the shot of the brewery - did you do a big levels adjustment to get it to pop like that?

Thanks for the props, monkeybort. The sun was shining pretty hard, which made it fairly easy. I got a little more out of the reds by tweaking the curve a touch.

That SD pic had some intense geometry in it - were you tempted to crop off a little of the left side? Also, if you don't mind my impertinence, what kind of lens did you use on the Driggs shot? Together with the perfect exposure on the clouds, it gave the shot such an intense otherworldly feel.

Hey, folks, I should've shouted this out earlier, but what do you all think of having a special thread 8:00 pm Thursday dedicated to future themes. We could vote on them and then create a schedule for future contests.

Assuming this doesn't violate any thread rules/etiquette, please vote on this (or not) to show your support (or lack thereof).

Also, we should give a warm round of applause to CuddleButt, Idle_hands, Protex and the other cool folks that have gotten this thing of ours off the ground and in the air.

thanks! it is tempting to crop, but i like to shoot (and post!!) full frame as much as i can. holdover from my very first photo class, i think. all three of those were shot with a canon 17-35 mm 2.8 on a 20D body, which translates to about a 27-56 mm with the allowance for the sensor.

i need to play with curves more, lately i've been tweaking the levels on stuff to really blast out the highlights and boost the intensity of the remaining colors. it works really well with some stuff, not so much with others.

In your last entry, is that one of the Twin Towers behind the building?

Jack107s,

Alas, I'm not sure what that building is - any Manhattan farkers out there? It was taken on (I believe) the southern end of Central Park - during that Christo/Home Depot promo-thingy a while back.

i need to play with curves more, lately i've been tweaking the levels on stuff to really blast out the highlights and boost the intensity of the remaining colors. it works really well with some stuff, not so much with others.

monkeybort
When you get a chance to explore curves, I think you'll find that they work very nicely with the expertise you're gaining in levels. When you're tweaking the levels, just take a look at the curves of the histogram you're modifying and imagine being able to change the height of those curves as well, not just their horizontal distribution. I think you'll find you can boost the intensity of different colors all at once.

Try selecting three important colors with the eye-dropper in a given photo, then sliding those points up or down - strictly vertical - ideally in an s-curve - to see how much control you now have over those colors. I love your photography already and can't wait to see what you come up with once you've become at one with this type of manipulation.

I took a friend's 20D down to Texas last year and fell in love with it. I picked up a D30 and love it even more - besides the resolution, it also has virtually no latency, so it effectively is instant-on. No firewire capability, however. :-{

Thanks for listenin'.

Weird partially built house outside yellowstone. The story goes that some crazy guy was building it (single handed) from "recycled lumber" whatever that means, & got this far before falling to his death while working on it.

They say that they left it this way in memorial to him, but I'm thinking nobody wanted to finish it, its weird lookin.. and BIG.

Anyway no voting because the picture was awful & I had to photoshop the contrast & brightness to make the house visible (darn sun wouldnt get outta the way)
