Yeah, I'm kinda surprised they passed that.

...and really the price they're paying is *nothing* to what it is in parts of California.

Gas is around $2.60 for regular in Massachusetts, only 200 miles from the Refinery State. Hawaii may be deluding itself.

The law doesn't put a cap on retail prices.

We're up around 2.70-2.80 regular last I checked my local station. Some of the highest without the higher taxations some states impose.

But Oregon is unique. We have 1 pipeline coming down from tanker/refined oil in Seattle. We are not part of the national grid. We have one vein. PEAK Oil is getting wide local publicity here.

Nichole, you and I are in the same boat. Seattle's not connected to the National grid either..everything Washington gets is tankered in, just like us. All of ours comes from Puget Sound too.

GaryPDX: Yeah, it farking stinks. I just recently moved back home to Bellingham and it's higher than Seattle by 5-10 cents a gallon. Makes me want to drive to Lynnwood for some decent priced gas. Almost.

The state Public Utilities Commission is setting the wholesale price ceiling for gasoline in Honolulu at just under $2.16 a gallon.

With taxes, the wholesale price would be $2.74.

Hmmm. No talk of capping the taxes, I see.

Gee, at 15 gallons of gas per fillup (say), you're paying a whopping $0.75 to $1.50. How often do you fill up, once a week?

How do you EVER stay out of poverty?

Saw premium in eastern CA for $3.14.. of course we pay more in CA because it's a special formulation that sucks extra hard. But I'm not really quaking in my boots from fear. And I'm a student, for god's sake!

I was seeing that too. 1997 here. 99 cents in Bellevue (well, okay, 89 if you went to ARCO and used their shiat).

Looked at an oil price chart 2 days ago, it seems there was a huge drop in prices in 97, so it was sorta an anomoly, even for the 90's.

It's 1.119 per litre here in Nova Scotia.

Which at today's exchanges, comes to aboot 3.59 US per gallon.

I hate to trot this one out again, but in real terms (meaning adjusted for inflation), the price of gasoline is not all that high compared to the early eighties.

Except that chart does not reflect current prices. As in, it's currently nearing $3.00 a gallon in current dollars, whereas the graph stops at about $1.75 Good luck finding it for that amount.

Legislation in the face of reality. This is the state where the the bureaucratic hassles for environmental approval to open a junkyard were so great that Maui didn't have any for a while. There was no legal way to dispose of a dead car. Fortunately the cars on the island obeyed the will of the government and refused to die. There were rumors of thousands of cars abandoned along the side of the road, in the jungle, and elsewhere, but surely that was just rumor because if true it would mean that people were letting reality take precedence over the law.

Here in San Diego, where the gas stations have been raping us for years, I still see $2.69 at three stations by my house. I guess the rest of you finally caught up--we've been paying prices like this since last year.

Remember, the local gas station franchise owner isn't making money off of the gas he's selling at the pump, he's making his money off of the shiatty little convenience store. If you really want to hurt the gas companies, stop buying the 86oz. super gulp of Mountain Dew, and skip the Doritos. The franchise owner will start squealing to his higherups faster than you can spit. Chevron could give a rat's ass about Joe Consumer, but they'll listen to Patel the Franchisee.

OK, basic economics:

If you set the price of something below market levels, you will soon have none of that thing left. (See price caps under Nixon administration, rent control, the California energy crisis, the stampedes for $50 laptops two weeks ago in Richmond, gas shortages in China due to artificially low prices, all those stampedes of fat women for 75% off bridal dresses, etc. etc.). Which you may have noticed the LAST FARKING TIME YOU TRIED TO GET SOMETHING FOR NOTHING.

Enjoy the 10-block lines for gas, farktards. You voted for it.

I don't understand why they are complaining about Hawaii's gas prices being higher than mainland prices- except an exclusion for California since the "average" in CA is not higher than Hawaii. When I check gasbuddy, Oahu prices are lower than many many parts of the mainland- and they are paying the same as I do in bfe VA. (I know prices on the other islands are much higher, but I imagine there are not nearly as many drivers as the one million plus on Oahu)

GaryPDX, I always thought Oregon had higher prices because of the weird law that you couldn't pump your own gas.

It's 2.70-2.85 here in Juneau, AK. Premium (yeah, I are smart for owning a Premium-only car) has poked above 3.00 several times this quarter.

i am just curious when the end will be.. what the end result will be..what new technologies will show up that are viable and then stolen and regulated by the government.. etc.

Hawaii resident here

#1 the price cap is flexible and will go up and down based on the the average prices in three or four fixed locations across the country.

#2 this law is the result of years of lawsuits where the local refinery (we only have one) has been proven to have engaged in price gouging.

#3 it is intended to prevent the "magic floating gas price" effect where prices go up with the rest of the country but do not go back down when prices drop on the mainland.

#4 its an experiment, you can say its dumb or not in a year or two when we have some results to see if it works.

I'm sorry, gas prices generally do not "go back down". Whoever told you they did were mistaken. The article lists hawaii prices as being within a dime or so of the prices here in south florida. Given the expense of getting stuff out to your little island, I'm not all that supprised that it's a whole dime or so higher in cost.

right now is kind of unusual because gas prices have shot up everywhere, and fast. At the gas station on the corner gas is $2.77 for regular unleaded. Prices here vary greatly by location (each island is different) and I know in kona right now regular unleaded is probably at least $3.00 a gallon since its about $0.30 higher there than here in Honolulu.

/ be aware the prices listed in the article are wholesale not the price at the pump.

Gas was between $1.35 and $1.20 in 1996. I am not saying close to $3 isn't screwed up, but you did not pay 89 cents nine years ago.

I distinctly remember paying $.89 a gallon 5 or 6 years ago, give or take a few years. My memory for time sucks, but I'm positive that gas price reached that low in Florida. (Or at least Tampa)

I paid (AUD)$1.20 a litre about an hour ago.
I dont see why its getting so much here as in Australia we consume 80% of our locally produced oil.

Kiribub, that chart got posted the LAST time this topic made Fark. I made a rough extrapolation of the chart to today's prices.

I saw over $2.80 coming home from work today. My gas tank's empty...oh, is fueling up going to be fun in the morning.

Nonsense after hitting around $1.50 ages ago gas eventually went below a buck a gallon. Then basically locked in a fairly steady state of around $1.15 to $1.25. Also as the current prices are due to futures market speculation and not market fundamentals, it'll come down. No market bubble lasts forever. And this one is going to get real expensive when it pops. Well to those who have futures contracts it will.

I remember it being 89 cents down in St louis about 9-10 years ago. was around 95 for mid, and a buck for premium. Oh god how things have changed :(

Why not just set it at $.99 and also set daylight saving time to 12noon all the time. That way it will be sunny out all the time and safer when we drive our affordable gasoline powered cars around. Bonus for the economy.
