I believe Darius uses lens filters on his camera, not photoshop to achieve his affects. He can correct me if I am wrong, but he has several photographs he's done like that

hate to be a hater, but from my experience as a professional graphic designer and amateur photographer, there is no way darius' photo effect was achieved with lenses, and is definitely "shopped".

look at the left shoulder of the girl in front of the girl with the design on the back of her tee. the pixellation there suggests the hue/saturation effect took the shadow of her shirt as another color than red, and desaturated it.

simple effect - just view the "full sized" one in his flicker album. take any image, hit ctrl+u, then desaturate every color except one.

still a neat photo though.....

Being a photographer, I'd like to know what filter (manufacturer & name) and film your using to get such a desaturation of all colors but red on red items. Even in an interior shot with your flash executing and cool flourecent lighting I'd be curious what gets such a percise isolation.

ch4r7ie: he has a digital camera with some electronic filters,

Are they made by Adobe? Would such a thing even exist? Red is present in a lot of the light as a part of the scene. An "electronic filter" would have to mask like photoshop does to select certain areas over others that didn't have the same 'concentration'. Its a cool technique when done on the right subject. I personally don't care that its a manipulation, but not to offend the guy its not even that clear what's going on in the picture anyway.

Wage/dubsy - That particular filter is meant to simulate film with only red grains. There was a photographer in 60's who made a lot of pictures like that, but I can't remember his name, it would be b/w's of children kissing, with only the green grass behind showing and other similar things. Click through and check out my flikr page for some other stuff I've done with those filters. As for the event? I thought it was obvious because it was all Fark people in the picture ;) Either way, I'm not really "in it to win it" just wanted to show what I thought was a cool picture. I'd actually prefer zero votes, but a hundred style comments on my flikr page. And just a warning, I got one more with that effect I'm using next week too.

There have probably been a few. I believe its done by hand tinting the black and white negative. Regardless - is this a physical piece of equipment? If so, whats the brand. (I'd be curious if cuch a thing can be done without software in a digital camera - no offense but I don't believe its not selections, etc in photoshop).

Its a really cool technique though in any event. I was trying it with some of my Canada day pics (eliminate all colours but red in a crowd of ~200,000 but I ran out of patience).

Electronicly, it's a band-pass filter. You've heard of Infrared film? X-ray film? Due to the band pass filter, only the 650-700nm range is passed through the filter. I can draw you the schematic if you need to solder one up.

How adjustable is it? Sounds pretty cool - does it involve much work?

I know this is going to drive you nuts, but wouldn't reflecting everything not in the 650 to 700 nanometer range cause your photo to be really dark? You are blocking the other colors, and white light is composed of a mixture of the visible spectrum. So wouldn't you be having a hard time taking a picture of anything that isn't red?

Lemmi you are correct, which is why this filter similtaneously exposes a b/w shot and "prints" them both on the same file.

Wage it's built in to my camera. There are probably like 12 different filters on mine, but this one particular one has 3 settings. One at 440-480nm (blue), one at 510-550nm (green), and the red one already mentioned. If you go to my flikr page, you can see that I use those a whole bunch, and you can also access the exif data for my shots which will tell you my camera model and the particular settings for that shot.

Ah, ok. So the camera takes two pictures at the same time, one in grayscale and the other only lets in the red parts. Then, the camera splices them together. That makes sense then. Pretty cool feature... I wonder if my camera can do stuff like that?

Ok... I see what you mean now DariusMDeV. Looked at a review of the camera and it explained it better. The way you were talking up there it sounded like some home grown thing.
