Ric Romero, call your office.

2006-02-15 11:08:26 AM
Your tax dollars paid for a $400 massage, it better have had a happy ending.

2006-02-15 11:09:04 AM
Hmmmm. Who would want me to focus my anger on a few dumbasses, instead of considering how horribly this debacle was handled both from a preparedness standpoint, and a recovery standpoint.

The federal government, maybe?

Blame a few idiots all you want, but your missing just how completely unprepared this country is for any kind of disaster. So...learn nothing from Katrina, but just wait until the sh*t hits the fan again in this country. Who are you going to blame then?

2006-02-15 11:14:03 AM
That's EXACTLY what I would've spent it on...

2006-02-15 11:16:07 AM
Geez, what were they supposed to spend it on... food and clothing?

glenlivid:

The federal government, maybe?

You're going to let the local and state governments off the hook too?

2006-02-15 11:35:35 AM
Wouldn't surprise me either, slayer199.

So, Blame Bush.

But not the Hurricane,

Or the people responsible for building and maintaining the levees, or the local officials who re-rirected moneis away from engineering projects to their own pork projects on dry land,

Not the Governor of the State,

Not the Mayor of the City,

Not the people who could have gotten out ( some couldn't ) or the people who shot at the rescuers, or the people who ...

/Makes perfect sense ..

President Bush hates porn, tattoos and massages.

2006-02-15 11:45:34 AM
/directed ... re-DIRected monies. *sulks away, looking for coffee ... cofffiiieeeeee!!!!

2006-02-15 11:52:25 AM
Is there a breakdown on the approximate percentage of the money that was used for. . . .frivolous uses? I'm betting it is low enough that I won't be too mad.

2006-02-15 11:52:40 AM
But giving debit cards to poor black people seemed like such a good idea at the time.

2006-02-15 11:53:25 AM
Your tax dollars paid for a $400 massage, it better have had a happy ending.

Since I paid for it, I am off to give myself a happy ending. Hopefully my co-workers understand.

2006-02-15 11:53:27 AM
Let's just napalm future hurricane carnage sites to save money.

2006-02-15 11:53:30 AM
Some of them even had to buy two seats on airplaines.

- I agree, if I was in the position to do so, I would definitely blow the money after going through something so horrible.

Cue people who don't bat an eye at gov't waste, corporate welfare and insane defense spending getting indignant about "their tax money" in 3...2...1...

2006-02-15 11:54:25 AM
A massage parlour? Well now I can say there is a happy ending to this story.

We need more happiness in our lives.

2006-02-15 11:54:33 AM
well..duh.

/government programs = no accountability

2006-02-15 11:08:26 AM You're the jerk... jerk

Your tax dollars paid for a $400 massage, it better have had a happy ending.

And if the US Govt had paid for that massage, it would have cost $10,000. So at least we saved some money.

Someone moved into the condo next to me and his wife's family in the one next to that.

The best people I ever met. They hated Austin, but they were really good people. Every time I was out smoking BBQ he'd come out, we'd toss each other beers.

The condo assoc was charging then twice as much for rent because FEMA was paying it. I talked to at least 4 displaced families (same families), all of them, 2x as much. I own mine, but I know what rent goes for.

I was floored. Literally, 2x as much rent.

Now that was a crime worth looking into. It's their money, let em spend it.

We would spend like 60 bucks on food every couple of days and have a huge BBQ or boil and it'd feed 12 people; that's pretty damn good. Yea sometimes they'd use their money for a TV or a truck or whatever was gone from the storm; a video camera to record the whole mess that was their house.

But god damn, people who sold to FEMA-dependant people were raping them, because, they could.

Welcome to america, land of making the buck.

2006-02-15 11:55:47 AM
The only transaction I don't have a problem is they guy who paid off his traffic fines to get his license reinstated. While not a necessity, having a license would help him get around and make working easier.

2006-02-15 11:55:53 AM
I noticed on the list that one of the purchases was at a store called "Condoms to go" - isn't the to go part usually implied? I usually don't rip it open and get to work till I get to the house/hotel room/back of car.

2006-02-15 11:56:00 AM
Oh NOOOOES! They bought gunnnns!

Heaven forbid they should learn to defend themselves after all the crap they saw going down in that city.

2006-02-15 11:56:23 AM
Man, and to think I totally blew my FEMA money on rent, gas, clothing, and food. What the hell was I thinking?

2006-02-15 11:56:52 AM
$1,100 on an engagement ring - cheapskate

2006-02-15 11:57:00 AM
The table on the second page is amusing: Payments that did not appear necessary to satisfy immediate emergency needs.

$1300 for a .45. Well that is a little pricey considering that a Glock 21 has a MSRP of under $600. But if that's the asking price, well, what you're gonna do? With all the looting and general craziness going on, I can see how someone would not be too concerned about paying a premium for a firearm. If the purchase was made months after Katrina... not so necessary.

$1000, partial bail bond payment. Well, if your immediate needs include not being in jail, then I'd say that coming up with that money is sort of necessary.

$700, payment of prior traffic violations for driver's license reinstatement. Again, sort of necessary if you want to get the hell out of there without getting arrested the first time a cop pulls you over. If your license is listed as suspended and a LEO pulls you over, you are going to jail for DOS, plain and simple. So paying the fine, ie. the money you owe, doesn't seem all that unreasonable to me.

The diamond engagement ring, tatoo and massage, well, that's a different story though.

"But...b-b-but...they're victims! Bush doesn't care about them! Kanye West told me so!"

2006-02-15 11:57:53 AM
Some people are irresponsible with money?!? Shocking!

2006-02-15 11:58:04 AM
This is where my donations went??
I'll be sure to donate more next time.

2006-02-15 11:58:21 AM
dewihafta: Heaven forbid they should learn to defend themselves after all the crap they saw going down in that city.

And yet, as it turns out, it was probably better to have a gun before Katrina than after, what with our crime rate being so freaking low, now. (Thanks, Houston)

2006-02-15 11:58:46 AM
But they didn't spend it on Hieneken beer, that was for free.

2006-02-15 11:58:57 AM
maymay

Ditto. If I lost it all in a hurricane and was given thousands in aid, I'd blow maybe $200 (tops) on booze and strippers. Then I'd try to keep the rest for food and smokes and look for a job.

2006-02-15 11:59:06 AM
Bush doesn't care about them! Kanye West told me so!

You know how much money property owners MADE off of them?

Of course Bush cares. Scamming left and right, all of them big-ticket contributers to his home state's government.

Damn right, they fed his ass because of this storm.

2006-02-15 11:59:08 AM
Kanye West doesn't care about white people.

Unless they buy his albums.

2006-02-15 11:59:13 AM
Well the .45 is legit. Afterall the card has the constution on it.

Put the people who abuse it to work picking up some of those dead bodies that are still around.

2006-02-15 11:59:15 AM
O RLY?

2006-02-15 11:59:20 AM
This is clearly a Rove-ian plot to persecute the downtrodden and oppressed minorities in this country.

It was obviously only released to try and cover up the Bushiatler Administration's complete failure to address the core problems in American society that were only highlighted by the Hurricane Katrina, which in itself was caused by Global Warming.

I demand the immediate arrest and indictment of Bush, Cheney, and especially Karl Rove for their Crimes Against Humanity and all people of the world. How many more innocent people must die because of the Repuglican War Machine?!?!/1!?!?1/1/11one?!slash?!!

Yea, that's what people will do when no one is watching. We've lost, and I don't mean wasted, over $8 billion in reconstuction funds in Iraq because no one was paying attention to where that money went.

2006-02-15 11:59:34 AM
$10,000 misappropriated by civilians for porn and guns used by "liberal" media to distract discussion of massively mismanaged spending by incompetent FEMA management cronies in ...3...2...1...

2006-02-15 12:00:57 PM
I guess getting a tattoo is more important than using the money to feed your family.

2006-02-15 12:01:50 PM
How do you break people out of chains they build themselves? When they take the money you give them -money that's supposed to turn their lives back around- and fritter it away on porn and massages, is it any wonder they can't escape their situation?

This is why the standard check-in-the-mail form of welfare is so ineffective; it only helps the people who are poor only because of a remarkable but ultimately one-time setback. For those who have truly ingrained the patterns of failure into their lives and behavior, it does more harm than good by acting as an enabler. It may allow them to survive with their negative behavior patterns a bit longer, but can that really be called help?

How does one help such people? Surely there must be a better way than this.

2006-02-15 12:01:57 PM
Let's see. You have a bunch of people that have learned that no matter how badly they squander away their lives the government will step in an bail them out. You give them $2000 dollars on a frickin' debit card and expect them to spend it wisely?!?!?!

Way to expect accountablility there. Great use of the "Obvious" tag...

I <3 you.

This is where my donations went?

You'd be surprised at the waste. Volunteer regularly at the CAFB and you'd be farking shocked at the waste.

Like tons of water that was packaged in cans, then left in containers baking in the sun, then went "bad", so it was shipped back??! Something about the aluminum and lack of coatings.

A full shipping container, that was like 14 tons of water. In cans. Wasted.

Allot of people donated stuff that was needed, but not enough. Like adult and baby formula was scarce, but allot of tab-canned meals, lots of "staple" items. Mostly canned veggies which have a shelf-life of 2 years; it helped.

Allot of that food did help those that needed it, and yea they needed it.

2006-02-15 12:04:52 PM
Well, who wouldn't spend that money on porn, tattoos, and massages. At least I know that the Katrina victims will have some kind of happy ending.

2006-02-15 12:04:57 PM
People keep biatching about how much we are spending in Iraq. Why don't you look a little farther down the road. Think about how much we will now save when we get all the oil for free.

2006-02-15 12:05:32 PM
Hey! Where my check at?

2006-02-15 12:05:37 PM
Hurricane victims spent their my money on porn,
tattoos and massages.

Fixed that for ya.

2006-02-15 12:06:12 PM
That's right, use these examples to persecute everyone. Just like every other anecdotal dipshiat thing on fark. It's plays well in the sticks.
