"Unfortunately, the press gallery has taken the view they are going to be the opposition to the Government,"

Newsflash, Stevie - they are. They are supposed to question those in authority to keep them in check. But then again, you knew that already, so I'll just assume this is twattish tantrum behaviour on your behalf.

I may have said he frightened me before, but he truly does frighten me now. He doesn't want to be accountable to the public, and whenever things don't go his way, he throws a fit. The commission on gov't reform was dumped because his FIRST candidate to lead the commission was rejected.

What a dick.

It's all about presentation. The media are (supposedly) neutral, but yes it is there job to report the facts to the public. How it's presented is another story. Everyone has a viewpoint, including not only reporters but editors as well. Any paper/telecast saying they are not neutral is lying. And it does affect the story unfortunately. Now, having said that, pissing in the media's face ain't the brightest thing to do.

their, dammit, not there.

I thought that, during ht elast election in particular, the media treated him fairly compared to his counterparts. If anything, the media helped him reconstruct his image, which got him elected in the first place (that and hte Liberal meltdown, but his image helped a lot). The various media outlets may have a bias, but, they are still the major source of information for the average voter. If he pisses them off too much, the next election campaign will not be very positive for him on the PR front.

Dammit again.

I dunno about treating him fairly...what's fair? Focusing on the negative? The perceived negative? Focusing on the corrupt Libs? But not jetting around on a SeaDoo certainly helped.

fairand abalnaced coverage of waht he was saying, and not an excessive obsession with anything negative, at least, no moreso than any of the other leaders.

"Let's see.... from who shall I take the first question? How 'bout from Ezra Levant?"

"Second question? I give the floor to Ezra Levant."

"Third? Michael Cohen."

"Fourth? Ezra."

I saw a clip of that press conference today, and he let his aide interrupt a foillow-up question because the reporter was attempting to expose his hypocrisy.

I love* control freaks

That's two threads GL'd bashing on the Canadian PM.

/trifecta anyone?

I guess Fark will be having its question priviledges suspended.

Still, this press gallery control thing isn't new. As Paul Wells points out, it was standard practice for scary right-wingers like Trudeau, Pearson, and St. Laurent.

This fixed election thing, now that's crafty.

Trudeau right wing? What the hell are you talking about?

Sarcasm, dude. (or poor knowledge of Canadian history)

What a biatch.

Mr Harper said no Liberal prime minister had faced such effrontery and decided to deal only with more friendly local press.

The main reason they're friendly is because they're clamoring over who actually gets to ask a question to the PM, not that they're on Harper's side. Of course they'll be friendlier. It's a big scoop for them.

For a guy campainging on government accountability this guy isnt standing up to his word very well. The media is the most prevalent and expidient way to create government accountability.

They were interviewing people on the streets and some people were like : " oh thier just razzing him cause hes a conservative and the media hate him." Well this is a wrong view to take. The medias acces to the governments actions is a MAJOR source of accountability.
Steve you just made a big fark up.

/Trudeau was an asshat to western canada - he screwed us badly.

hankhorsey: Still, this press gallery control thing isn't new. As Paul Wells points out, it was standard practice for scary right-wingers like Trudeau, Pearson, and St. Laurent.

it matters less that he did it than it does that he did it after promising greater accountability and transparency in government, which is exactly why he won. Now, however, he's showing quite a turnaround, and is doing the opposite of what he promised, and pissing off the media that he'll need to get his message across.

Theres accountability, and then theres media bias and spinning the message. For years I've seen "news" outlets like CBC and the Star constantly writing negative press, and outright spinning the message to make it seem like Harper was growing horns and turning into the Devil.

The media is who we count on for a BALANCED opinion. And I have seen very little of that balance for the Conservatives since the Liberals were in power. Its been nothing but "Extremist, Edgy, Right-wing, American-style, Bush-loving, Bible-thumping, Gay-bashing neocons" from the major outlets.

Their job is to show the news, not spin it.

I for one, am pretty sure this wont last, however, I'll enjoy the time that the media finally get a kick in the ass and realise that the "Natural Governing Party" was just kicked out, and to get over it.

And due to the only 20 posts I actually see in this thread, I can pretty much say for a fact that most Canadians don't really give a damn. They should, this is a non-story, and the media are just having a hissy fit.

2006-05-27 4:50:21 PM
Hey, Bud,

That ain't the media being biased. That's a classic case of "If the shoe fits..."

Don't we all?

They just want to ask him what happened at the bilderburg meeting he attended as leader of the opposition, that's all.

If Harper is going to be such a f*cking pussy about having to face the press, he should resign, and now. I'm sure he's been on his knees before his lord and master to earn himself a US citizenship by now anyway.
