Important: You MUST be the photographer of the photos you submit.

Ideally, your photograph should be presented as taken, with as little alteration in Photoshop or other image editing programs as possible. Please refer to submission rules

Only 3 photo submissions allowed. For voting purposes, please place each photo into a separate post.

Legal: All photographers submitting photos to this contest are the legal copyright holders for the photos submitted and the photos are not to be considered free for any other use without written consent from the submitting photographers.

This Weeks Theme: "Black and White Photography"

Description:
"Your favourite people, places and things, in grayscale

(This can be scanned film, shot in b&w digital or converted to grayscale in PhotoShop or other image processing software)"

To have your photo website listed on the Farktography home page, please send your fark username and url to farktography(at)undergroundbastard.com and we'll get you up forthwith.

Image hosting sites can be found here:

To ensure that each photograph looks as good as it should, please adjust your contrast and brightness
so that each of the following shades of gray are distinct from one another and that the transition
from black to white is evenly paced. If you can't do so, you may lose some shadow and highlight detail.

From an old Cavin and Hobbes: Calvin and Dad

C: Dad, how come old photographs are always black and white? Didn't they have color film back then?
D: Sure they did. In fact, those old photographs ARE in color. It's just the WORLD was black and white then.

C: Really?
D: Yep. The world didn't turn color until sometime in the 1930s, and it was pretty grainy color for a while, too.

C: That's really weird.
D: Well, truth is stranger than fiction.

C: But then why are old PAINTINGS in color?! If the world was black and white, wouldn't artists have painted it that way?
D: Not necessarily. A lot of great artists were insane.

C: But... but how could they have painted in color anyway? Wouldn't their paints have been shades of gray back then?
D: Of course, but they turned colors like everything else in the '30s.

C: So why didn't old black and white photos turn color too?
D: Because they were color pictures of black and white, remember?

I just want to say, you folks blow my mind. There have been a lot of examples of excellent composition, excellent use of shadow, and excellent use of texture in this thread. There are so many great pictures here that I can't remember ever voting for so many in a single thread.

Keep up the good work! :D

I love to photograph here. It's the Rose Garden in Thomasville, GA. Part of it is a Rose Garden, the other part is this big pond that has some great scenery. I've had many a good time there whether it be with someone else (in the back seat of my car) or by myself.

In 1976, I submitted 6 pictures, all b&w, to the USAF photo contest. Those 6 won me 3 1st places, 2 2nd places, 1 3rd place and I also won the best in show, for the CONUS. I also once personally met Ansel Adams in Austin, TX at a galley opening.

What I am leading to is that, this is, by far, the finest collection of B&W art that I have been priviledged to see in over 20 years. I am also sure Ansel is somewhere up there smiling.

I put the camera down many years ago, but you guys have inspired me to pick up that old Pentax Spotmatic that I know is stuffed away somewhere in the attic.

Thank you all for the priviledge and the inspiration.

who made you the supreme authority on acceptable photography (and acceptable forms of art)?

remember, this is a farktography thread, not an art exhibition. if people have some photos that they particularly enjoy, why not let them share those photos with everyone? if someone posts up a picture they like, chances are, there will probably be someone else out there who will like it as well. so what's the problem with letting people enjoy other people's pictures? photography is a democratizing medium and, speaking as a visual arts student myself, i think that's a good thing.

and your paintbrush comment is just stupid. whatever semblance of credibility you had left as an "art authority" disappeared with that comment. i'm not saying that all of these photos should be considered art, but there is much more to art than your narrow, ignorant view of it.

so in short, get off your high horse, asshole.

This will go down as the first thread Bevets posted in that DOESN'T include one of his religious rants or Bible quotes.

BTW, nice work, everybody!

"cowardm

Nice Les Paul (I think, hard to tell from the angle.) Great photo as well." (sorry guys, I don't know how to do italics, and I looked in what little time I have before class, I'll figure it out later)

Thanks Demise, it's an Epiphone Les Paul Custom (a higher end model). I've put a Gibson 500T pickup in it (also in Gibson Xplorers and LP Classics) and Sperzel locking tuners. It is my pride and joy.
