Dominionists are alive and well and voting on the hill.
Comforting isn't it?

That's right, little dhimmi, worry about those evil Christians over there...

Let's suppose that Jesus was the son of god.
Back in the time that he was crucified, the Romans had only basic weapons. They didn't even have a cannon yet.
If, as legand has it, he returns; we could totally destroy him 1000 times over.
These idiots base their whole life's philosophy on a guy I could take out with what I have in my basement?

I don't take chances. When Jebus comes back, I have my .38 Colt pistol (plastic grips, but I'm thinking of having some cool wooden ones hand-made), and my Winchesther .30-30 model 94. Jebus never had to deal with the lever-action rifle that won the West. (My dad has the 92 model, but my grandma gave me her 94-model hunting rifle when I turned 13. I consider it a sort-of Native American bar-mitzvah -- My grandma was a Pueblo Indian from the Ysleta tribe.)

And if that doesn't stop him, my dad has an arsenal which includes an Egyptian-made AK-47, Colt .45 (not the drink), and a very rare .22 calibre rifle worth about $20,000, just to name a VERY FEW. If I can't stop Jebus with the bullets, I'll try to win him over with the trade value of my dad's rifle. Every man/diety has his price.

Not submitter, but this was the focus of tonight's episode of Fresh Air with Terry Gross on NPR. Click here to hear the interview with the book's author.

FWIW, she makes some very good points in that interview.

Final post (for now), but does anyone else think that quote from that one guy would fit perfectly as a speech given by a movie villain?

"Christians have an obligation, a mandate, a commission, a holy responsibility to reclaim the land for Jesus Christ -- to have dominion in civil structures, just as in every other aspect of life and godliness.
But it is dominion we are after. Not just a voice.
It is dominion we are after. Not just influence.
It is dominion we are after. Not just equal time.
It is dominion we are after.
World conquest. That's what Christ has commissioned us to accomplish."

...followed by cheers from the masses as the heroes look on in dread.

Quoted for truth. A more antithetical message to the teachings of Jesus couldn't be crafted if you actually tried.

Visiting my girlfriend's parents in Orlando, I saw a guy at one of the theme parks wearing a t-shirt that said JesUSAves. The USA part had a flag overlay.

There are many copies
...And they have a PLAN...

-Seriously, these guys are committed as only the religious nutball can be. They're in it for the long haul and will try and drag this country back (kicking and screaming) to the 17th century if people don't stand up to them. They'll fail in the end but the fight will tear the nation apart.

The thing about Christian nationalism is it's light on Christian and heavy on nationalism. They seriously believe that the United States is the New Jerusalem and is authorized by God to conquer in his name.

These people are insane.

humblegod: thanks you saved me from having to post by saying everything i thought. these people are twisting things in an amasing way.

Wait, what? Christians are planning to rebuild the temple. We can't have any of that. They are not qualified to certify the red heffer.

Im other news,

Sounds boring.

Compared to everything else out there, I'd rather let these men to continue to sit at the table of government than force them outside the establishment.

Everyone has to believe in something, better something productive than something destructive.

/this might be only marginally productive
//farking, that is

FTFA:
"In the Christian nationalist vision of America, non-believers would be free to worship as they choose, as long as they know their place."

That my friends is why there are religious wars even today.

The book looks like a good read if nothing other than know your enemy. The last line about sums up my views on the issue. "Christianity is a religion. Christian nationalism is a political program, and there is nothing sacred about it."

Dominionists are bad news. Religious fervor + Nationalism has never made a great pair. Hell, just one or the other is bad enough, to combine the two is obscene.

2006-05-12 03:47:00 AM
Michelle Goldberg is a senior writer at Salon.com, where she has reported widely on the religious right. Her book "Kingdom Coming: The Rise of Christian Nationalism" will be published in June by W.W. Norton.

Salon.com gets a woody any time they can find a way to attack the Christian right wing conspiracy. It is there impetus for existence after the Juanita rape allegations came out, as per conversations and articles by the founders of Salon.com.

So, yeah, it's another smarmy metropolitan Jewish woman going after the big bad Christian evangelists akin to the fear mongering of the politicized ADL in recent years, anything to make a buck for the leadership and keep the urban Jewish population on the plantation.

2006-05-12 03:47:35 AM
There's a longer and IMHO better written article here (pops, you have to watch a 10-second ad to read the entire article) that goes into the various flavors of Xtian nationalism such as Dominionists and Reconstructionists.

If these people don't scare you, try reading this book.

I'm more worried about the Millenialists in Congress and the White House who think the Rapture is coming in our lifetime.

That sort of belief rather skews your sense of responsibility towards the future.

There improved that to the correct level of tentacle rape for this topic. I concur on the improper use of the interesting tag.

You posted a link to a fiction novel. Hello, IT IS FICTION.

These people will continue to grow in numbers, but continue to lose their percentage of the total US population. So, in the end, they'll be overrun like the original Native Americans were. That can give you solace.

The Rapture in our lifetimes people deeply bother me also. Fatalism like that leads to dark paths in our future.

RamblingKey:

Hello, it's a well-written, well-thought out novel of an America that is ruled along strictly Biblical lines.

In other words, a fleshed-out description of what the Reconstructionists would like to see.

Why do I have the feeling that Jesus would have the same kind of conversations with these guys that He had with the Pharisees?

Please bear in mind that these people are a small minority among Christians in the United States. Many of us are disgusted by the wanton politicizing of our faith and the guilt by association tactics used on us by those who oppose them politicially.

Jesus loves you regardless of your politics.

My attitude on religion/state is that state employees should be forbidden to make any religious statements while on the job. I gagged when reading a Fark article yesterday:

"This is trash, and I hope this is the end of it for our community and for the Christian community and everybody out here. I hope this is the end of it," said Pocola Police Chief Eric Helms.

I mean seriously. What does his god have to do with his duty as a police officer?

This is Michelle's biography written by her publisher.

She was going to pro-abortion rallies in front of abortion clincs while in high school. She got her Masters in Journalism from UC Berkeley. She was a music reviewer before finding her niche as a anti everything not left wing writer for a marginal online publication that should have been bankrupt at least twice already if it wasn't for the monetary intervention of wealthy Democrat donors.

She's just another sensationalist, light on the qualifications, and an obvious partisan.

She is part of the choir, singing to the choir, about issues that only her fellow partisans would want to hear of. Her biases are so apparent there leaves no room for discussion, she would have none of it.

She's out doing the promotion circuit, and Drew and the mods just gave her a huge publicity hit (for free?).

What bothers me most is that this relativly small group of Xtians is a militant political movement who preach from the pulpit that their followers have an obligation to run for office and pack school boards etc.

Most people don't feel a religious obligation to run for office, and that ends up warping the democratic process a bit for local elections. Intelligent Design in schools anyone?

What's funny is they often say this is a response to the Vast Jewish Conspiracy...

If there is a vast jewish conspiracy, it's certainly a lot sneakier than the very loud and in-your-face Xtian Reconstructionist conspiracy.

I attend gun shows in my area regularly and have met more than a couple of people preaching the same message. They also seem to be well armed FWIW.

Anyone else get the impression that something in this article struck a nerve with RamblingKey?

What is she saying that is inaccurate?

I am Jewish, I'm not saying "it's da Jooos". I'm saying a certain segment of the ethnic but non-religious, porgressive Jewish establishment make their careers out of fear mongering to little old Jewish women and their mensch husbands in the NYC metro and Palm Beach areas. Goldberg here, is one of them. And so are the people who pay her Salon.com salary, and so are the people (mostly) who run the publisher of her book, W.W. Norton & Company (i.e. Paul Krugman's publisher also).
