Um... It's... a... game... This kid obviously had other problems if he took the game that seriously. Wow.

What a way to be remembered, "That Dork Everquest player."

2002-04-03 10:01:33 AM
A guy next door to me in my dorm plays everquest 24-7. He plays one character makes it really good and then sells it on ebay for some ungodly amount of money. He hasn't been to a class all semester because of that game. If his character died(i dont know how everquest works) or it got hacked i could see him killing him self.
2002-04-03 10:03:56 AM
To me it sounds like she was just sueing Sony to find out information and not necessarily to be awarded damages. If that's true, I don't think it's unreasonable.

To blame EverQuest for the suicide is of course ridiculous. Especially since it sounds like he had a lot of other problems.
2002-04-03 10:04:29 AM
The biggest part of the case, as I see it, is to make SOE release the guy's chat logs. (Which, strangely enough, if he had logging on would be on the home computer.) That's not a bad request in and of itself. But she did hire a lawyer who is against this form of entertainment, so he will probably convince her to sue for money. Which shouldn't win.

Scarneck I don't know if this mother didn't raise him emotionally straight, but the guy did have epileptic seizures. Maybe this was the cause of his derangement, and not his mother's lack of motherhood skills. Anyhow, to quit your job over EQ is a bad thing.

Sure the game is fun for a week, but then you realize 60% of the game is spent sitting on your butt chatting. 30% of the game is trying to get where you need to be and the final 10% might be fighting. Ok, so it took me 6 months to figure that out, LOL.
2002-04-03 10:04:44 AM
An odd but very sobering story. I know too many people that are 100% addicted to that game.

Somebody should get online with his main character and chat with the people he knew. I'll bet Sony has logs of all his activity and chat text somewhere...I bet it would be interesting to go over all that stuff.
2002-04-03 10:05:08 AM
I play EQ and some people take the game way too seriously. But just like in this guys case, they had problems before the game.

As for your friend he can get his account banned if he ebays stuff. I personal wish people would stop ebaying EQ. Causes idiots and rude people to play. But that is another story.
2002-04-03 10:06:02 AM
can we put a dumbass tag on this kid.

A friend of a friend of mine was so into this crap that he used real money to buy Everquest money off ebay. Payed ALOT for it too....what a tard.

I'm an elf!
2002-04-03 10:07:24 AM
That's like me sueing the porn site owners because my wang is raw from rubbing one out 20-30 times a day.

Heeeeyyyyy... good idea.
2002-04-03 10:08:50 AM
This article would have been pretty amuzing or angering to read if it hadn't been on slashdot a couple of days ago.
2002-04-03 10:08:52 AM
. i'm suing the EverQuest makers as well..
have you ever smelled an EverQuest player ?
those toxic fumes are endangering society.
2002-04-03 10:09:04 AM
Do those hairy palms of yours interfere with mouse control?
2002-04-03 10:09:26 AM
Reminds me of my freshman roommate. After he spent a year paying more attention to EQ than school, his grades went to hell and he was put on probation, and subsequently got kicked out. What did he do after that? He got his shiat together and got admitted elsewhere soon after.

Why didn't he kill himself? Because, unlike this woman's college-aged kid, he wasn't a DUMBASS... well, after his freshman year, at least.
2002-04-03 10:11:58 AM
"didn't notice anything odd in his behavior during that week. "

He quit his job to play EverQuest. That certainly sounds odd.
2002-04-03 10:12:08 AM
"Did Game Play Role in Suicide?"

Hummm... an intentional, or unintentional pun on "Role-Playing Game"?

&lgt;insert standard Videodrome reference here>
2002-04-03 10:12:47 AM
Everquest sucks.

Asheron's Call: Dark Majesty!!!!
2002-04-03 10:14:22 AM
A friend of mine plays "Evercrack".... he was telling me once he lost track of time after work, and played for 18 hrs. over a weekend.... personally , I don't see the big deal about the game, seems kinda cheesy to me....

besides, I'll stick to my Rogue

2002-04-03 10:15:51 AM
At least the EQ addiction keeps these people off the streets, and prevents them from breeding.

A friend of mine had a saying "Not all the puppies are supposed to live." Anyone with those kind of mental problems would have killed themselves anyway. If it hadn't been everquest it would have been music or porn or the smurfs or something.

2002-04-03 10:18:21 AM
can we find the pic of him on rotten_com? I will email to his mother for being stupid.
2002-04-03 10:19:19 AM
"Oh no, it's not my fault that my kid commited suicide playing Everquest because I didn't see the warning signs of depression and suicide. I'M SUING THE VIDEO GAME MAKERS!" What next, "Blame Canada"? Grow up lady!
2002-04-03 10:19:24 AM
It never fails - someone always has to play the Smurf card in these types of conversations...
2002-04-03 10:19:39 AM
Does this mean that the Columbian Drug Cartels can now be sued?

Just an idea!
2002-04-03 10:21:42 AM
The "They would have found something else" argument holds no water

In the article there is this quote:

"However, Faragher doesn't think there's much of a case to be made against SOE for responsibility. "If it wasn't this (EverQuest), it would have been something else," Faragher said. "I don't see a culpability as much as I see a lack of feelings of Sony's social responsibility. I don't think this kid would have played any less if Sony had posted a warning."

In this forum http://groups.yahoo.com/group/EverQuest-Widows/
many times I have seen countless posts that share this same sentiment. But the fact is that this young man did NOT find something else, he found Everquest. Just because there may be hundreds of destructive addictions out there does not lessen the impact of this one, nor negate the need for a more formalized support structure. My life has been destroyed by Everquest, as have countless others. My family beat alcohol addiction and drug addiction. It could not beat EQ.

In the article there is also this quote:

"Anything that has the potential to generate significant changes in mood, effect or feeling is potentially addictive to someone, said Faragher, and EverQuest, a game with no end -- unlike your typical video game -- is no exception. He defines addiction as having three qualities: It must by some reasonable definition be harmful, the person's behavior is apparently out of control, and most important, the addict expects the behavior will lead to feelings that are preferred to those felt before indulging in the activity."

Everquest is just as destructive as alcoholism and the government even gives tax deductions to people battling that. More awareness of the problems of gaming addiction and programs to help treat it need to be implemented.
2002-04-03 10:21:57 AM
I played a Halfling but quit after being molested by an Orge.
2002-04-03 10:22:39 AM
I died playing Super Mario Brothers and wanted to kill myself. I was right there, but then I missed that jumpa nd landed on a pirhanna plant. It was the saddest day of my life.

Back to reality here. If this guy couldn't handle reality (as may be evident by being so addicted to EverCrack) I doubt it's the game's fault he killed himself. So apparently anyone can sue anything if it was the last thing someone was doing before they killed themself?

2002-04-03 10:22:50 AM
Darwin Award?

The mother's stupid too. If she knew he had seizures from playing it, why did she let him play it? Why didn't she just take it away from him? Duh.
2002-04-03 10:23:05 AM
its simple. parents do not want to take responsibility anymore. they want something they dont understand to take the fall.

I hope DMA and Rockstar games make a more violent GTA4.
2002-04-03 10:24:32 AM
"He quit his job the week before he did this and played (the game) the whole week, and I want to see if there was something that made him do this because he didn't have any major crises in his life." - This has to be the stupidest parent on the f*cking planet. No major crisis? If I quit my job to play a f*cking video game, I'd call that a f*cking crisis. God, people are stupid.
2002-04-03 10:24:42 AM
Serious Sam.
2002-04-03 10:28:12 AM
"He defines addiction as having three qualities: It must by some reasonable definition be harmful, the person's behavior is apparently out of control, and most important, the addict expects the behavior will lead to feelings that are preferred to those felt before indulging in the activity."

Sure, no capacity for abuse of the word "addiction" there...
2002-04-03 10:29:11 AM
"No major crisis? If I quit my job to play a f*cking video game, I'd call that a f*cking crisis."
lol... no shiat....hahaha

2002-04-03 10:29:43 AM
I can see how an EQ addict could kill themselves; sort of...

I used to play EQ and I got a ranger up to level 25 or so. For those who have played the game, you know how long this takes, especially as it was the only character I had... anyway, My internet connection was all farked up for like a month and I couldn't get online, so, I couldn't sign on the game... to make a long story short, for some reason the game deleted my character. Pissed off, I called EQ customer service. Sorry, can't do shiat. fark SONY. I was pissed. I cancelled my account and haven't played again. Like I said, I was pissed as hell, but I guess I can sort of understand why a real hard core addict would kill themselves if maybe something farked up happened to a character they had maybe since the game started... that would be what? 3 years now? Sad really.. think about that... 3 years all the time playing, that's like losing your entire identity... very sad...
2002-04-03 10:29:44 AM
Well, I have to say that this really isn't the parent's fault. The kid was 21. He's old enough to waste his life on his own, without having to drag blame onto the parents.
Now, if said mom is trying to get money out of Sony due to her son's choice of killing himself - well, more power to her - right up until the judge throws the case out of court.
2002-04-03 10:30:47 AM
So the mom knew he had seizures from playing the game, got evicted from his apartment for playing the game, was in "rehab" for playing the game, and quit his job to play the game. But it's Sony's fault for not spotting the one guy out of thousands/millions(?) who play? Uh, ok.

Bad mom. Case closed.
2002-04-03 10:31:52 AM
It looks to me like she's sue-ing to get access to the logs, not to sue them for the sake of damages.. unless I read it wrong. If that's the case, I don't see anything wrong with that..
2002-04-03 10:32:22 AM
i had an addiction to UNO.
sweet sweet UNO.

dictionary.com :

"ad·dic·tion Pronunciation Key (-dkshn)

Compulsive physiological and psychological need for a habit-forming substance: a drug used in the treatment of heroin addiction.
An instance of this: a person with multiple chemical addictions.

The condition of being habitually or compulsively occupied with or or involved in something.
An instance of this: had an addiction for fast cars."

Everquest is a habit forming substance, and in order to play and succeed in the game you must habitually and compulsively play it. Its the way the game is set up. I know, I played myself for 2 years.

2002-04-03 10:34:21 AM
also, big deal that one person killed them selves out of the millions of people. Its not like the a monster came out of the computer screen and shot him in the face.....or did it?? hmmmmm.
2002-04-03 10:35:06 AM
I have an addiction to going out to the pub and meeting a few friends for drinks.

Oh no, hang on - that's a life.
2002-04-03 10:36:06 AM
CUA please don't expect us to take that seriously. Everquest and Sony are not responsible even slightly for what this guy did. We in our society want everything to be an addiction. It keeps us from being responsible for our own actions.

Do you think that maybe there are problems in these lives and in these relationships which lead these people to make the decisions they do. How many of them were created by those people.

Everyone is not a victim!
