I prefer hallucinogenic ergotism, myself. But whatever.

So... If you're deathly allergic to mold, moldy pancake mix can kill you? Why is the article limited to, or at least focusing on, pancake mix? Wouldn't anything moldy be something you'd want to avoid?

2006-06-16 2:11:04 PM
I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that maybe you shouldn't be eating any foods that are 2 years old.

boojl: Wouldn't anything moldy be something you'd want to avoid?

Sssh! Don't spoil all the scare-mongering fun!

After this word from our sponsors: If you left a fire burning in the fireplace and then had a huge gas leak,
YOUR HOUSE COULD EXPLODE WITHOUT WARNING!

Will no one think of the bunnies?!

boojl: For one, you might not even be aware you have a mold allergy unless exposed in sufficient quantity/concentration. Secondly, there are lots and lots of types of mold - even sensitive people may not have reactions to all of them. And there might be something about pancake mixes that fosters the growth of certain "bad" molds - I would suspect the buttermilk and egg additives.

But yeah -- old and moldy food of any sort probably isn't the best stuff to be eating.

The article makes it sound like they were aware of the allergy.

They said a 19-year-old who suffered from a mold allergy

Unless, of course, they mean she suffered from it from the time she ate the pancakes to the time she died.

Not a word of a lie, on Toronto's CityNews tonight it's about how tending your garden can kill your unborn fetus.
And they announce it exactly the way the headline reads.

The saddest part is the lady used to do pretty good health stories, but the station is trying to get ratings for their news, so now it's all death and dismemberment by oxygen...

2006-06-16 3:53:02 PM
I wonder it eating old meat can kill you? Can other rotten food kill you? I demand more research in this area!

Oh... wait...

2006-06-16 3:53:50 PM
I'm fairly sure I have a box a Bisquick in my pantry that my wife had when we first moved in together nearly four years ago.

Would you say it is time for people to panic, and run amok in the streets?
Yes, I would Kent.

I was just sitting here thinking to myself,

"Hmmm, I have some damp moldy three year old pancake mix in the cabinet - mmmmmm I know what's for dinner tonight!"

but now that I've read this article I think I might opt for Taco Bell.

WHO EATS OLD MOLDY PANCAKE MIX?

/or even new moldy pancake mix for that matter
