" Last summer, Jennifer Cabanayan appeared at community events, including the Mukilteo Lighthouse Festival and the National Night Out Against Crime, as Miss Everett Teen USA 2004. Now she has enlisted in the Army and will leave for boot camp at Fort Jackson, S.C., on Aug. 11.

The petite brunette says Army service has always been in the back of her mind.

"I'm capable, I'm healthy. This is the right thing to do," said Cabanayan, who attended Cascade and Marysville-Pilchuck high schools before earning her GED. "I cannot wait for that moment of putting on a uniform. It gives you that honor."

Wow, Amazing.

Looks like the neocons brainwashed that poor little girl. Too bad for her.

/sarcasm.

I didn't think the Army takes people with just a GED. I know the Marines don't.

2005-08-01 12:14:39 PM
Interesting. I hope she's doing it for patriotic reasons rather than publicity.

tarrant84: I didn't think the Army takes people with just a GED. I know the Marines don't.

All of the services take GEDs. They just have limits. I think it's the AF that is most selective (something like 1% of recruits).

I didn't think the Army takes people with just a GED. I know the Marines don't.

Right now, I'm willing to bet they'll take anything with a pulse and a trigger-finger.

Looks like you're right.

/not sarcasm

tarrant84: I didn't think the Army takes people with just a GED.

Given their current recruitment shortfalls, they're probably taking anyone with a heartbeat, and being lax with that standard.

2005-08-01 12:34:46 PM
Good for her.

2005-08-01 12:40:24 PM
Let's see how she feels after a few re-ups of active duty in Iraq.

That headline is complete shiat.

This pic is useless without a thread

oops...

I meant this thread is useless without a pic

2005-08-01 1:07:53 PM
We definitely need a pic, so I can make some joke about hitting it.

/I'd target it for friendly fire!

Meh, her choice to enlist. Time will tell whether she likes it or not.

Although I would be curious to know why she got her GED rather than finish high school. Theres always a story behind that.

2005-08-01 1:13:51 PM
"Current events, that's not just a class"

Oh she graduated high school alright. George Bush High, class of '03

Google result: Your search - "Jennifer Cabanayan" - did not match any documents. Not a single Google hit for someone who, according to the article, is such an active, civically-minded, helping individual? Hmmmmm. Sounds a little suspicious. Hell, I'm a nobody--I've never even been Miss Everett Teen USA--and a Google search of my real name comes up with at least 30 or 40 hits or more that are about me.

her grandfather says "she thinks it's going to be a picnic."

-nice job on 9/11, bush.

DrySocket: Although I would be curious to know why she got her GED rather than finish high school. Theres always a story behind that.

I know lots of people who opted out of high school and got their GED. Their reasons were varied from those who wanted to get done early so they could start college, or the fact that they moved and their new school district was going to force them to take several classes over, so they took the GED instead. I don't think it carries the negative connotation that it used to.

Wow. Way to string together some random thoughts.

According to Miss Teen USA's website, the 2004 winner was Shelly Henning:

Jen didnt even make the top 10 cut.. hmph.

Is Miss Everett Teen USA a local thing only? If so, that makes this article more boring.

I love the way people are thrashing her for this...

Dancin_In_Anson: I love the way people are thrashing her for this...

I'm not thrashing her... I think she'll be sent to some cushy little job where some high ranking somebody can take advantage of her. After all, they wouldn't send a pretty little girl into the desert to die, would they? Oh... hehe what was I thinking, of course they would.

rhiannon

Thanks for the link, but WTF? What good is a modeling profile without pics? That has got to be the most worthless site ever.

i loved one of the banners at the bottom Jabber

"Meet HOT Women....Meet RICH Men"

meh...

Then, in some time in the future when she gets killed, we can have a national outcry like we did for [insert name of football player whose name I've already forgotten] as if somehow her enlistment/death is more important than those of the countless others whose names we have never even heard of.

Oh yeah, AND we'll be able to start up the national whine about women in the military again.

Here is pic of the young lady.

When our son, then a recent Princeton graduate, decided to join the Marine Corps in 2001, I advised him thus: "Do what you must, but be advised that, flourishing rhetoric notwithstanding, this nation will never truly honor your service, and it will condemn you to the bottom of the economic scrap heap should you ever get seriously wounded." The intervening years have not changed my views; they have reaffirmed them.

Unlike the editors of the nation's newspapers, I am not at all impressed by people who resolve to have others stay the course in Iraq and in Afghanistan. At zero sacrifice, who would not have that resolve?

I'd salute it.

I'd hit it.

I didn't think the Army takes people with just a GED. I know the Marines don't.

Yes they do, and judging by the intelligence of most of the guys in my ex-husband's platoon, they take quite a few of them. I guess as long as they pass the ASVAB they are all good to go.

2005-08-01 3:22:58 PM
The Miss Everett Teen USA title was a way to have a voice.

Because everyone listens to teenagers...

2005-08-01 3:23:56 PM
tarrant84: I didn't think the Army takes people with just a GED. I know the Marines don't.

They only take a certain amount a year.

Also, if you have a GED, you can not apply for Special Forces. Special Forces doesn't take people with GED.

At least, those are the rules that they supposedly say.

2005-08-01 3:24:07 PM
She can service my member.

2005-08-01 3:24:18 PM
If she wants to fight the war on terror, she'd be better off joining the CIA.

2005-08-01 3:24:38 PM
Her modeling portfolio says she's done "orthodontic modeling."

I wish I could say she has the whitest teeth I've ever come across, but that just wouldn't be true.

2005-08-01 3:25:32 PM
From the article:

"If smaller kids think you're a princess, they might listen more," Cabanayan said.

Not MY kids!

2005-08-01 3:25:42 PM
Although I would be curious to know why she got her GED rather than finish high school. Theres always a story behind that.

Them liberal high schoools teach the doctrines of satan. Her parents (Otis and Paulene) probably just wanted to save her from the ravishing grip of education.

2005-08-01 3:25:45 PM
3 years from now she will be the star of German "Stump" porno movies.

/My daughter would never serve, not with broken knees and all.
//would prefer a limping daughter to no daughter.

2005-08-01 3:26:34 PM
She is of course going to end up in Iraq, which has nothing to do with the "war on terror". Sucks to be a naive young person these days.

2005-08-01 3:26:36 PM
Dumbass.

'Fresh meat for the grinder!!' - one armed dude from the bug movie when welcoming casper.

/too bad she'll be wasted on the army

2005-08-01 3:27:20 PM
I'd run it up a flagpole and salute it.

Can't beleive there aren't any more pictures than this.

2005-08-01 3:27:24 PM
The people with GEDs get assigned to go fetch IEDs.

War on Suckers.

2005-08-01 3:27:38 PM
You people are great, we've got hundreds of thousands of US troops stationed in many places other than the Middle East, South Korea for example along the DMZ. Those people never go home right? New troops never come in to replace them? But that doesn't really matter now does it? Because as we all know, no one but brainwashed Republicans want to join the US armed forces.

2005-08-01 3:27:44 PM
***"I cannot wait for that moment of putting on a uniform. It gives you that honor."***

especially that standard issued unisex pink frilly underwear.

2005-08-01 3:28:33 PM
Call her a dumbass now.

Call her a hero when she's dead.

/the coffin of the hero passes in front of the coward's house.
