In the foreground, not pictured, there's a Korean punk band performing, which is why that guy has that ugly grimace on his face. By the way, it's 2pm when this was taken, which probably explains why he's so disheviled.

I haven't been able to do any still photography in a while (cinematography, that's another story, thankfully), so I was feeling left out...

...until I realized I have a large amount of my college newspaper photography portfolio online.

Interestingly, working for mid-sized college newspaper isn't fast-paced. There's not a lot of breaking news, and as such, not always a lot of emotional pictures to be taking. All three of my choices came from my basketball photography.

So here goes:

[image from img308.imageshack.us too old to be available]

Not sure how to describe this emotion. UNCW freshman ballers Vladmir Kuljanin and Daniel Fountain were hyped to bring some much-needed game to our bench. We were doing a story on the big shoes they had to fill, so I asked them to give me intimidation. This is what we came up with.

Exhilaration. Brett Blizzard, UNCW's star player, cuts the final piece of the net after his senior-year CAA tournament championship victory.

I'm not eloquent enough to encapsulate this emotion. Tim Burnette, CAA tournament, spring 2003.

Unfortunately, I don't have my favorite (and most emotional) picture online -- UNCW center Aaron Coombs, just after sinking two clutch free throws to give UNCW the lead over Maryland in the 2003 NCAA tournament in the last five seconds and almost certainly to guarantee the win... but moments after Steve Blake hit an amazing one-handed, running, desperation three-pointer to win, 75-73. Coombs has his hands on his head, shirt in mouth, and a look of complete and utter disbelief.

If anybody went to UNCW and read The Seahawk, you may know the picture. The Star-News ran practically the exact same shot -- I was sitting next to their photographer -- if you've seen that as well.

"******.IMG_0508.jpg is a bit of a large file, doncha think? *boom*"

whoops...

I'll try again.

Two entries this week. They are both older shots, but still not terrible, IMHO.

Here is #1.

Title: Otsukare-sama

"Otsukare-sama" is a thing that Japanese people say at the end of work. To me, this image captures that feeling of being at the end of a long day of work. I don't remember the exact settings, but the image was taken with an old Honeywell Pentax H1-a. The film is T-Max 400. IIRC, I think the aperture was f/16. The shutter speed was probably 1/125s. The setting is the annual Melbourne, FL Art Festival in 1999.

Title: Shyly in Love

This is a shot I took about 2 years ago of a friend who I was teaching photography to. I don't remember the camera settings at all. All I can say is that this is a completely candid shot.
