This has quickly become one of my favorite aspects of Fark.

I wish I were good enough a photographer to compete! I may still try, however.

Go ahead. The more the merrier. (You don't know how many crappy pictures we take. We only post the good ones. ;)

idle_hands: fabulous btw labman!

Thanks, that's one of my favorites too. What pretty red eyes and it was just sitting on the bench when I woke up and sat there patiently while I went and got the camera and came back.

Technically not very good due to bad camera and darkness, but the creepy factor is there. Click to enlarge.

Taken on my mother's deck in summer of 2001. She hung strands of lights outside. Bugs, of course, flocked to the lights. Spiders, not being the dumbest creatures on Earth, followed the food.

The competition is too good every night. Many of these are flat out amazing. Especially considering how bugs are not necesarily the most cooperative of subjects.

2005-07-27 9:26:52 PM
Excellent shots whm3, very crisp. What equipment did you use?

2005-07-27 9:31:17 PM
Rebel XT (350D) with the kit 18-55, and a Canon580ex flash with the built in diffuser. Then I cropped and color corrected, and reduced in Photoshop. As a note, these were shot 3 days ago, outdoors, at 3am, because I'm an insomniac. This is also after both of my dogs had the cicada rolling around in their mouths for a few minutes each. It's a wonder it still had wings. The third shot is the way the color came out of the camera.

FlashyFemm: Could it be a dragonfly larva?

another pic

In the summer I find lots of them stuck to trees. It's really neat. They've already "hatched" and the larva remains pretty much in-tact and still REALLY clung to the tree.

Oh wow. Kudos to you all. My vote button finger done worn out. My dad used to do these kinds of photos with Nikon cameras and bees and hornets conveniently "calmed down" by a few hour visit to the fridge. Drove my mom farking crazy, but it taught me to appreciate our creepy crawly friends.

As do you all. This is one of the more beautiful photo threads I've ever seen on Fark. Just because their skeletons are on the outside and they can pull some nasty stinger whoop-ass on you doesn't mean they're evil...

/Has been stung by bees too many times, once by a wasp, which was enough (in the squishy side of the wrist, no less), and always helps crickets find their way home

2005-07-28 4:48:41 AM
This is my first Farktography. I took my photos all on the same night, last summer, with a digital Olympus Camedia D-100. I have no idea what kind of spider the one in the leaf is, but the yellow and black one is an argiope or banana spider.

That little guy looks a lot like one I found in my garden in Brisbane once, if you disturb him each of the red dots shoots out a little set of poisonous bristles that will give you a painful skin irritation on contact. Not nice!

Bango Skank: Is that what I think it is?

Indeed it is. We don't have to check our shoes, because they don't tend (knock on wood) to get into the garage or the house. We find them mostly if we leave things laying out. The one in that picture was behind a bag of potting soil my wife left leaning against the house the last time she potted some plants.

I've told her the day we ever find one in the house is the day we're selling. :)

Fantastic photos everyone. There are several I would like to make comments on but I just don't have the time to do so.

Even though I got stuck in major traffic on the way home from the airport, I got home at 7:30 last night and thought that I would be able to participate in this contest, but do to a heavy storm that came through the area, my electricity was knocked out and didn't get turned back on till 3am. I guess I'll same my creepy crawly pics for the next time this theme comes around.

Hope to participate in next week's contest.

That's actually a family of flies that evolved to mimic bees.

Family Syrphidae

of course, there were a couple others that were posted like that too, but meh. You can tell because it only has one set of wings and the antannae don't look like those of ants.

2005-07-28 2:03:54 PM
A lot of these pictures are absolutely amazing. Some would have been better if more of the bug was in focus though :(

Remember: use a higher f-stop when photographing things like bugs to make a larger focal plane.

First entry to any fark contest.
Polyphemus Moth, Eugene, Oregon, June 05 2000 (it's named after the eponymous Cyclops, son of Poseidon and Thoosa due to the eye on the wing and the massive size)
This one is male. The feathery antennae find females from miles away. You can find them anywhere in North America, but they're relatively uncommon. It's about as large as a hand, around eight inches wingspan, thumb-sized body, and it sounds like a bird when it knocks against the glass.
