veruca, cool waterfall, where is it?

It's about 45 minutes east of Portland along I-84, maybe less. It's a huge tourist attraction and very worth a visit, especially in the winter when it freezes over.

Charleston, S.C., right? Everytime they take out another one of these cantilevers it irks me a little, if only because they have a very appealing shape compared to the bridges they are often replaced with these days, those darn curved-girder glorified highway overpasses and the (imo) tacky and trendish cable-stayed bridges, because of the lowered costs of contruction and maint.

i wish i had a shot of the brooklyn bridge at night from the river cafe..there's nothing more awesome than the sight of that bridge and the sky line over the water. it's awesome.

i wish I had a scanner too because i have a cooool picture of 7 bridges in amsterdam. We were on a night tour through the canals and they were all lit up. Very cool :)

These are some great pictures. The guy with the guitar bridge was quite clever, and being a guitarist I enjoyed it.

Yep. I was at work and realized they were about to blow it so I leaned against my office window and waited for it to go. This was the second span they blew up. I didn't feel it near as much as the first, but they said this was a bigger explosion.

theprecambrian and others: how do you do the effect where the water is blurred (to simulate it running), but the rest of the image is stationary? I assume it was with a tripod and slow shutter speed, but how slow exactly? All my 1-second plus shots [taken during daytime] are just white pictures, because of too much light to the shutter.

(I'm a photography nerd, but I've got a lot to learn.)

2005-11-24 1:50:45 AM
lorcani, one way is to use a very slow ISO speed film or a very small aperture, but more often one uses a neutral density (ND) filter which darkens the image so you need to reduce shutter speeds to get a blur, but won't blow out the image. I've used 2-stop ND filters for this.

I didn't have time to prep for this one. But I do have this picture from August. I stopped here with my bf for a quickie. And then took a picture. Because that's what I do.

idle_hands: congratulations veruca! :o)

Thanks ya'll...I'm totally humbled. There were so many gorgeous entries, and all of you amaze and inspire me every single week.

kcg795: The Astoria Megler Bridge.

I was waiting for someone to submit that bridge. It scares me every single time I cross it because it never seems to end.

rickythepenguin: Nice DOF on the guitar pic, Veruca. (not to mention a smart twist on the theme!)

Sorry I missed your comment last night (crappy borrowed connection) but thank you very much.

See everyone next week...

Yeah. Looks like I was too late posting it too. I registered and had to wait 24 hours. Then it was too late. Oh well.

I'm in Skamokawa, Washington and I cross that bridge once and a great while. It can be quite an animal to cross on a windy day.

Loved your incomplete bridge Ijustworkhere.
While simplistic in composition and bland in colour, it's still the most striking of the whole competition regardless.
Well done.
