Mr. Programmer:

i was reading the rules but im confused about something.. i have 9 photos, all of different things, am i allowed to post all 9? do i have to post all 9 separately or can i do it togethers?

Yes you can enter all 9, as long as the composition is totally different. Post them all separately so they can be voted for separately.

Submission Rules (Link)

You must be the original photographer of your entry. It needs saying- do not enter anyone else's photography as your own work.

You are only allowed to enter a photograph once in the regular contests. Do not submit the same photo to another contest later. Multiple submissions of the same themed photograph in a contest is not allowed. ie, 4 photos of your subject at different angles or composition.

Ideally, your photograph should be presented as taken, with as little alteration in Photoshop or other image editing programs as possible. No part of your image can be pasted in from another photograph, and you cannot add gratuitous text or borders to your image. A small 2 pixel wide border may be used to enhance an obsure background if necessary but nothing larger. Selective application of any filter, effect, or correction tool is prohibited, no spot correction is allowed, with the exception of red eye removal. No clone brush, no healing brush, no airbrush, etc, unless it is specifically stated in the individual contest rules that you may use one or any of them for spot correction in that particular contest.

The following modifications and filters (or their non-Photoshop equivalents), when applied evenly to the entire image, are allowed:

* Adjustment layers
* Levels
* Curves
* Brightness/Contrast
* Greyscale
* Sepia (or adding a similar monochrome tone to an image)
* Hue/saturation/lightness
* Colour balance
* Sizing/rotating
* Cropping
* Sharpen
* Unsharp Mask
* Dust & Scratches
* Jpeg artifact removal
* Moire pattern removal
* Median Cut
* Noise
* Gaussian blur

No other effects filters are allowed, unless otherwise specified in the contest rules.

CuddleButt, I actually wanted to do a life of the dead bicycle on the Philly streets - but I never choose the right bike and it dissapears in a few days- while the ones I don't take pictures of stay there for months.

And I'm glad that your bike isn't in that condition. The most expensive thing there is the lock at this point I'd assume.

You know what gang, I think I may switch this contest to Wednesday nights instead of Thursday nights, especially if these are going to start appearing on Fark and not just Totalfark. Reason being, everything other weekend I pick up my daughter and usually my Thurs night before my weekend with her I need some time getting things ready for her visit. I'm just finding myself spending alot of time on here tonight.

Everyone ok with that? I'll make sure to post major notices ahead of time.

MrJ, your picture reminded me of this:

Tractor - Ted Hughes

The tractor stands frozen - an agony
To think of. All night
Snow packed its open entrails. Now a head-pincering gale,
A spill of molten ice, smoking snow,
Pours into its steel.
At white heat of numbness it stands
In the aimed hosing of ground-level fieriness.

It defied flesh and won't start.
Hands are like wounds already
Inside armour gloves, and feet are unbelievable
As if the toe-nails were all just torn off.
I stare at it in hatred. Beyond it
The copse hisses - capitulates miserably
In the fleeing, failing light. Starlings,
A dirtier sleetier snow, blow smokily, unendingly, over
Towards plantations Eastward.
All the time the tractor is sinking
Through the degrees, deepening
Into its hell of ice.

The starting lever
Cracks its action, like a snapping knuckle.
The battery is alive - but like a lamb
Trying to nudge its solid-frozen mother -
While the seat claims my buttock-bones, bites
With the space-cold of earth, which it has joined
In one solid lump.

I squirt commercial sure-fire
Down the black throat - it just coughs.
It ridicules me - a trap of iron stupidity
I've stepped into. I drive the battery
As if I were hammering and hammering
The frozen arrangement to pieces with a hammer
And it jabbers laughing pain-crying mockingly
Into happy life.

And stands
Shuddering itself full of heat, seeming to enlarge slowly
Like a demon demonstrating
A more-than-usually-complete materialization -
Suddenly it jerks from its solidarity
With the concrete, and lurches towards a stanchion
Bursting with superhuman well-being and abandon
Shouting Where Where?

Worse iron is waiting. Power-lift kneels
Levers awake imprisoned deadweight,
Shackle-pins bedded in cast-iron cow-shiat.
The blind and vibrating condemned obedience
Of iron to the cruelty of iron,
Wheels screeched out of their night-locks -

Fingers
Among the tormented
Tonnage and burning of iron

Eyes
Weeping in the wind of chloroform

And the tractor, streaming with sweat,
Raging and trembling and rejoicing.

This is the 2nd DC-9 ever built. Flew regularly scheduled service for nearly 40 years and was retired just prior to this photo under the tail #700ME (Midwest Express). It was originally destined for a museum, but had to be scrapped after it was damaged beyond economical repair by a careless tug driver the week after it was ferried to the desert. A true shame if you ask me.

My Mother's bicycle. I told her I would fix it for her 2 years ago, but I never got around to it...instead I photographed it. This was taken in my pitch dark garage, 20 second exposure, lit by flashlight. To do the "lighting" I stood off the to left of the camera and bike...then waved the flashlight around the bicycle from the top.

Quadrajet:

To do the "lighting" I stood off the to left of the camera and bike...then waved the flashlight around the bicycle from the top.

That's pretty cool! When I got my Canon Powershot with up to 15 second exposure I did a lot of that sort of stuff with a flashlight, and a shot of some trees. Came up with some pretty interesting patterns depending on what I did with the flashlight!

Awesome stuff here, I'm really jealous. I have an awesome camera but lack the technical and composition skills to get anything better than good snapshots.

Every time I see pics like this of old dilapidated stuff I'm always reminded of high school yearbooks from the 70's. Seems they were always populated with poignant images of old rusty stuff. Guess it was a standard high school Photography 101 class assignment and plentiful filler.

I need to find it again, but I have a picture of the stairs in the Smithsonian's Natural History Museum. I remember how surprised I was that marble stairs had worn down over time, so that where people were most likely to step (one side going up, the other down) the stair tops had partially worn away. Marble, worn away by shoes. It blew me away. Now to try and find that pic...

I will update the Farktography site tonight with the listing of the winner, and probably make some clarifications in the rules.

Looking forward to next week's contest, which, by the way, all upcoming contests will be on Wednesday and not Thursday. The Farktography site will reflect that once I have a chance to update the site.

I'm actually moving to the Philadelphia area (Main Line) at the end of this month. Nice to know there are some other farkers there.

Never knew about these contests. I've been doing a lot of photography lately. One quick question: Would a stitched-together panorama count as being altered too much (i.e. the "no pasting of one photo into another" rule)? I've been building a lot of Boston pictures before I leave.

//Need to remember to take my camera on the T.

Man, this thing is still going!

Anyway.

Do darkroom manipulations count? This wasn't photoshoped, it is two seperate images I took, negatives layed on top of each other and printed. If it breaks the rules, mods feel free to remove it.

I dunno. Hey Cuddlebutt your rules kind of only address digital manipulations of photos. I don't think anyone even considered that people actually do stuff in a real darkroom anymore! :)

And I don't think you're going to see too much of it either, so I think we have to allow it. That or modify the rules for the future.

WhiskeyBoy:

Several PS mods are similar to darkroom mods. I would say you would have to consider whether or not what you have done in the darkroom would be similar to it's PS method, and if that PS mod is allowed. Any spot modifications would not be allowed. Combining two images in the darkroom would I would say would not be allowed unless it was to combine them as a panoramic photo which has been addressed.

This is all pretty new, so any questions feel free to ask and we'll try to address everything in the submission rules.

2005-06-03 11:33:52 AM
Ok, so I am taking that to mean darkroom manipulations are legit, at least for now. So here is another one, used a pin to scratch the negative film, then printed it, then used the positive print to create a negative image.

Last image.
