Nobody can be that stupid.

I don't know, the guy seems harmless. Come on, he can't cut black folks hair. It IS different. I can see why people would be upset, it looks bad, but he's just trying to avoid the hassle.

He even says when someone of the african persuasian does come in, he sends them to his buddy across the street that CAN cut their hair correctly.

Yeesh, PC much?

There's better wording the guy could've used, definitely. I can't think what would be better, without getting very wordy, however.

Buckshot: he's just trying to avoid the hassle.

I wonder why a barber that age never learned how to cut a black person's hair. Doesn't look like a beginner to me.

2005-10-24 9:56:28 AM
Fishy. I thought black hair was the easiest to cut.

Buckshot: Yeesh, PC much?

Nah. I applaud his honesty. But I'm wondering if he realizes that his shop is in a neighborhood that's probably 60% black.

Ooops. bwahahahaha. Maybe he should just elarn how to cut black people's hair. duh.

Well, possibly, but is that racist? If I want to be a barber, and just go, you know, I don't want to cut black people's hair, just white's?

Does that make me racist? What if he just never got the training? He looks old enough that it's possible the opportunity never prevented itself when he was going through training. White folks cut white folks hair, black folks cut black folks hair. Maybe that was just how they rolled back in his day.

The wording on the sign sucks. Absolutely. But I don't see this as racist, nor do I see it as racist if he doesn't have the skill. Like he said, he's always happy to send them across the street so they get a good haircut anyway from someone with the right skills.

2005-10-24 9:59:09 AM
Yeah I think it would have been less offensive if the sign said:

"Bob's Barber shoppe: We don't do negroes"

2005-10-24 9:59:53 AM
Get sued for this or get sued for cutting a patch on a guy's head...

Decisions, decisions...

2005-10-24 10:00:56 AM
Just put this in perspective with the salons that do only black hair.

Alice

You get that common sense out of here.

Things are only racist when white people do them.

2005-10-24 10:01:45 AM
He'd get more business if he just learned how to cut everyone's hair. *shrug* I guess that's the perspective I'm trying to see this from: business. I'm not sure why someone would refuse to take the time (really, could it take longer than one day of parctice down at the local cosmetology school?) to learn how to cut hair that is slightly different than the hair he already knows how to cut. Surely it would be worth the money?

Buckshot: Well, possibly, but is that racist?

Maybe not. I don't know the man.

My barber only cuts blonde hair.

/lousy redheads, go somewhere else freaks!

2005-10-24 10:02:41 AM
Just damn.

A little honesty in this day and age gets you branded a racist...

mr_bunny: /lousy redheads, go somewhere else freaks!

It's a well-known fact that redheads' hair makes scissors rust

2005-10-24 10:03:18 AM
Either this is an innocent old man who truly doesn't see the harm in the sign.

Or it's a racist old man who doesn't like black people.

I suspect only he and some of his closets customers know the truth.

2005-10-24 10:03:21 AM
Guess there's no Asian folks down there, either.

/that TV station news page has a top-level navigational link for fishin'. Wow.

I just can't stop giggling about it. I figure dude probably has no nefarious intentions, but, man, he totally flaked on the sign. "whites only?" hehe. It's really funny.

2005-10-24 10:05:14 AM
i think this is funny as hell

AliceInWonderland: Just put this in perspective with the salons that do only black hair.

I thought about that. But I've never been to any black barbershop in Louisiana that the barber/stylist didn't know how to do hair of a certain type. If I'm correct, it's required to finish barber training/school, which is a requirement to get a license.

Typically, it's not that a barber doesn't know how to do a particular type of hair but a barbershop's location usually dictates the color of his clients.

2005-10-24 10:06:37 AM
hehe. I just read the article, finally. I think it's pretty cool that he sends people across the street to another barber who does know how to cut black hair. Those two guys should team up and open up a single shop.

2005-10-24 10:06:47 AM
I hear this guy is gonna co-star opposite Ice Cube in the next Barbershop sequel. It's all a big publicity stunt.

Yeah! White people get blamed for everything! Wah! Waaah!! Stop blaming us for the world's problems!!

You get that common sense out of here!

/Has never seen a "Black Only" hair place... not even in that stupid "Barbershop: The Female Version" movie.

Heh, Stacey Campfield faced a similar situation.

What a country!!

Stupid? Definitely.

2005-10-24 10:11:18 AM
I, too, have never seen a sign similar to "Blacks Only." Have I seen shops that appear to serve mainly black customers? Absolutely. I bet I could walk in there and get a decent cut, though.

my anecdotal two cents

2005-10-24 10:11:22 AM
it does seem like bad wording, definitely. and inflammatory. I doubt this barber didn't know the can of worms he was opening.

here in my neighborhood there is an old-time barbershop (hint: the owner's name is "Razor Roy"). there are three barbers there and none of them cut "woman's hair". there is no sign on the door, I found out when I went there and all three barbers declined (politely) to cut my hair. at the time, I had short hair...
I thought it was funny, so I left it at that. the youngest of the barbers looked to be ~60 years old.

2005-10-24 10:11:47 AM
I can see where he'd be sending them to someone else, if it's job-realted, which this is. It's nothing more than the fact that he would do a lousy job. I can handle that.

The sign, though? I'm amazed that at no time during the making of that sign did he stop and realize "Wait. What the fark am I writing?"

ahh...forget it!

Racist?

I went to those Klan meetings to find new network clients!

2005-10-24 10:16:31 AM
By the way, no one has called this guy a racist yet. I seriously doubt he is, he just didn't think it through, obviously.

True, there is no salons hanging out signs saying "Blacks Only". But I think if I walked into a salon advertising braiding and relaxing as their main services and asked in my best trixie voice for highlights I may be refered to another salon.

This guy definatly has some cajones hanging a sign saying "Whites Only".

binnster: I don't think he's very clever - he's got an "S" on backwards.

No no, he did that on purpose - like the "R" in "Toys 'R' Us"

2005-10-24 10:19:13 AM
I went to a "black" salon when my homemade dreads weren't working out. They put some stuff in my hair, twisted my fakey little dreads and told me to wash it in a week. The stuff they used turned rancid after like 3 days and I decided dreads weren't for me.

2005-10-24 10:20:21 AM
What's so strange is that I could imagine a younger person making sucha faux pas, as that person wouldn't really be aware of how heavy the term "whites only" is. A younger person might think, "well, I only know how to cut white people's hair so..." But this guy is old enough that he was around when people had actual "whites only" signs on their businesses indicating that blacks were not fit to be served there. Idjit.

Yeah, and if I walked into a bakery for a black and white cookie, they'd deny me for wanting delicious interracial baked goods.

Hypotheticals are fun! Lets think of some more!

If he wants to restrict his clientele, so be it.... I've always thought that market pressures are the surest way to overcome racism.

I don't think the point is wether he is ACTUALLY a racist or not. It sounds like he probably isn't. The point is you just can't put a sign up that says "Whites Only" anymore. Is that so fcuking hard everyone? Do we really need to play the "god everyone is so politically correct!" card right now? It was a stupid thing to do, whatever his reason.

How is that trolling? You put yourself in a hypothetical situation and assumed an outcome to make a point.
