Sounds like a religious version of the free state project.

I like this idea. And not in a jerky way either. It's nice when people think the same way, and communities tend to be stronger when they do. If all the strongly conservative (traditional not political) Christians move there I'm sure they'd be happier and the communities they left would be happier as well without their interference based on religious concerns.

Everyone would be happy!

That is awesome!

/still, it's old news.

Alabama is yours for the taking, too, if you want it.

"Their aim: to tip the political scales, which they see as already weighted heavily to the right, further in that direction."

Religion and politics! Yay! It worked real good for the Taliban. (be afraid, be very afraid)

Secular Fundamentalist unfamiliar with history writes over the top headline that South Carolina might create an 'extreme far-right theocracy', with secession as an ultimate goal

2005-07-12 8:59:56 AM
Wow. Moving to an already red state to "to tip the political scales". Genious.

2005-07-12 9:07:31 AM
Whew, I guess I got out of there just in time.

2005-07-12 9:11:39 AM
They can have the rest of the state, but can we keep Charleston?

2005-07-12 9:13:28 AM
Good riddance, guys. And good luck with that.

Secular Fundamentalist unfamiliar with history writes over the top headline that South Carolina might create an 'extreme far-right theocracy', with secession as an ultimate goal

How is it an over-the-top headline if it just describes the story? And I'm fairly certain the "history" the submitter was referring to was, oh, I don't know, maybe the last time sucession was tried?

If they consolidate in one location it will make their extermination easier.

2005-07-12 9:19:46 AM
They only got a few families so far. They are way behind the curve.
/Instead of being the light of the earth like the Bible says, let's move to one place and make it REALLY bright.

2005-07-12 9:23:24 AM
If they promise to stay out of the affairs of the rest of us living out of their theocracy, then I for one am all for it.

Dear Fundementalist Christians considering moving to SC,

Please do not let anyone discourage you. Please go ahead and move. The good Lord will provide for you.

Thanks!
BooBoo

PS- When you get thirsty for a brew, just head north. We'll take care of you.

2005-07-12 9:41:43 AM
Whoo-hoo! Let the whole Southeast become Jesusland... All the fundies can go and hate gays, abortionists, Jews, and Pagans all they want.

In the meantime, we can move onto the 21st century in the rest of the country without the religious zealots to worry about.

win/win, baby

I have no problem with these people banding together and living together with common goals and dreams. As long as it's not forced on those who don't appreciate that type of stuff, they have my permission to do anything they want. If you have extremist and radical ideas that aren't accepted in mainstream America (but are still legal) go ahead and live in the middle of the boondocks, free from heathen interference. I assure you none of those sinners would go to that town on their own free will, so you'll be sheltered from the blashphemeous teachings of the rest of the world.

I'd be all for it, so long as they didn't have nukes.

Of course, in ten years or so the government of independent Christian South Carolina would have to start taking measures to keep all of their super-happy born-again citizens from escaping the new homeland:

All these states are yours - except Missouri. Attempt no shenanigans here.

Former soldier and convicted felon Snake Plisken sent in to get the last godless secular fundamentalists out of South Carolina in John Carpenter's latest masterpiece

ESCAPE FROM JESUSLAND

2005-07-12 10:40:06 AM
All your state are belong to (Jes)us

If they pull this off, I can't wait to hear the hissy fits the first time they run afoul of the US Constitution.

SherKhan: All these states are yours - except Missouri. Attempt no shenanigans here.

Hi-friggin'-larious.

bakarocket: Everyone would be happy!

Everyone except the normal people already living in SC who would either have to live with it or leave their homes in search of sanity.

These guys should move to Montana or someplace else remote and start their own towns. That way they aren't displacing anyone.

2005-07-12 10:55:24 AM
And because it has to be said,

The newcomers...would help elect candidates who think like them on abortion (outlawing it), and homosexual marriage (making sure it never becomes legal here) and Christian religious expression in government settings (taking away all restrictions).

It's wonderful to see people living lives full of compassion the way Jeebus would have wanted. *rolls eyes*

I hear Idaho is big on setting up communities for those who want to get in touch with their Christian Identity. :-)

</flaming troll>

This is why we should have stronger state rights. The Fundies can all move to a state where they are happy with the laws there, and I can move to the People's Republic of Conneticut. Everyone can find the state where the laws best suit them.

2005-07-12 11:18:38 AM
BTW the feds will never allow this to happen, imagine this

on a much larger scale.

if we could put all the religious zealots, FCC assholes, conservatives, stupid parents who don't keep score in childrens sports and Baptists into one state, wall it off and call it a fair deal.. i would do be all for it.
I think the Free U.S would be a better place for it.
then i could listen to XM radio without fear that some lobbying asshat wants to censor it..
i can send my kids out ot play soccer without helmets on..
i could go a week without hearing about some gruesome death being "gods will"..
we could have personal responsibility again.

we could save ourselves from raising a nation of pussies (like we are doing now)...

this is a GREAT idea.
round em up!

Dr.Knockboots: if we could put all the...[various elements]...into one state, wall it off and call it a fair deal

Thunderdome!

Step 1: Open liquor/porno/tattoo shop on border of newly independent nation New Jesustonia.
Step 2: ???
Step 3: Profit!

This is old news. I think the website to the actual religious group was what was posted last time. Anyway, as a South Carolinian, I want to say:

This cements my point that SC never makes the news except for WTF moments.

2005-07-12 12:52:21 PM
Riche: I'd be all for it, so long as they didn't have nukes.

SRS.gov We've got the nukes. Big time.

There is already too many here.!

2005-07-12 12:54:40 PM
South Carolina is too close to DC. They can have Oklahoma I think.

2005-07-12 12:55:32 PM
South Carolina?

They can have it.

/wake me when they try to do this to Massachusetts.

2005-07-12 12:55:44 PM
Somehow, I'm surprised that the Westboro Baptist Church isn't involved in this.

2005-07-12 12:55:58 PM
pay no mind to the hurricanes.

More power to them. I'll just have to detour when traveling back to Maryland.

WalMart sales are expected to increase 500% in SC if this happens.

/nothin'

Ahahaha look at that fat cow with her double chins. Big fat lump of shiat...of course they love this idea! They suck at life! All they are good at is believing in a lie and pushing out babies.

2005-07-12 12:58:15 PM
Great. Now if these people would just limit their efforts to a single state instead of trying it with the entire country.

2005-07-12 12:58:31 PM
I want all the women to move to Tennessee, and create a gynecocracy, and mandate that they all get naked and flail me with bloodwurst.

.

2005-07-12 12:58:51 PM
The problem is most fundies just talk the talk but they don't actually walk the walk, there cheating on their spouses and beating their kids, drinking and doing drugs. So I doubt many people will actually buy into this whole scheme.

2005-07-12 12:58:52 PM
Move to Utah.

2005-07-12 12:59:08 PM
And call me Debbie.

2005-07-12 12:59:14 PM
It starts like this, then once their community project is successful they'll franchise under the name "Reverend Wayne's Pearly Gates"?

/not obscure
//burbclaves = sad

"If it's going to be ugly and bloody, nobody wants that," he said.

...he said, wiping a small bit of drool that had leaked from the corner of his mouth. His eyes glittered as he looked past me. "Martyr," he whispered...

Old news.

The reasoning behind Christian Exodus makes my head spin. It would be awesome if there was a showdown at Fort Sumter. Again. Just to prove that history repeats for the stupid.
