"Meet Mark Wellman. He can kick your ass."
figuratively speaking....otherwise I suggest he's running an insurance scam.
2005-08-04 08:41:22 PM
Just how tall is the tallest mountain in Australia? I'm going to guess not all that tall.
2005-08-04 08:42:31 PM
ok, i can see somone climbing with just arms i guess, but to carry the wheel chair up with him? now he's just showing off.
2005-08-04 08:42:59 PM
no more dookie on the ground spreading disease.
2005-08-04 08:43:42 PM
I think the tallest mountain in Oz is only 7500 feet or so.

God Bless the North Cascades.
2005-08-04 08:43:42 PM
Well, considering there is a road that goes up the "mountain" (7310 feet is a hill) I don't think it is that odd.
2005-08-04 08:44:54 PM
Pfft. Australia's on the upside-down side of the earth, so it's really a washroom at the base of the mountain.

2005-08-04 08:45:03 PM
Ha! That's the same bullshiat which means that half of the parking spaces at the building where I work are empty all the time: cause there aren't any damn cripples working there!

If it's good enough for the Grand Canyon...

If they make an exception one time because applying the law would be stupid, sooner or later they'll be confronted with the reality that much of the time the law is stupid. So strict, mindless compliance is official policy.
2005-08-04 08:48:21 PM
Didn't RTFA, but this is probably a result of disability access laws being enforced uniformly, regardless of whether it makes sense. :P
2005-08-04 08:52:22 PM
Pfft! I've been skiing at 13,000 feet, almost twice the height of this "mountain". Pshaw!
2005-08-04 08:52:25 PM

Thank you for the "LOL"
I remember seeing that commercial (parody) in the South Park episode where Mr. Garrison invents "it." or whatever that homosexual transportation device was...
2005-08-04 08:53:03 PM
In other news, article aparently too boring to read.
2005-08-04 08:54:48 PM
Isn't it Mitch Hedberg who made thecomment about brail on drive through ATMs?

same concept....

We are SO damned PC these days you have to have a wheelchair bar on a bathroom at the top of a mountain....

crazy talk!
2005-08-04 08:59:21 PM
Wonder if any pervs will be "looking for their wedding rings" in that one...
2005-08-04 08:59:48 PM
If you build it, they will come.
2005-08-04 09:00:03 PM
This is even better than the skate park that was closed down because handicapped people couldn't use it.
2005-08-04 09:00:31 PM
i climbed mt kosciosco when i was seven with my family. i was chubby. it is not hard
2005-08-04 09:01:32 PM
and had i referred to the article i wouldnt have so TERRIBLY butchered the spelling of it. anyways, there is a trail to the "peak" very nice walk really

Looks real steep.
2005-08-04 09:05:19 PM
actually, the highest mountain in australia has a road leading up to it... a friend and I rode mountain bikes to the top in may and it wasn't such a tough ride. You can also catch a chairlift most of the way and it's a pleasant stroll to the top along the ridges of the australian alps, we met our girlfriends at the top as they didn't want to ride. And besides, there are already a few toilets about 300 metres below the summit.
2005-08-04 09:06:05 PM
They've got a boardwalk and trail almost all the way to the top. I suppose it's conceivable to wheelchair to the potty.

/no html skillz
//the boardwalk proves it's not a mountain
2005-08-04 09:06:45 PM
tallest mountain in aus is not that tall...i think there's actually a road almost to the top of it!
our is a very old and geologically stable continent, it's pretty much eroded flat compared to elswhere
2005-08-04 09:11:28 PM
Part of the lure of climbing is the feeling that not everyone can do it- it's a challenge that only strong people, fit people, and disabled people can meet.
2005-08-04 09:16:31 PM
I thought the Australians killed and ate their weakest.

I thought the Australians killed and ate their weakest.

I thought the Australians sent their weakest back to England, to ensure their new land is populated by only the hardiest hardened criminals.
2005-08-04 09:21:16 PM
There are like 2 handicap people in my apartment complex and probably 30 stalls. It is crazy. But from the sounds of it, this isn't all that strange...they can wheel to the bathroom.
2005-08-04 09:24:11 PM
Why is there braile on drive up ATM machines?
2005-08-04 09:25:26 PM
Theres a road leading up to it and they dont plan on servicing it for at least six months? I say the toilet paper lasts three weeks.
2005-08-04 09:26:04 PM
Maybe the guy with the painters truck parked in the handicapped section at my local bar will one day use the handicapped toilet.
2005-08-04 09:28:50 PM
"Loo with a View" is OK.

"Scene While You're Peein'" is better.
2005-08-04 09:38:39 PM
So what do you do, not enforce the building code in one place and then some crip finds out about it and sues, whether they ever intend on going there or not?

/never understood handicap spaces, especially at the mall. They don't have to walk, we do

Holy shiite, did you guys see this link (pop-less, I suck at html) at the bottom of the article?

Sorta like the Braille on the drive thru ATM.

This is a jumar.

[image from too old to be available]
This is a jumar and climbing harness.

With these, a handicapped person can indeed climb a mountain, however, if there's a trail to the top, so much the better.

If the crip wants to take a piss at the top of the mountain, the doctrine of "Leave Only Footprints (or Drag Marks, what have you)" stipulates that there be an accessible bathroom.

This has been Crip History Minute

There is Brail on Drive through ATM'S because all the interfaces for the ATM'S are made at the same location, at the same time, and it's cheaper to just make them *all* Braille, then to make some for blind people and some not.

Sorry, I've killed that joke for you, haven't I?

Felgraf: Sorry, I've killed that joke for you, haven't I?

You are so damned cute.

I just re-read that. For clarification, I'm gay, I just know too many straight women who b|tch about not having anyone to date.
2005-08-04 10:31:24 PM
Holy shiite, did you guys see this link (pop-less, I suck at html) at the bottom of the article?

Not only did i see it, I printed it out and left it on the night table.
2005-08-04 10:34:02 PM
I just hate going to the grocery store and there are fifteen handicap spots with maybe one filled if it is a busy day.

Seriously, how much prime parking space is left empty in the US at any minute during the day. 99 or maybe 98%.
How many square miles are empty?
It is a silly waste of space.
Make it one or to spots with an option for more spaces if they are needed.

I'm Swiss-Australian...

The Swiss have mountains. The Australians have hills... some big ones with the occasional snow cover, yes, but hills nevertheless...
