British comedy is about 20 years behind the U.S.. Canadian, about 45 years.
2002-03-27 12:26:33 PM
Johnn Cleese also says American websites have worse spelling than British ones.
2002-03-27 12:27:42 PM
If American sitcoms are funnier, I'm sure glad I'm not watching British TV.

Is he counting The Simpsons as a sitcom? If so, he's right.
2002-03-27 12:27:51 PM
I have no idea of what to do. This is on at the same time as the new Greg the Bunny show, which I think is (or was on the IFC) absolutely hilarious. I think Greg the Bunny is going to win...
2002-03-27 12:28:23 PM
actually they probably are better "keeping the quality high over a long period"..although ive never come across a sitcom in the states funnier that fawlty towers and the like..
2002-03-27 12:28:37 PM
Ok I agree with the statement. But Friends!?!? What a steaming pile of grade-A horse shiat.

...and his commercials for Titleist golf balls are about as funny as a poke in the eye.
2002-03-27 12:29:06 PM
he's evidently never seen Becker, Three's Company, The Montefuscos, The Brady Bunch, My Mother the Car, Hello Larry, The Hogan Family, Working Stiffs, Mr. Belvedere, Diff'rent Strokes, The Ropers, Joanie Loves Chachi or SMALL WONDER.
2002-03-27 12:29:07 PM
"Currently" is the key word here. The UK kicked our ass during the late 60's and 70's.
2002-03-27 12:29:11 PM
fb- says, "yawn."

Ol' Cleese just likes to watch Jennifer's boobies...
2002-03-27 12:29:58 PM
Has Mr. Cleese seen the Baby Bob debacle by any chance?
2002-03-27 12:30:24 PM
Blackadder or Veronica's Closet?

Gee, I don't know how I'd pick which one to watch.
2002-03-27 12:30:28 PM
Some of the early Benny Hills were pretty good.
2002-03-27 12:30:32 PM
I'd really hate to see the state of British sitcoms then. US TV sucks for the most part. Thankfully there are a few good shows: Simpsons, Family Guy, West Wing, Law&Order...the new Andy Richter show is pretty good too.
2002-03-27 12:30:35 PM
Most sitcoms simply suck. Same people, same old jokes, same venue's, same ideas, same, same, same. I avoid watching any of them. 70's Show had me watching for a few episodes but it's just the same repetitive thing over and over again.

Oh, and what's the deal with the braindead bruiser on Everybody Loves Raymond? Is that guy nartually a complete idiot or does he just sound like one?
2002-03-27 12:31:11 PM
Yep, Roseanne sure is funnier than Eastenders.

American sitcoms SUCK. From those who brought you such crap as Charles in Charge, Friends, Joanie loves Chachi, Good Times, the list goes on and on.

I'd far rather watch a bunch of British adverts (and get more humore from them) than suffer through most of the insipid s(h)itcoms we have here.

Simpsons and other such awesome programs are NOT sitcoms.
2002-03-27 12:31:17 PM
That's right, Baby Bob is an insult to it's viewers, and humanity at large.
2002-03-27 12:31:19 PM
Irish comedy ownzzZ 411. Father Ted is the funniest fvcking show. "Father, what would you say to a cup of tea?" "Feck off, cup!"
2002-03-27 12:31:22 PM
Actually I was joking, British comedy is funnier than American - but our sitcoms aren't funny or even entertaining. I could only name a few which were good.

The Simpsons is the better than every program on every television channel worldwide combined.
2002-03-27 12:31:22 PM
The Brits don't seem to have gotten over corny @$$ humor yet.
2002-03-27 12:31:24 PM
eh senor ?
2002-03-27 12:31:35 PM
There's only been, what, four really funny British sitcoms ever: Fawlty Towers, Black Adder, maybe Absolutely Fabulous tho I don't care for it, and ....uh....Are You Being Served?
I don't think Monty Python counts as a sitcom tho it is undeniably hilarious.
2002-03-27 12:31:56 PM
American sitcoms ? I thought all network shows were now reality shows. Where's the next Survivor being played, in Harlem ?
2002-03-27 12:32:13 PM
Hmmm...I think some sparks may fly, but will it catch?

2002-03-27 12:32:14 PM
Amen to that, Clown
2002-03-27 12:32:32 PM
Four words: are you being served?
2002-03-27 12:32:52 PM
One of the best ever Sitcoms was on HBO. Dream On.
2002-03-27 12:32:53 PM
Friends is about as funny as the Catholic Church, but I'm showing my age.
2002-03-27 12:33:05 PM
I say this in a matter of fact way and mean no disrespect to anyone.
Americans produce the best TV/Movies in the world.
You can attribute that to our life style, schools, money, evil-conspiracy, etc...
2002-03-27 12:33:09 PM
that old british comedy "Are you being served?" ruled.. they still show it on pbs i think
2002-03-27 12:33:25 PM
Oh, and the Young Ones. Lest we forget.
2002-03-27 12:33:52 PM
Television - teacher, mother, secret lover!
2002-03-27 12:34:00 PM
I like the British comedy Absolutely Fabulous, makes me laugh my farkin ass off those 2 drunk chicks
2002-03-27 12:34:12 PM
speaking of american tv...has anyone heard if the rumors about cancelling "futurama" are true?

i guess i'll be okay so long as "family guy" doesn't leave me...;)
2002-03-27 12:34:49 PM
Cleese is making money from American markets now, is he not?

seems like he simply knows what side his bread is buttered on.
2002-03-27 12:35:01 PM
yeah the Young Ones too show rox
2002-03-27 12:35:09 PM
Mrs.Slocombe's pussy! ROFL!
2002-03-27 12:35:18 PM
"speaking of american tv..."

They're both dead. *snif*
2002-03-27 12:35:19 PM
Snuh: What about Seinfeld, The Simpsons, The Ben Stiller Show, The Dana Carvey Show, The P.J.'s, Futurama, Family Guy, and the list goes on....
2002-03-27 12:35:30 PM
IF you liked Are You Being Served, you would LOVE Faulty Towers. THAT was a good comedy.
2002-03-27 12:35:30 PM
Did anyone catch the movie MR BEAN

2002-03-27 12:35:36 PM
Baby Bob does have one, er, two good things going for it.

Mmmmm, Joely Fisher's boobies...
2002-03-27 12:35:47 PM
both gone jadefrog.

unless you were joking. in which case. "..."
2002-03-27 12:36:03 PM
Fawlty Towers Rocked!!!
2002-03-27 12:36:17 PM
Ahhh The Young Ones..... and The League of Gentlemen...
2002-03-27 12:36:36 PM
Naw, I like Mr. Bean. Rowin makes corny humor watchable.
