Thank goodness I'm not the only one.

FFS - Top of the Pops at least has some great indie rock on it. This show will be all hip-hop and stupid pop.

Pops, Schmops, I want Honk Bag!

Also TotP also has a lot of live acts (and some accoustic variations)- my guess is the american version will be fully lip synced

I liked it the first time, when it was called:

It will focus on the top 20 of the billboard chart, eh?
Oooh, I can expect some fine music then. I'm setting my DVR right now!

I ask, no, demand that the first performance be of the all-time great classic of our time, K-Fed's Papayoyo or whatever the heck it is...

But the horror of that is by definition, pop is what sells. It has a large audience appeal.

Wasn't that originally called "Austin City Limits" and it was on PBS?

"The American version will be based on the top 20 of the U.S. Billboard charts."

I see failure already. The thing about these shows is that they're safe. John Peel (RIP) or Lester Bangs (RIP) could have been the only people who could pull off something like this and not bore the hell out of everyone. Though Peel did like to experiment on TOTP, people respected him for presenting bands that were off the radar. You won't see that here.

This will be another boring, stupid and unexperimental piece of shiat. Of course the idiots who BUY the crap on the Top 20 Billboard charts in the first place will squeal in glee nestled in their sofas.

/where's uncle floyd when we need him

"This is the next step up from American Idol", he says. fark you, Lou Perlman, whoever you are.

Honk Bag now!

"Up and coming" = whatever corporately produced shiat we're going to try to get you to buy next.

And can we please stop calling those marketing machines "bands?" For Christ's sake, at least Duran Duran played instruments. These pre-fab dance toys do not get to qualify for a band. Period.

Gov't Mule - that's a farking band.

The American version will be based on the top 20 of the U.S. Billboard charts.

This is all very good. I like Kelly Clarkson, Pussycat Dolls and Fallout Boy, but pop radio just doesn't play them enough.

Pearlman, a music producer who launched the careers of 'N Sync and the Backstreet Boys

And he is allowed to live?

2006-01-24 11:52:09 AM
Wasn't Solid Gold the same premise, but with Cashbox as the source instead of Billboard? And wasn't there at TV version of American Top 40 with Casey Kasem counting down the top ten or twenty? Someone help my faulty memory.

After some minimal research last night, I've discovered that VH1, the pop culture wasteland of American television, shows more music videos than MTV. According to their weekday schedules, MTV stops showing all videos by 10 AM every morning. By contrast, VH1 stops all their videos at 11 AM.

Coincidentall, cable channel FUSE shows videos almost non-stop, and it's programming very much resembles MTV from the late 80s. And still, no one actually watches that channel because, believe it or not, most people (including those that complain about there being no music videos on TV) don't actually like watching music videos! Film at 11.

2006-01-24 12:01:05 PM
What the hell? I would love a show like Top of the Pops. I video countdown show where the artists are actually perforing their songs live? Sign me the fark up!

2006-01-24 12:01:45 PM
Top of the Pops is completely redundant in a world with hundreds of 24 hour music channels.

I have fond memories of watching it as a kid, but it was never a great show and very rarely had a decent live performance.

If I still had the most indiscriminate, mainstream music taste of anyone in the world, then I might still be able to sit through an entire programme. But I don't.

Top of the Pops had Iron Maiden on it more than once, if I remember correctly.

I'm betting we get nothing of that calibur here in the US.

TOTP Has been moved from BCC1 to BBC2 because it was
nolonger popular. Its prime time slot on BBC1 was
axed. Now they sell the idea to the Yanks???????????

Dear UK:

Please be more selective in the television shows you export. What do I mean? Please consult this quick handy reference for a few examples:

Monty Python's Flying Circus, Fawlty Towers, The Goodies = good
Dancing with the Stars, Skating with Celebrities, Top of the Pops = spawn of Satan

Submitted for your consideration.

/dating myself, I know

The Manic Street Preachers killed on that show. Farking amazing peformance. I'm just amazed that anything off the Holy Bible would ever be played on TV.

BTW they still have Austin City Limits on PBS, new ones that is. Though I prefer the reruns of old ones. Saw the one from the 80's with Eric Johnson. Was moved.

Firebug

Yes, and they set the record for the most number of complaints from the public, bettering the record held by the Sex Pistols for about 17 years... (James was wearing a balaclava)

I prefered "Crop of the Flops"... the episode with musical guest "Adam and the Gnats".

OMFG, it is truly the holy grail of shiat. I wouldn't watch that garbage to save my grandmother from the rat torture in 1984.

If anyone hasn't seen TOTP you can see what it is like on their website. They've uploaded the last couple of weeks online... www.bbc.co.uk/totp (pops)

/not as good as it used to be.
