good idea.

I'm not a big Olypics fan, but I like competition as long as no voting for the winner is done.

2006-02-10 3:34:48 PM
Being from the WSJ, I was expecting the primary arguement to be that there was no single corporation overseeing the Olympics and making huge profits from it - so it must be a waste of time.

2006-02-10 3:45:21 PM
I think the Olympics should be more like the originals, performed entirely naked and no safety equipment. It would make the winter Olympics especially interesting and humorous.

2006-02-10 3:51:35 PM
I must admit...I look back to those Olympic days of the 1970s with a great amount of fondness...ABC at that time knew how to cover the Olympics, and only they could because they also had "ABC Wide World of Sports." I remember watching the Innsbruck olympics in 76, and being totally taken away to another world. I suppose in some ways when the Olympics were in another country they seemed more exotic...

Now, on the other hand, I would agree that NBC has effectively ruined the Olympics, especially with the crappy Williams musical score and all the attention paid to the "personal" stories...cut the personal stories and give me more competition!

I must say, for an article from the WSJ opinion pages, that was thought-provoking and interesting. I was surprised to see that article not accuse the Olympics of being some commie-ACLU-liberal plot against good Christian God-fearing conservatives. You know, like every other WSJ editorial.

2006-02-10 6:06:01 PM
However, it was certainly interesting how the author just couldn't stay on topic. Kept taking jabs in his analogies.

Soccer hooliganism makes the Olympics look like child's play.

Actually, I thought he did a pretty good job covering the 2 man bobsled event in Brokeback Mountain.

Don't agree with him fully, but he does bring up some good points.

I'm confused. Why does China care about Katie Couric specifically?

2006-02-10 9:06:52 PM
Wait, you mean they just wasted an hour of time with the personal stories instead of showing me sports?

\really, if i wanted to know about their personal stories, i'd read a memoir of their lives
\\more skiing accidents, less about mothers and meeing up with random old olympians
\\\and slashies on the medal podium!!!

BTW - memo to the olympics & NBC: Just show them coming in, light the torch, and stfu!!!!!!

Winter olympics winter olympics... ahh I look forward to ahhh the 100m das.. ohh really??? Summer huh. Soccerrr football or whatever the world calls it... also summer. Does jamica sport a bob sled team this year? They do and they suck huh... Well I watch the Winter olympics for deep philosophical reasons. Like what?

Is it ok to fap to that ice skater... shes how old? 30... OMG! Just ewwww.. I mean ahhh.

Ok, so scandal and sensationalism apparently are good enough to put a stop to the Olympic games. Why stop there? Maybe the Superbowl could be cancelled solely due to the OJ Simpson trial.

We could do away with professional baseball after the Black Sox Scandal as well as what happened with Pete Rose.

We sure wouldn't let the NBA alone either. Just look at what happened with Kobe Bryant. Now that's a scandal worthy of bringing down a professional sports empire.

After all, its all about the prestige and not money. Right? Right?

2006-02-11 12:25:23 AM
someone needs to tell bob costas to stfu.

I think a little history is in order, first.

The classic Olympic Greek games began in 776 BC as a competition among amateur athletes from different city states to promote health, fairplay, community wellbeing and entertainment in an apolitical setting. But Slowly over the centuries subtle corruption, bribery, blackmail, political tampering, cheating, rank dishonesty and professionalism seeped into the Games, and in 394 AD they were abolished because they had become a parody of the amateur ideal, a focus of corruption and a source of heated political tension.

The modern Olympic Games were established in 1896 as a competition among amateur athletes from different nation states to promote health, fairplay, community wellbeing and entertainment in an apolitical setting.

What took the Greeks over a thousand years to do, we have done in less than one hundred. One thing the Greeks had no problems with, however, was the wholesale consumption of illicit substances for performance enhancement. So the Games aren't all that bad.

The Olympics is the reason Nancy Kerrigan got knee-capped--ok, so let's cancel parades, cuz that's what got Kennedy killed.

2006-02-11 12:34:45 PM
Lots of bashers here... but I happen to really enjoy the olympics. Yes, its scandal ridden, like every other sport out there.

But I'm just a fan of sports. There are a few events that are boring as hell; but most are pretty fun to watch. I just got done watching womens hockey - Sweden vs Russia, and I've got the US vs Switzerland on right now.

It just sucks that nobody is really paying attention this year. I guess because its not in the US, means that people here don't care. Plus NBC is covering horribly. Seriously a primetime replay show? Who cares? I already know who won. Show it to me live. Thank goodness I have have other means to watch the different events...

2006-02-11 12:50:19 PM
i agree w/ bailiff. i just a fan of sport and love watching competitions that i normally wouldn't see. of course, i wish all the bullshiat was left out. 2006 is a great sports year.

now - winter olympics
june - world cup

You're wrong. We went over all of this 2 years ago during the last summer game! NBC did get a clue and now broadcasts literally 24 hours a day on all of the networks. Virtually every competition can be viewed in its entirety. Sure, the primetime main channel may be heavy on cutting around to much and personal stories, but you can change to a different NBC channel and/or check the schedule to see when they'll be broadcasting your favorite sports.

You're wrong, too. Read my above post. Why is everyone bashing NBC? 24 hours a day on 4 channels. Basically every event is shown in its entirety. What more do you crybabies want???

There is a theme to this article that I see frequently: something exists to bring some good into the world but it's not perfect so we should get rid of it (this is the theme of the negative comments about The Nature Conservancy in the Bush public land sale thread). What kind of BS is that?

Is it better that as Americans we NEVER see people from other countries competing against us, and each other, because sometimes there is controversy in the Olympics? The writer of the article needs to get his head out of his ass and open his eyes. If he does not like the Olympics he should STFU and not watch them. I am sure he can find Golden Girls reruns on some channel.

2006-02-11 4:03:24 PM
Thing is though with the winter olympics (especially opening ceremonies) there's lot of loser countries entering 2 athletes. They should be banded under "miscellaneous"

Ireland has 4 winter Olympians, and none of them are short track speedskaters. That means if I get anywhere good enough at the sport I can go, plus there's a good chance everyone else will fall down and I'll win a medal like that Aussie guy in Salt Lake.

Please at least let the Olympics stick around long enough for me to realize that dream.

This is the Wall Street Journal Opinion Page. They're upset because nobody has declared a war on their version of "evil" or that the US is getting screwed by the French or that the NeoCon agenda is not moving forward fast enough.

Is anybody watching it right now. Nice call by the announcers in the cross-country skiing.

"He's tiring out"
"Look for the big guys coming from behind"
"He's in first, but it can't hold"
"Look for the guy in second to go blowing right by him"
"Well, he certainly is still holding the lead, but it can last"
"We're in the stadium now, and it's only a matter of seconds before the second place guy blows by him"
"Well, he just INCREASED his lead"
"He's going out to a BIGGER lead"
"He's won the GOLD! Who would have thought it?"

/Not you, obviously
//LOL at the stupid announcers

That's why the ABC coverage was so great. Jim McKay kept us aware of the big stories, while keeping it moving at a breakneck pace.

They were constantly saying "We're going over to Jill in ____ arena", etc.

/Maybe the Olympics weren't so scripted for tv back then and they had to do quick cuts to catch all the action???

Apparently you didn't RTFA, especially the last part about how any sporting competition that's more than just locally played or billed as for some greater cause necessarily results in being acting like this. Because the Olympics is necessarily defined this way, nationalism is the result.

Nice to see the WSJ's asshattery on the editorial page is all-encompassing, not just about politics and economics.

Some bad things happened there, so we shouldn't do it anymore? Sheesh.

Mr. Smith is a movie critic

This credential line should go atop the article as a disclaimer. Bleh.

2006-02-13 9:38:01 AM
Dear nerds and fatties Olympics haters:

Try sports yourself. Oh shiat, almost forgot, you already tried and sucked. Well, what a pity.

Concerning the article: the author is way off the facts.
Sports were re-introduced by German "Turnvater" Jahn, following the motto "mens sana in corpore sano". It's funny to see that his intention was to fight obesity and now his sports ideals are fought by obese suckers or nerds who couldn't even throw a ball straight.

The Olympics are not about World Peace. Given the fact that this is the author's first line, we can forget about the rest. He continues by summing up some controversial results about boycotts, yet what he does not understand, is the fact that the Games have survived all the political attacks and remained what they are: a sports event. For sportsmen. It was politicians who tried to instrumentalize them for their propaganda, like Hitler proving a superior race, same thing as the US and Soviet Union tried to do during the Cold War.

BTW, it's funny that for those who matter, the athletes, the Olympics are the greatest event to be. For them it's worth more than a World Chamionship, you gain some kind of immortality when you are an olympic champion. And I personally have exercised all my life and dreamed of getting there. I know what people have to go through to make it there and they have my deepest respect. I cheer for anyone who shows good sportsmanship and I don't farkin' care from which country he is. If he's a good winner, he wins double. And by that I mean the absence of arrogance. If a dutch speed skater beats my country girl: so what? She was happy, joyful. She was better and earned it. They respect each others performances and if they were better, well, then they should win. Performing in sports means to deal with defeats sometimes. It's good lesson for your life that teaches you to get up on your feet and try again.

The hostility that some countries feel against each other (besides the politically influenced one I mentioned above) usually comes from unfair results, and as one of these the author neatly tries to ignore the incident that took place in Salt Lake City in 2002, when the Korean short trakcer was tripped off his gold medal for dubious reasons. Apollo Anthon Ohno was promoted to first place and you might say that that was justice for the box fight in 1988. And here you go: in the long run these mistakes will equal out.

There's a lot more positive about the Olympics than the author has thought about in the rush he had when writing the article. It's a pity he didn't throw it where it belongs: in the olympic flame.

2006-02-13 9:53:29 AM
Never mind the politics, it should be cancelled because it's crap. Proper sports already have their own championships, so there's no need to tag them onto the Olympics as well. The Olympics just add disruption to their regular sporting calendar.

You're essentially left with track & field and swimming. There's nothing particularly exciting about watching one person run or swim slightly faster than someone else, or throw something a little bit further. Who cares apart from the contestants themselves and a few of their close relatives?

Purple_Jack: Never mind the politics, it should be cancelled because it's crap. Proper sports already have their own championships, so there's no need to tag them onto the Olympics as well. The Olympics just add disruption to their regular sporting calendar.

You obviously do not know much about atheletes then.

There are some sports which have their own royal event (football, cycling) that leaves the Games far behind, no doubt about that, but in almost every other olympic discipline it's the creme de la creme and an olympic title means double the world championship title. Every athlete exercises four years just to be there and the only ones who are disturbed in their annual schedules are some leagues like NHL or NBA who once were too snobby to send their players. Even they have changed their attitude. And if it's nothing special, then why do Americans still talk about the hockey team of 1980?

I doubt that all the functionaries in the IOC are saints, but once more: it's the athletes who count. All the bad things that happen at the olympics happen anywhere else as well. So I guess we should abolish all sports then?

Man, it's not losing that hurts. It's bad winners who suck.

Who cares apart from the contestants themselves and a few of their close relatives?

Those who are/were active in sports themselves, for example. For anybody else there's probably some Jerry Springer re-run for educational purposes. Ever heard of a remote control?

In these troubled times isn't watching great human achievment as valuable as ever. To remind us how great the human spirit can be and often times is. To watch dedicated athletes pursue goals they have trained their entire life for is inspiring often times.

Why does this author choose to look at the negative aspects of the Olympics? Oh cause he is in the media, i forgot. Why doesn't ever occur to him to make them better instead of get rid of them all together?

and the 1996 Games in Atlanta were playgrounds for terrorists.

Sure, one little pipe bomb goes off and suddenly it's a "playground for terrorists".
