(Some Guy)   Scientists want to inject "quantum dots" with genetically modified firefly protein into your body to light things up and look around. "Light bulbs aren't cool enough," they explain. What could possibly go wrong?   (livescience.com) divider line

Aren't they already using fiber optics to look around inside? What's stopping them from projecting light through the fiber?

Can I get a bunch on my finger? Besides the ET-thingy, it'd be really handy to have a built-in flashlight.

I don't get what's so scary about this article...but maybe that's because I'm a neuroscientist.

muninsfire: You could, but it wouldn't be bright enough to be usable (you could just apply a lentivirus containing the luciferase...I don't know of a good way to get the quantum dot in though).

Given anything the scale of these dots would not last long in the human body, no worries. As for the genetically engineered stuff, it's just the protein. Not actual genetic material.

I, for one, welcome our glowing quantum dot injecting overlords.

I second the quantum dot tattoos, actually my boyfriend is in college for genetic research, and some of the ideas he came up with (if it werent for the fact that they'd be grossly illegal) would be really cool

quick and dirty concept of quantum dot tattoos

submitter is a moran who can't come up with a unique headline? That's what could possibly go wrong.

sweet. i ran a dual TCF/LEF-Luciferase assay this morning with the renilla (sea pansy) gene.

i wouldnt exactly call bioluminescent vectors "quantum dots".
silly stanford, when will they learn?

How much does that pay?
