Farewell and adieu to you, fair Spanish ladies.
Farewell and adieu, you ladies of Spain.
For we've received orders for to sail back to Boston.
And so nevermore shall we see you again.

I think you're gonna need a stiffer boat.
2006-05-29 04:16:16 PM
Come on, someone just post the picture and get it over with...
2006-05-29 04:16:41 PM
That'll learn em.
2006-05-29 04:16:53 PM
Coincidentally, I plan on tagging something when I get home tonight and it, too, is inflatable.

Ultimately, it appears that the shark got the worse end of the exchange.

Which is as it should be.

Quint: Inflatable research boat? You go inside the boat?

[Hooper nods]

Quint: Boat goes in the water, you go in the boat. Shark's in the water. Our shark.

Goto Boobies...

Thank God, it didn't have a chance to use its frikkin' laser beams!

Did it look like this? [image from too old to be available]

I wonder if it is difficult to get brown stains out of a wetsuit?
2006-05-29 04:20:03 PM
All I could think of was a fat guy chomping on a blow up doll.

go figger
2006-05-29 04:20:17 PM
This begs the question, "Why would you try and tag sharks in an inflatable boat?"

I hope the answer is "Because it was the only boat available."

If the answer is "Derrrrr" then I'm really very, very disappointed in them.

//Not me!
//Nor do I know who they are.
2006-05-29 04:22:31 PM
Somehow I think they haven't thought their cunning plan all the way through.

/got nothin
//though a 15' shark would go from the baseline to almost the freethrow line, that's a bigun
2006-05-29 04:22:46 PM
did the boat shortly thereafter set some sort of speed record??
2006-05-29 04:23:59 PM
15 feet? That's like 3 of me standing on top of each other! Woahhh
2006-05-29 04:26:17 PM
Y'all know me. Know how I earn a livin'. I'll catch this bird for you, but it ain't gonna be easy. Bad fish. Not like going down to the pond and chasing bluegills and tommycocks. This shark, swallow you whole. No shakin', no tenderizin', down you go. And we gotta do it quick, that'll bring back your tourists, put all your businesses on a payin' basis. But it's not gonna be pleasant. I value my neck a lot more than three thousand bucks, chief. I'll find him for three, but I'll catch him, and kill him, for ten. But you've gotta make up your minds. If you want to stay alive, then ante up. If you want to play it cheap, be on welfare the whole winter. I don't want no volunteers, I don't want no mates, there's too many captains on this island. Ten thousand dollars for me by myself. For that you get the head, the tail, the whole damn thing.
2006-05-29 04:26:29 PM
yeah, hook the shark, bring it next to the boat, then report that the boat was "attacked"
2006-05-29 04:30:27 PM
They caught a shark, not the shark. Big difference. I could've proved it this afternoon, by cutting that one open and examining his stomach contents. Also, his bite was too small.
2006-05-29 04:31:59 PM
Gonna need a bigger boat
2006-05-29 04:32:26 PM
What a dumb article! Tigers aren't fish! Morans!
2006-05-29 04:41:48 PM
though a 15' shark would go from the baseline to almost the freethrow line...

Or also between any two other things roughly 15' apart. Just sayin'.
2006-05-29 04:41:57 PM
Use number #14537 for Duct-Tape.........
2006-05-29 04:42:21 PM
I'd bite your shiatty little boat too if you were trying to stab me in the ass-fin with a harpoon for "scientific" purposes.
2006-05-29 04:45:04 PM
Its not scary its normal.. dipshiat
2006-05-29 04:50:57 PM
This whole damn thread is full of win
2006-05-29 04:55:47 PM
They should have brought a bear along with them, to hold down the shark while they tag it:

"I'd bite your shiatty little boat too if you were trying to stab me in the ass-fin with a harpoon for "scientific" purposes."

AND cut open your belly, stick something in, then sew it back up. Is it any wonder God keeps throwing tornadoes, hurricanes and earthquakes at us ? Maybe humans are His "Science Fair Project" ...

2006-05-29 04:58:45 PM
UberSmyth, let's be reasonable, huh? This was not the time or the place to perform some kind of a half-assed autopsy on a fish... And wasn't going to stand there and see that thing cut open and see that little Kintner boy spill out all over the dock.
2006-05-29 05:16:24 PM
You go in the rubber raft?

Raft goes in the water?

Shahk's in the water?

Our shahk?

See primary postification.

Whose brilliant plan was it to go shark fishing in an inflatable boat? Morans.
2006-05-29 06:06:03 PM
2006-05-29 06:20:38 PM
Sounds like they were using the same tackle my 65 year old parents used this weekend to catch 3" Bluegill.
2006-05-29 06:27:04 PM
I'm a scared of sharks. I've only swam in the ocean once, when I was about 8 years old. That was fun, but with what I know about sharks now I doubt I'll ever do it again. The risk ain't worth it. I'll go on a boat, though.

Sharks like to bite things.

2006-05-29 06:58:38 PM
FTP: The team grabbed fins and tail to turn the shark belly-up, a position in which sharks become calm and easier to control.

Skipper: Okay, here's the plan. We hook a 15 ft shark and drag it up to our inflatable boat.

Crew: Um, okay

Skipper: Now, if it goes berserk and starts ripping the boat to shreds, you guys grab it by the fins and tickle its belly

Crew: Maybe you should hire some undocumented aliens for this part of the job.
2006-05-29 07:42:16 PM
um... one thing...

Submitter called it a raft? Rafts don't have engines.

Also, this is a rigid hull inflatable. It has a solid hull, surrounded by a multi-chamber inflatable section made out of Polyvinyl Chloride, Polyurethane and Hypalon. It's tougher than leather and puncture-resistant. It could probably resist a shark bite better than most fiberglass boats.

Am I the only person who remembers that tiger sharks will ingest (or at least attempt to ingest) anything?
2006-05-30 10:12:29 AM
I work for NOAA, and I'm really getting a kick out of these replies (no really, I do and I am)

I have nothing really to add, other than the fact that I am sad that I work for the office that manages the large research ship mentioned (the HI'IALAKAI) and I had to read this news on Fark.

/Love NOAA
//also love fark
///also love sharks for the slashie trifecta!

Released unharmed
