This is similar to one I posted way back when, but that one only had the floats in it, and no flags. Hope this doesn't violate the spirit of "no repeats"

Note that the only editing of this was resize and sharpen; it's a picture of a parachutist with a flag,
inside an arc of a rainbow - rainarc? - that went entirely around the sun for a few hours that day -
good timing.

More of these can be viewed in my Webshots

gallery.

I apologize to everyone who read last week's forum for that week's mistake -- especially to chakalakasp. I understand how that could have be construed as inappropriate, even though I didn't intend it to be.

If chakalakasp put my ID in his ignore list (which he probably did -- and I understand why he would), and you're a close friend of his, then please tell him that I apologized.

I will only enter two photos today. The first is at some restaurant from near DC, and the second is from Cincinnati, near the top of a hill on the NE side of town by some arts center; I forget which one.

I should go back up one of these days, see if it's still there, and take it down. If you know Seattle, it was in the old water tower in Volunteer Park on Capitol Hill. Not my neighborhood, no idea why it was up there like that.

Sad thing is seeing the flag desecrated. Good thing is that we still have the freedom to do what we want and respect for the flag is not legislated but comes from the heart.

I'm an evil godless liberal pinko commie bastard...but...the Stars and Stripes is always beautiful.

Don't pay any mind to trolls or those who choose to focus on the negatives - there are threads for that, and this is not one of them. Our nation is so much more than the stereotypes, so much more than right v. left. We are all (well, except for you furriners) Americans, dammit. [Cue the choir humming the Star Spangled Banner in the background] This thread has some beautiful photography and just so's y'all know, I may steal one or two for strictly personal use.

/Sometimes you just gotta forget the petty sniping and just be f'n proud to be an f'n American

Actually, there is a fairly large section of the US Code that deals with proper care, display, and disposal of the flag.
http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/United_States_Flag_Code

Most of it carries no penalty, though. The part that does isn't often enforced. When the President signed a flag, it turns out that was an impeachable offense. For anyone else, that is a fine of $100 or up to 30 days in jail. Sounds like a "high crimes and misdemeanors" to me.

/sorry for the threadjack

Taken at a funeral of a fallen US soldier, who I shall not name. The funeral was protested by the assclowns of the Westboro Babtist Church: Fred Phelps et al. This is a sort of counter protest by the Patriot Guard Riders. We ride in and make loud bike noises to drown them out, and show the flag as a courtesy. This is at the invitation of the family. It was taken this memorial day. Best memorial day I've spent for a long time.

The great thing about working at a ski resort is that you can pick up stuff and start waving it around. This is from Whitetail Ski resorts' pirate day, from the 2005-2006 season.

veruca and Poster_NutBag: Wow... I totally didn't see it as "desecrated" or needing to be disposed of. It's an old, venerable flag. I thought that was cool.

(on a sidenote, the flag is a symbol of the country. The country is not a symbol of the flag.)

I'm an evil godless liberal pinko commie bastard...but...the Stars and Stripes is always beautiful.

And I'm an evil god-fearing right-wing fascist pig... but...the Stars and Stripes is always beautiful.

Don't pay any mind to trolls or those who choose to focus on the negatives - there are threads for that, and this is not one of them. Our nation is so much more than the stereotypes, so much more than right v. left.

It's truly sad that people on the right and people on the left get so bogged down with individual issues that they don't see the larger picture. We are one nation, under God (or not, your choice), Indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all. It may not always seem that way, but we are all essentially good people that all are striving to achieve that ideal. I know I'm not alone in the fact that I try to respect my neighbor, even if I don't agree with his or her opinions. That's how I try to achieve that ideal. To me, our American flag represents the best of that ideal.

We are all (well, except for you furriners) Americans, dammit.

Unless you are 100% Native American, you come from a long line of "furriners". Every generation has had to deal with it's own wave of immigration: German, Irish, Italian, Vietnamese, Puerto Rican, Mexican, Cuban, etc. Eventually these groups adapt to our culture and enrich it. Only the elimination of ignorance and intolerance on both sides of that issue will solve the problem. Not laws, not fences, not amnesty. But, as you said, that is a subject for another thread.

[Cue the choir humming the Star Spangled Banner in the background] This thread has some beautiful photography and just so's y'all know, I may steal one or two for strictly personal use.

I actually plan my Thursday's around the Farktography contests. I have taken a few of these, for personal use, except for staplermofo. I take those and blackmail Swingline with those.

/Sometimes you just gotta forget the petty sniping and just be f'n proud to be an f'n American

Amen.

//And I'm drunk

Lucky S.O.B.! Have one for me!

Oh yeah! Quadrajet, that was beautiful!
