Amid the sympathy, however, there was criticism.

As U.S. military engineers struggled to shore up breached levees, experts in the Netherlands expressed surprise that New Orleans' flood systems failed to restrain the raging waters.

With half of the country's population of 16 million living below sea level, the Netherlands prepared for a "perfect storm" soon after floods in 1953 killed 2,000 people. The nation installed massive hydraulic sea walls.

"I don't want to sound overly critical, but it's hard to imagine that (the damage caused by Katrina) could happen in a Western country," said Ted Sluijter, spokesman for the park where the sea walls are exhibited. "It seemed like plans for protection and evacuation weren't really in place, and once it happened, the coordination was on loose hinges."

People need to recognize the priorities of the US government and the US people have become totally disconnected. They'd rather go to war (and have been doing so for decades) and fight some potential threat than protect our people from a certain threat. It makes me sick to consider the financial stupidity of spending trillions of dollars to "defend" the homeland with weapons and refuse to pay one thousandth of that cost to protect one of the largest cities in America.

I just had a big argument with a guy from Saint Peterburg who insists that flooding 20 feet deep happens "all the time" in Saint Peterburg, and that what happened to New Orleans "is no big deal".

Must... deal... with... fist.... of.... death....

Islamic extremists rejoiced in America's misfortune, giving the storm a military rank and declaring in Internet chatter that "Private" Katrina had joined the global jihad, or holy war. With "God's help," they declared, oil prices would hit $100 a barrel this year.

Islam is the religion of peace.

Islam is the religion of peace.

Just as Christianity is the religion of tolerance, then. Don't let a few extremists slur an entire religion.

Hey Powerslacker,

You know, I don't know about this doctrine of assassination, but if he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it. It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war. (Pat Robertson - RE: Hugo Chavez)

Christianity's a peaceful religion too.

See how easy it is to take the words of one small nutjob segment of a group and incorrectly attribute their views to the larger whole?

Yes, yes you do look stupid. It's OK.

Well, at least they have a viable strategy now. Massive incurred war debt followed by economic terrorism in the energy sector. That would work... Is working.

I would expect the pipelines to come under increasing attack.

"It appears that the money has been moved in the President's budget to handle homeland security and the war in Iraq, and I suppose thats the price we pay. What has happened in New Orleans is a terrible tradgedy; lives have been lost, survivors have lost all their possessions, there's looting, people are missing and it will take years for the area to recover.

I find the reference to Poland in the headline offensive, flippant and not in the slighest humorous.

There are no '"religions of peace" Most of the major organized religions suck and are outdated, they were designed by the men in power at the time of their creation to control and pacify the masses.
