention of Christ."

Good for the school district in cutting her off.

Heh. It's not like you need a microphone to summon the Devil.

There's a place for religion in America.

It's called church.

Oh, good headline, submitter! Better than mine, and submitted quicker... this should go green.

I'll be shocked if my headline does.

Geez, seems like every day I have to come in a remind peopel that they don't have rights when it comes to being in school. Especially public ones.

I refer to public schools as prisons for a reason.

"I went through four years of school at Foothill and they taught me logic and they taught me freedom of speech," McComb said. "God's the biggest part of my life. Just like other valedictorians thank their parents, I wanted to thank my lord and savior."

Yeah, I'm sure God was the one who instilled a good upbringing and drove you to succeed. Isn't it great how parents can just leave their babies in the wilderness and God will raise them right?

Also freedom of speech does not mean that you get to ruin everyone else's graduation with an advertisement for your cult.

We really need to grow up over this crap. Would it kill people to let some one take 10 seconds to thank god? If you disagree w/ their view, so what? You shake it off & move on like an adult. If the mere mention of religion gets your panties in that much of a wad you've got some deeper issues to address.

I bet she takes it in the ass so that she can have fun but still be "pure" for her wedding night.

It isnt really a big deal, and there are certainly far larger problems in the world, but the simple fact of the matter is they should keep their unsubstantiated views out of the public school system. Im sure youd be much less tolerant if I trew out some racial slur or denounced Christianity, but the first amendment would protect that just as much.

If it was just that, then yeah, no problem. But "two references to the Lord, nine mentions of God, and one mention of Christ" is a bit much.

What if an atheist was making the speech and said "There is no god" nine times?

I'd assume he wasn't paying attention in English class when speechwriting was covered. Repetition has its uses, but so does a sledgehammer. Misapplication of either usually ends badly.

TheOnion - Im sure youd be much less tolerant if I trew out some racial slur or denounced Christianity, but the first amendment would protect that just as much.

I look at it like this; you should be allowed to say these things but you should also expect a certain amount of backlash or at least a dose of the silent treatment when stating things that are contrary to the popular belief. Some people take their religion, politics, whatever a little too seriously. If that's the case they should be thick skinned enough to take the ridicule as well. Granted, I'd be pretty disappointed going to a grad ceremony & receiving a sermon. Yes, I agree sermons belong in church. But I'd feel exactly the same way if she got up there & started preaching about the war, the environment, poverty or any other secular beliefs she might hold. That kind of lecture also has its place. Like a rally. But at the end of the day I would have likely forgotten about it or found something else to occupy my time. No harm, no foul.

Yes, because it's a tacit acknowledgement and endorsement by the school of that religion. Will the next time a validictorian who wants to thank the Flying Spaghetti Monster get to go uncensored then? Yeah FSMs really add a touch of CLASS to graduations.

Farking Phillisitine, I have a definite problem with it.

Check out the picture to the left. That is one fine looking Valedictorian.

/I'd slip her my diploma...

I mean, if God didn't want me to rail you silly, he wouldn't have given you a 'gina.

That's why, for what she said was the first time in her life, the valedictorian who graduated with a 4.7 GPA rebelled against authority.

I'm going to need a judges' ruling on this... 4.7 GPA?

2006-06-19 6:40:51 PM
Well, I'm all for free speech, BUT, I had to stop reading the article because my "Jeebus Freak-o-meter" was hitting redline.

/None the less, not cool cutting her off.

2006-06-19 6:41:16 PM
When are folks going to wise up to the fact that the 1st Amendment guarantee of freedom of speech does not extend to the classroom or by extension, the graduation ceremony.

The girl keeps harping on her rights but she doesn't have them.

If she wants to thank her lord and savior, let her do it from a street corner or a pulpit like everyone else.

Keep YOUR GOD out of the PUBLIC SCHOOLS. Praise his name everywhere else you want.

BobtheFascist: Would it kill people to let some one take 10 seconds to thank god?

No. But "two references to the lord, nine mentions of God and one mention of Christ" is a bit much, don't you think? Besides, the school's policy was clear well before she gave the speech. And she was told specifically not to break the policy.

Meh.

2006-06-19 6:42:21 PM
wrong of her to do this
wrong of them to censor her

im torn between my anti-religion liberal views, and my everyone has a right to say what they want liberal views.

Life's true lessons began when they clipped her mic.

I'd hit it...

2006-06-19 6:43:49 PM
This is a positive step. However, it’s just the beginning. This needs to be applied to other thought crimes. Those who speak out against the State are by definition in league with those whom would seek to destroy us and must be silenced.

but she can knock on my door with pamphlets anytime

Bob N Freely: Lots of AP classes.

And as for cutting off the mike? Fine. Thats why the flying spaghetty monster gave me a voice that could shatter concrete walls.

YA HEAR THAT IN THE BACK?!?

In the 750-word unedited version of McComb's speech, she made two references to the lord, nine mentions of God and one mention of Christ.
In the version approved by school officials, six of those words were omitted along with two biblical references. Also deleted from her speech was a reference to God's love being so great that he gave his only son to suffer an excruciated death in order to cover everyone's shortcomings and forge a path to heaven.
...
McComb, who will study journalism at Biola University, a private Christian school in La Mirada, Calif., doesn't believe she was preaching.

I would love to see what she thinks is preaching...

2006-06-19 6:44:29 PM
She's one of those self-assured, self-righteous fundie twats.

I'm all for free speech, but when it comes to preaching the philosophy of a boogeyman to those who are essentially coerced into being there, it treads the fine line between stupid and clever. I'm going to go with stupid.

2006-06-19 6:44:44 PM
not a very big deal if she just wanted to thank God for helping her through school. It's another thing if she was trying to convince people to convert.

I'm sure there would be an uproar if she was Muslim and doing this, don't you? If she went up there on a tirade about politics they'd have censored her, too.

A high school graduation is not an appropriate venue to promote these views.

2006-06-19 6:45:03 PM
Bob N Freely: 4.7 GPA?

Yeah. AP and Honors classes add a certain amount (0.025) beyond the normal GPA. It just means she got straight A's and the maximum amount of "extra GPA" for AP and Honors. Meaningless to universities though, so... pretty much meaningless.

2006-06-19 6:45:05 PM
I would definitely kneel at that alter.

Infinitely hittable, she is. Thank God there are such beautiful women walking this Earth, and I pray I may snag one or two. Or more.

And the ACLU can't stop me.

2006-06-19 6:47:26 PM
Yea, the Clark County School district did something good. I wish i would have been there with eggs, cause as soon as she mentions her religon, i would practice what i learned in PE.

Like someone above said, Religon belongs in the chruch. Not shoved down my devil music listen throat.

5 Bucks said she has already lost her virginity which would be "against" her religon. Oh nevermind shes mormon.

2006-06-19 6:47:29 PM
If it's a graduation ceremony, sponsoring someone to preach Christian dogma to me, if I am in attendance, especially as a captive audience member, it's not just someone stating their personal view. They are using MY governemtn to press their religion onto me.

If a muslim student were to give a speech at a school where they proclaimed the Shahada, and preeched a few verses from the Qur'an, they'd either be shot or arrested. The overwhelming hypocrisy on the part of the Christian right on this issue makes a joke out of any attempt to call it a free speech issue. There's a TIME and a PLACE for that kind of thing, and giving a speech to a mixed religious audience at a secular government function is NOT THAT TIME OR PLACE.

When Christians stop imprisoning muslim professors for their political beliefs by hatemongering juries into believing that anyone who believes a certain way is a terrorist my association, or when they stop accusing anyone who speaks out against the government of treason, maybe then you'll be taken seriously on matters of Freedom of Expression. As it is, forcing your religious beliefs into OUR government is a violation of OUR Freedom of Expression, because you're removing OUR government's religious neutrality from our lives and replacing it with one that caters to your agenda, and yes we damn well have a right to put a stop to it. Don't like it? Send your kids to a private school. PUBLIC schools are no place for PRIVATE agendas.

2006-06-19 6:48:18 PM
The school had to approve the speech - a school-sanctioned speech shouldn't be pro-a-single-religion. This isn't difficult. If she wanted to stand outside and shout about Christ, go ahead, but not here.

She's an attention whore. No less than that "all of you cheated through high school" kid from a week ago.

Where's voting? pwhp_67 wins!!

2006-06-19 6:48:28 PM
But if she doesn't repeatedly praise God in a public setting, how would He know that she appreciates his divine guidance and support?

Why are you so intolerant?

Lots of selfish farkers here today.

2006-06-19 6:48:45 PM
From the unedited speech:

"My fellow graduates, parents, faculty and staff... I just wanted to say that I wouldn't be here today without the moral support of a certain Jesus Christ. For the next five hours, I will be relating my personal relationship with him to you..."

No wonder they cut her off at that point...

2006-06-19 6:48:48 PM
how come girls like that don't attend my church? (average age = 103)

2006-06-19 6:49:18 PM
Isn't the ACLU supposedly there to protect civil liberties, not help restrict them?

2006-06-19 6:51:20 PM
Christianity is a little different than say a job or hobby. Christianity is a lifestyle, and therefore I would think that you could make a pretty good legal case that the school was discriminating on her personality or whatever legal terms they use for it. besides, what's so scary about the word Christ? Let her say it, what's it going to hurt?

2006-06-19 6:51:26 PM
Remember, according to the other christians like her, god is to busy killing american soldier for defending people that "choose" to be geh.

2006-06-19 6:52:16 PM
You're allowed to thank God, you're not allowed to proselytize. A 750 word speech that contains 10 references to religion is ridiculous. The school district was right, the valedictorian was stubborn and her insistance that it was a freedom of speech issue in a public school setting belies just how little she has actually learned in high school.

Of course, that won't stop the stupid little attention whore from nailing herself to her own cross, and planting herself at the knees of thousands of frothing conservatives while they circle jerk themselves into a fabled Christian Persecution Bukkake Party all over her retarded corpse.

Cripes. It's so predictable.
