I've lived in Japan, and I've eaten it. You're not missing much. No idea why the government has made it into such a big cause.
2006-05-11 10:10:22 AM
I'm all too familiar with the phrase "languishing meat".

Tell me again, why is whale meat so much worse than, say, fish or cow?

/not pro or con, just don't understand why it's such an issue

Gimme a prime rib, rare, stat!

Now, if we replace "Japanese" with "American" and "whale meat" with "beef," then we can begin to solve our energy crisis.

To wit:

1. Most of the corn grown in the U.S. goes to feed livestock. If the number of livestock were curtailed, the corn saved could be used to produce ethanol.

2. The production of every calorie of beef energy requires the expenditure of, depeding on who you listen to, 35-80 calories of fossil fuel energy. Not a very efficient way to make food! (For soy protein the figure is something like 4 calories of fuel per calorie of food energy.)

So can they ship it to Alaska and let people make a house out of it or something?

it's funny how there's an ad on the right about hungry african children.

2006-05-11 10:18:49 AM

Tell me again, why is whale meat so much worse than, say, fish or cow?

Because whales were hunted to the brink of extinction and are still rare and endangered.

I could also raise the point that whales whales appear to be fairly intelligent creatures, but I think that the first point suffices and avoids a descent into endless sidetracks and dissents.

TFA: Feeding whale meat to schoolchildren doesn't make it ok.

It doesn't?

It's on sale in my local shop, both the red meat and the blubber (whale bacon, high in mercury apparently). It doesn't seem to be a big seller. I remember telling my mom about how the Japanese eat whalemeat, and she said she had to eat it during the war due to rationing, but could not understand anyone wanting to eat it voluntarily.

I've had it; the first time I had it, the Japanese I was with didn't tell me what it was, and I thought it tasted a bit like beef.
Other times I've had it I haven't enjoyed it (so obviously, I don't eat it anymore). Also, I've heard that a lot of the whalemeat on sale is actually dolphin meat.
2006-05-11 10:28:32 AM
Ban the "Your dog want's...." cliche!
2006-05-11 10:31:00 AM
I live in Japan now. No one eats Whale meat here anymore. And on top of that it's got like 1400 times the FDA acceptible amount of mercury,

I find that scary on two levels: One, that theres so much mercury in whales (they must all be mad as hatters), and two, that the FDA has an 'acceptable limit' amount for mercury that isn't zero.
2006-05-11 10:37:21 AM

Because whales were hunted to the brink of extinction and are still rare and endangered.

ehhh, no. The species the Japanese hunt are not endangered at all. Only a few species of whales are still endangered.

/Whale meat is o.k. but nothing special, and too toxic because of the pollution in the seas.
2006-05-11 10:39:45 AM

/your dog wants Tofurkey

Yeah, um... I don't think my dog would even eat that crap!
I sure as hell am not!

I'd never serve tofu to a dog. That's animal cruelty, that is.

The only good use for tofu is to disguise it as flan and serve it as to some poor unsuspecting victim for dessert.

The Japanese are really evil communists from the Horse Shoe Nebula. Whales should not be hunted, they should all be dancing with their families in their castles on the moon.
2006-05-11 10:54:23 AM
Japanese over fishing of whales is one topic I have learned to NEVER bring up with my (Japanese) girlfriend. We were watching TV and there was something about whales on. I mentioned that Japanese whaling ships keep coming over here and killing our whales. And how the Japanese had hunted all the whales around Japan.

Oh man ... she let me have it.

"We use all parts of the whale. We don't waste anything! It's our tradition. Blah blah blah."

I never brought up the subject again.

Well, if it weren't for teh mad cow disease, they would be eating steak!

I still don't know why Greenpeace doesn't whip up a whole bunch of Purina Whale Chow full of otherwise harmless bacteria, or a harmless chemical, that makes whale meat so utterly repulsive that nobody will eat it.

It would be hilarious to see an ultra-expensive Japanese restaurant, full of their great gourmands, just puking their guts out all over the parking lot.
2006-05-11 11:14:14 AM
From what I have heard, the whale meat is piling up because the Japanese don't want to eat it at the price they are asking and that the folks selling it are just trying a deBeers style market price jack up. (And failing at it.)

When I went down to Antarctica for a month a couple of years back, I saw a bunch of Jap "scientific whaling vessels". Supposedly, they were just supposed to kill the Minke whales, as their numbers have rebounded. However, it was told to me by a number of different Antarctic sources that these Jap vessels will frequency "mess up" and "accidentally" kill another species-even though a trained 5 year old with binoculars could easily spot the difference.

The other thing is-Whales almost seem to be like puppy-dogs in a sense. We'd have a curious whale swim up to our boat almost every day... Swim on the surface and on their side to check you (and the boat) out more clearly. Whale hunting is hardly a sport.

To suggest that decimating an entire class of animal is OK because it's "cultural" ... I'm not buyin'. Is slave-ownership OK due to cultural reasons? It's time that we realize that there *are* dumb-ass cultures.

Seriously-take a few minutes and find some pics of whales killed around the 1900's, and compare them to whales spotted today. Today's whales are not only smaller, but the overall whale population isn't as diverse. A few breeds are coming back, but a few-not so much.

I, for one, say 'screw Jap culture'. It's a bad culture, and seemingly has no concept of conservation.

Japan is so 20 years ago, China rules Asia now. An Tuvula (whatever) will be 5 ft below sea level in 25 years.

I draw the line at eating animals that have a high level of intellegence; dolphins, whales, apes and monkeys. From reading Fark it seems like Floridans on my menu tho...

I never felt bad about nuking these clowns in '45. The whole basis of their culture was ripped off from the Chinese, anyway.
2006-05-11 11:34:55 AM

First off the word is JAPANESE .. not Jap.

Whaling is about the only thing Japanese do not conserve. Their recycling is way beyond anything we do here. Nothing is wasted. The limited space they have is very effectively used.

Your comments of "screw Jap culture" just proves you are an ignorant bigot who is talking out of his ass.
2006-05-11 11:36:19 AM
gjs_cds wow, just wow. Your sweeping generalizations are so burly and manly, you must get all the chicks at the local armchair bigot rallies.

whammer pukeing one's guts out on the street is already a time-honored Japanese Gourmond tradition, something to do with a love-affair with scotch whisky and an inablity to break down the alcohol.

theRascalKing is your girlfriend second-generation Japanese? Most of the people here in Osaka couldn't care less if they stopped whaling. And she's wrong on 2 counts: 1 they obviously don't use all parts of the whale and not waste anything or it wouldn't be rotting away in warehouses now, would it? and 2, while it may HAVE BEEN a tradition back in the day, now it's just an industry in it's death throwes trying to survive on the IV drip that is government-enforced marketshare.

No, she's been in Canada for 2 years.

You are preaching to the choir. I know she's wrong. I just don't tell her that. I pick my battles and Japanese whaling is not one I can win. ;)
2006-05-11 11:49:07 AM
theRascalKing I hear you, dude. On some issues I can totally convince my Japanese friends/girlfriend to do a total 180 after they hear my argument. And others they will never, ever budge on no matter what.

How long have you been in Japan? I am going to be there in June. Spending the first week in Tokyo then heading south to my gf's hometown of Ise. From there trips to Osaka, Kobe, Kyoto and Gifu.

Can't wait to chow down on some great Japanese food. :)
2006-05-11 11:58:38 AM
Its a sovereignty issue, the ganiks (greenpeace, demolibs) don't want Japan to hunt whales, so the Japanese say "damn we hate whale meat but we can't let those bastards win" so they hunt whale and feed it to the dogs. Good going Japan stick it to the man (ganiks).
2006-05-11 11:59:53 AM

I've lived here in Osaka for 3 and a half years. It's awesome. When you come to Osaka you have to try Okonomiyaki. It is the single greatest culinary contribution any culture could possibly give to the world. I like mine with noodles.
2006-05-11 12:02:54 PM

First off the word is JAPANESE .. not Jap.

Ok--so Jap is out. What about nip? Nip's ok, right?

As for being a proven ignorant bigot, I suggest you go to the polar regions and view the reality personally. See the whaling stations; view Nip vessels on their whaling expeditions. Do a bit of research on how over-whaling has farked up the antarctic eco-system by allowing an over-population of Weddell seals that complete for the whale's food source, thus negatively impacting the whale population from a strong comeback.

Yet you've got a Nip culture that sees this data, and still refuses to help. Conversely, they act in a fashion that makes the matter worse. How can a politically conservative person see this, and eco-liberal america not?

I absolutely have no guilt for calling out other cultures for their transgressions. And in this case, the Japanese are evidently on the wrong side of the fence, but try to rationalize their national selfishness with the "cultural" card. Again--I'm not buyin'.

Slacker Ninja
May you find clarity with the understanding that morals are not relative.
2006-05-11 12:04:16 PM
panxerox the term is 'gaijin' not ganiks, and it's as much a racial slur as 'jap' is. Gaikokujin is the preferred nomenclature.

But you're right, there is a fair bit of the 'you're not the bossa me' nationalism in Japans whaling stance. It's also one reason why Koizumi won't stop visiting Yasukuni Shrine, the asshat.
2006-05-11 12:09:24 PM

And the garbage continues to spew out of your mouth. Jap was never "in". It's an ignorant term used to denegrate.

I have never once said that I supported Japanese whaling. What you choose to do is denegrate an entire group of people based on the actions of a few. Proving you are an ignorant bigot. The use of the word "Nip" furthur solidifies this.

Don't you have a Klan meeting to get to?
2006-05-11 12:11:31 PM
whale is tasty. there are loads of whales. Why eat the endangered Yellowfin Tuna when there is plenty of whale meat available for the culling?
2006-05-11 12:13:39 PM

2006-05-11 12:20:02 PM
gjs_cds is 'Japanese' so hard to type? And I'm not excusing or defending the whaling practice in any way. Nor was my Joke/observation about vomit in the streets hypocritical.

People do bad things, some people's governments, friends, and even cultures go to extremes to rationalize and defend those bad things. The action is still wrong and immoral. But I take issue with saying, "It's time that we realize that there *are* dumb-ass cultures." "It's a bad culture" Especially when the culture is question is one that had a nearly 100% literacy rate back when we were re-discovering how to plow.

I agree that calling something 'a cultural tradition' is a stupid thing to do. In some cultures kidnapping and raping 12-year-olds to force them to marry you is a 'tradition' doesn't mean it's not wrong. But to say that culture is a take-it-or-leave-it proposition is ignorant of how culture works.

Culture is an Adaptive strategy, like fur or claws or hybrination. And as one's environment changes one's culture too must change. The whole point of studing other cultures is to see what they do better then we do and try to incorperate that into our own, while at the same time being able to see where we're getting it right and re-enforce those behaviors.
2006-05-11 12:20:19 PM

:Because whales were hunted to the brink of extinction and are
:still rare and endangered.

ehhh, no. The species the Japanese hunt are not endangered at all. Only a few species of whales are still endangered.

I'm always willing to suffer correction. What species of whale do they hunt?
