No... That can't be right. It was all over CNN. They had some Doctor crying about it. They wouldn't report something that they couldn't confirm, would they?

2005-09-26 7:33:24 AM
There ought to be some sort of rules for repeating what you heard said!

/excited utterance

As they point out:
20,000 people, several hundred journalists, ten highly visible bodies. If 1% of those people see a body (and it's likely to have been more than that, given the position of the bodies on the plaza outside) that's 200 reports of 10 bodies. Minor differences between their stories, plus an understandable air of panic and desperation, and it's not hard to see how this could arise.

Rubbish yes, meejah conspiracy (as has been suggested here and elsewhere) ? I have my doubts.

Orleans Parish District Attorney Eddie Jordan said authorities had confirmed only four murders in New Orleans in the aftermath of Katrina - making it a typical week in a city that anticipated more than 200 homicides this year.

That's fairly chilling in itself. 17 murders per 100,000 - nearly thrice the rate in most US cities ??

If 99 % were behaving, that means there were 400 criminal manics on the loose.

/glad i wasn't there

One thing I find bizarre is that the head of the PD's SWAT team was on TV a number of times discussing how his folks had to regularly storm a blackened convention center to take shooters out by the light of their muzzle flashes. If that was BS then where are the SWAT team cops denying it?

2005-09-26 8:31:49 AM
flaEsq: If that was BS then where are the SWAT team cops denying it?

Nevermind, the denial is right in the article, which raises more important questions about the qualifications and credibility of the bozo in charge of their SWAT.

2005-09-26 8:38:34 AM
The pictures of two of the bodies that CNN had did not look like "natural causes", unless having your head beaten to a pulp is natural. That could have been post-mortem, though, which is horrific enough in its own right.

Oh, now you're just being silly! Assuming that locals would take the brunt of the murder rate? Pfft.

"I think 99 percent of it is bulls---," said Sgt. 1st Class Jason Lachney, who played a key role in security and humanitarian work inside the Dome. "Don't get me wrong, bad things happened, but I didn't see any killing and raping and cutting of throats or anything. ... Ninety-nine percent of the people in the Dome were very well-behaved."

Teh GASPE!

Maybe everybody just witnessed the same raping? (and nobody stopped it)

Really people, it was as bad as people say it was. My wife and I personally know people who could testify to the raping of little girls in the restrooms, the stabbings, the lack of help from the few cops/nurses that were there.

The moment that place was opened up as a shelter with only NOPD in place and no major national guard unit there to help....all hell was bound to break loose.

To understand what happened that week after Katrina, you really need to understand the city of New Orleans. All the crap that happened at the Superdome and Convention Center is just indicative of the city's problems as a whole, but when you encase that high poverty level in one or two buildings without adequate protection for the civilians who don't carry guns (about 98%)...the 2% of criminals will tear them apart.

2005-09-26 10:27:46 AM
*waves hand*

Yes, none of those bad things really happened.

Your government officials handled the Katrina like seasoned vets.

What? You mean black people wern't behaving like animals? preposterous!

And to suggest that police from neighboring cities had no reason to keep starving, sick evacuees out of their cities at gunpoint, why, you must just hate America!

/sarcasm.

This is why I love the fark shiat coont biatch filter. 'Cause it gives those rare headlines that past muster that little extra "oomph."

Yeah. because the survivors ate the rest.

My wife and I personally know people who could testify to the raping of little girls in the restrooms, the stabbings, the lack of help from the few cops/nurses that were there.

So you know someone who says they saw it happen?

Ummm...that's what this story's about. A bunch of people who said they saw stuff happen - only there's no evidence the things actually happened.

You present us with the parents of the little girl who was raped, and the story may have some credence. I'm pretty sure they'd have surfaced by now.

I just got back from helping relocate refugees that were shipped here from Houston.
After talking to one lady and her three kids who were in the Superdome, I think that 99% is way off.
She said the army guys were shooting at people to keep order. And the rest of the stuff was going on...
99% true maybe.

The mainstream media exaggerated bad news to get viewers and to sell papers?!

The devil, you say!

The poster is obviously some sort of rightwing extremist who probably voted for Bush.

The mainstream media always reports the facts, free of all spin. They promote NO political agenda - that would be a violation of journalistic ethics.

Are done with that photo yet dittybopper?

2005-09-26 10:52:16 AM
Doesn't this happen with every negative event though. The media always has to trump things up to get viewers then it's always... well, instead of the 1 billion reported dead there were only 2, etc.

But something you're doing RIGHT NOW could kill you. Find out at 10pm

Well, considering the lower amount of deaths, it's good news. But, considering the lower amount of deaths, NO residents are lying sacks of shiat. OR is that the media? When did mainstream news get taken over by the Enquirer?

The mainstream media exaggerated bad news to get viewers and to sell papers?!

No, dumbass - the media reported what people were saying.

the people lied, not the media.

This is the part of the show where everyone who demanded to know "what's going on, right now, give us any report you can" now hypocritically turns around and says "the media should have looked at every single element of every story and confirmed absolutely everything before reporting it."

Every one of those reports said "we have reports, unconfirmed, of..." That's exactly what people want to hear. If you don't know how to watch a newscast critically, throw your TV away.

HA! I was waiting for that one.

You present us with the parents of the little girl who was raped, and the story may have some credence. I'm pretty sure they'd have surfaced by now.

Good point; I would think that if rapes were occurring at the rate alluded to in people's statements, then we would have heard of at lease ONE confirmed case by now (even amidst the chaos). I'm not saying that nothing happened inside the Dome/Convention Center, but the hard evidence of crimes committed hasn't been found.

2005-09-26 10:57:18 AM
Strange. I never heard these high body count stories.

I did hear of the rapes in the bathroom/kids room/whatever it was.

I'm not surprised that there are hysterical reports in such a situation. Much like the "shootings of rescuers" was greatly exaggerated. None were ever hit (excepting the cop shot in the head at the looting, iirc).

"Everything was embellished, everything was exaggerated," said Deputy Police Superintendent Warren Riley. "If one guy said he saw six bodies, then another guy the same six, and another guy saw them - then that became 18."

The same effect was observed during World War 2 when air forces counted up kills. Statistics say USAAF gunners on bombers shot down the entire Luftwaffe every time they flew over Germany. In reality a dozen gunners shot at an enemy fighter which emitted a puff of smoke from the exhaust ports as the pilot jammed the throttle forward and dove away, and each of the dozen gunners said he personally shot down a fighter which was observed to crash in flames. Score a dozen kills. Meanwhile the ground crews buff out the scratches in the fighter's armor plate and send it up the next day.

battl_web17: "Really people, it was as bad as people say it was. My wife and I personally know people who could testify to the raping of little girls in the restrooms, the stabbings, the lack of help from the few cops/nurses that were there."

Really?? And what did you do to stop it? Did you file a report with the police? Give a description? Come on!! The Bash Bush With Katrina Fest ended about three days after Katrina left town. Once the people WHO WERE REALLY THERE started talking, the truth came out. That is the trouble with this whole disaster. Some less than honorable people saw an opportunity to use the deaths of victims of the hurricane and it's aftermath, to malign the Federal government and the Bush Administration. In reality, the Federal response was quicker and better than after Andrew in FL a few years ago. Better and quicker than after Hugo in SC.
Some lowlifes will stop at nothing, stoop to any level to throw mud at someone and I submit that by repeating the kind of comments makes battl_web17 one of them.

Gee, I guess all the republicans who were referring to the people of NOLA as "animals" really were racist shiatheads, just as I said.
