My father says that the playing field is somewhat level between the two players- the pitchers in Ruth's time didn't take steroids.

Not sure if I agree fully.

all mlb teams made money off bonds... macguire, sosa, bonds, palmero, and giambi weren't the steroid users.. in the benies were popular in the 50's and 60's, and coke in the 70's and 80's

my fav drug story

btw, from wiki

quote

Ted "Double Duty" Radcliffe has stated that he would hide a piece of emery board in his belt buckle so that he could roughen the ball or even cut it. During the Minnesota Twins' 1987 pennant chase, one of their starting pitchers, Joe Niekro, was suspended when he was caught on the field with a nail file in his back pocket. Niekro's defense that he had been filing his nails in the dugout was ignored.

One of the most famous spitballers was Preacher Roe, who played for the Brooklyn Dodgers in the 1950s. Roe was renowned for his ability to control the spitball, and for his ability to throw it illegally without getting caught. Another famous user of the pitch was Gaylord Perry, who went so far as to title his autobiography Me and the Spitter. (For example, Gaylord would sniff red peppers to make his nose run -- a "snotball"? -- or he'd put vaseline on his zipper because umps would never check there.)

Can we stop the whining?

hillbillypharmacist: My father says that the playing field is somewhat level between the two players- the pitchers in Ruth's time didn't take steroids.

Plus, Ruth played when there were only white pitchers allowed in the league. You have to consider that the talent pool was somewhat lessened that way.

How about this.

Since Bonds is cheating he gets his hat handed to him.

2006-05-30 1:59:09 PM
After multiplying Babes stats by 1.1 we should divide them by 1.75 for never playing against the black/latin/asian man.

/Bonds is still teh gay

So pretty much nobody's going to care when Bonds beats all those records.

I know I don't. Anybody can juice up on 'roids and do what he did

2006-05-30 2:15:39 PM
You're wrong, Butterworth. Steroids will give him more power and hold off debilitating injuries in the short run. They won't help him see the ball better, make solid contact with the bat, work the count, or help out his swing mechanics.

Without the 'roids I imagine he'd still have well over 500, with same amount of SB and hits. Also keep in mind that he's not even had anywhere near as many at bats as the Babe had yet.

Which is the sad part, I think. Had he kept clean, he would have still had a chance at the record.

2006-05-30 2:17:45 PM
if anybody can juice up on 'roids and do what he did, why are all the proven steroid users miles behind bonds?

2006-05-30 2:17:47 PM
Since Bonds is taking steroids, we should multiply his stats by 0

HGH (the drug of choice for Giambi*) might.

falcon176 take a few hours and read Game Of Shadows.
Its a question of amount, type, and ability on top of that.

Bonds is a cheater.
Selig is a spineless greedy weenie.
I blame/hate Bonds, but Selig is the true enemy of baseball.

anyway, screw bonds. ken griffey jr. is the shiat
divide griffey's home runs by games and then do the same for bonds
griffey- 542/2150=.252 home runs/game
bonds- 715/2773=.258 home runs/game
if he wasn't injured all the time he'd be over 600 already

Not when there are 400 major league jobs instead of 750.

Look at expansion years 1961 and 1998, when Maris and McGwire set records, or the 1969 expansion, when Killebrew hit more homers than anybody would until the 1977 expansion, when George Foster topped 50 for the only time (except Big Cecil) until the next expansion, when things got totally out of control?

How about not playing each opponent 22 times when pitchers threw complete games and any given starter might have 25 opportunities to figure out how to pitch you?

Today's worst pitchers are better than the 50s best pitchers. Stop comparing eras.

I SAID STOP.

2006-05-30 3:29:12 PM
Wintermute, I thought Bonds had more at bats than Ruth to get to 714?

2006-05-30 3:36:21 PM
Thank you BingoBob.
Until you can take actual pitchers from Babe's era and have them face today'shiatters and vice versa, there will never be a reasonable way to compare the numbers. There have probably been as many pitchers on steroids as there have been hitters.

2006-05-30 4:53:53 PM
Barry Bonds has had 860 more career at bats than Ruth (and played in 270 more games).

Hehe.

Wintermute: Without the 'roids I imagine he'd still have well over 500

You think roids gained him 200 HR? Since he "started" in qhat 1996? 20 HR a year? Are you serious?

Players we KNOW have been on steriods have hit next to none. Most guys caught on steriodshiat 5 or 6 before and 6 or 7 after.

Push the button, Max!

Then: No latino, black pitchers (less talent). Pitchers frequently went entire game (easier to hit off a fatigued pitcher). Ground-rule doubles were considered home runs. Less "tricky" pitches.

As said above, there is really no way to compare the times or players from different eras. Would Ruth be as good if he played now? Probably not. However, there is really no way to tell by how much.

Hey, check it out...speaking of 'roids, Giambi* just homered to put the Yankees* ahead of Detroit!
