this made me chuckle for some reason
2005-04-03 04:57:46 PM
Old news. Both of my brothers are teachers (one of them for six years now) and they were both instructed to grade papers in green so the kids don't freak out and have a panic attack.
2005-04-03 04:59:03 PM

My AP English teacher used to grade in green. My papers almost always looked like she had just dipped green ink. As far as I'm concerned, green is the scariest color.
2005-04-03 04:59:56 PM
Instead of getting a failing grade, a student should get bonked on the forehead with a silver hammer.
2005-04-03 05:04:44 PM
""It's taken a turn from 'Here's what you need to improve on' to 'Here's what you've done right,'" Powell said. "It's not that we're not pointing out mistakes, it's just that the method in which it's delivered is more positive.""

But you're not supposed to give a damn about what they've done right. If all you do is say, "Hooray! You did this, this, and this right! You get a little smiley-face sticker!", they're not going to give a shiat about what they did wrong, because it's not been brought to their attention.

This is your idea of a good teacher?

When I was in school, I saw more red ink on my tests than math problems. I'm mean.. come on! Everyone knows that 2 + 2 equals 22!

Wait.. that wasn't ink, that was lipstick.. hey! this kinda looks like a cat's buttprint..
2005-04-03 05:22:57 PM

In Japan, if you write in green ink, it's a sign that you absolutly hate the person you're writing to with the fury of ten thousand suns, or something like that...
2005-04-03 05:35:51 PM
It's crap like this that's contributing to kids being pansies these days. Mark in red, I say. Prepare them for the spilled blood they'll see once they get drafted.
2005-04-03 11:33:31 PM
I submitted this with a headline that went a different colour.
2005-04-03 11:42:41 PM
it may sound crazy, but why do you think hospitals, prisons, and other stressful places always tend to have light green walls?

I remember in college we took our final tests in specific rooms, ones with no posters and light bluish walls.

But then, I guess a room with red wall would be kind of weird.
2005-04-03 11:42:50 PM
Great, someone's going to blame it the liberals.

I blame the kids.
2005-04-03 11:43:28 PM
Is our children learning?
2005-04-03 11:43:31 PM
40below wins.

Also, this is really old news. It was on Fark about a year ago, if I remember correctly.
2005-04-03 11:46:20 PM
Let the pussification of America continue.
2005-04-03 11:46:23 PM
Lews, it was more like 6 months ago.
2005-04-03 11:46:23 PM
Back when I was a high school senior, I worried more about the amount of ink on my English papers rather than the color. If there was a drawing, espically of a "beautiful sunset" I knew it was very bad.
2005-04-03 11:48:21 PM
This is just one of the infinity plus one steps in the pussification of America.
2005-04-03 11:50:54 PM
What a bunch of dancing neo-hippy tree hugging bullshiat!

I swear, we treat kids like fabrege eggs in this country, then we wonder why they aren't learning (or if they is learning, for that matter), why they don't listen, why they just shanked me in the ribs and are torturing my housepets while listening to heavy metal in my car, which they also stole.

Every once in a while, you need to drop-kick your kids, or hell, any kids. And by drop-kick, I mean point out that they did something wrong, and will have to try again, not the WWE over-the-top-rope-flying-boots-of-death.

I think we all dealt with red ink, or were told at some point that we lost/failed/need to stop being a jackass, and we somehow maanged to come out okay.
2005-04-03 11:52:37 PM
Plaid ink, man. Leave 'em all in a state of confusion.
2005-04-03 11:54:22 PM
I submitted this with a funnier, albeit, offcolour headline.
2005-04-03 11:55:17 PM
kids today can't take stress now? can't even stand red??
come on... what's the different between having a big purple cross on ur paper and having a big red cross? if you'r wrong, you'r wrong, and the kid should face it... instead of hiding their mistakes in what they've done rite....

"you've got 2+2 wrong, but that's okay... since u can count the number of apples on the page, who cares if u can't do addition...", then a big green check mark, and a tiny green cross...
2005-04-03 11:57:52 PM

that's all I ever write to MY students
2005-04-03 11:59:42 PM
Ummm....wouldn't kids realize that the new color means they are wrong and then they would come to fear that color?

I mean think about it.
2005-04-04 12:00:01 AM
First: This is old news.

Second: I still give kids a big fat red "F" if they deserve it. Maybe it will be incentive to do better next semester.

Third: Carlin is a genius.

/teacher who is sick of "progressive" education. it doesn't work in the inner city. there is nothing wrong with memorizing.
//yes, i realize that i just wrote that without capitals, so please don't bother pointing that out.
2005-04-04 12:00:22 AM
That's the exact word that popped into both my own and my brother's heads. 'Pussification' sums it up perfectly.
2005-04-04 12:00:23 AM
I wonder if this will carry over to freshmen entering college. my profs use red ink and I can just see it now,
"well my high school teachers used blue ink so as not to hurt my feelings"
yeah whatever. I remember the stamps that went from a smiley face with a curl of hair sticking up for an "a" all the way to a frown with the little strand of hair drooping down for an "f" i think they got rid of those a long time ago.
2005-04-04 12:00:54 AM
Next thing you know, teachers are forbidden to give D's and F's.
2005-04-04 12:01:26 AM
For once, the following statement is ACTUALLY TRUE...

I submitted this earlier with a funnier headline.

Teachers eschew RED markers for friendly PURPLE. Your kid is still dumb as a box of rocks and doesn't know what 'eschew' means.
2005-04-04 12:04:26 AM
excellent reference.

do the kids of today really need more coddling? Yea, let's get them ready for life by not exposing them to it. I hate to see it when they get thier first job.....

/didn't RTFA
2005-04-04 12:04:30 AM

As long as they don't pronounce in "a-shoe."

Jeebus help us.
2005-04-04 12:05:33 AM
not a great headline. "dumb as a box of rocks" and "doesn't know what 'eschew' means" are redundant.

2005-04-04 12:06:35 AM
Not really QQue :p
2005-04-04 12:09:28 AM

Tomorrow I'm getting an attorney and go after big bucks from all those mean spirited red-penned oppressors who have ruined my childhood school experience. Wah! Wah! Wah!

As for tenured university professors and their toadies, they obviously prefer using red pens cause it matches their omnipresent political philosophy. If red was good enough for Marx, it's just fine by them.
2005-04-04 12:10:46 AM

Not really QQue :p

Geez, tough crowd....

How about my Exploding Duct Tape Factory rejection, then?
2005-04-04 12:12:45 AM
Thank you LIBERALS!!! Thanks for cuddling the they grow up without a spine.......BOO FRAKIN HOO. This stupid liberal adgenda is going to ruin this county. Are there any other countries that do stupid things like this?!?

12:12:45 AM ferretman: Thank you LIBERALS!!!

2005-04-04 12:18:13 AM
I used to hand in essays written in red ink (or whatever other colour I could find) when I was in high school. My teacher then marked in blue. It was actually kinda weird seeing 3 or 4 pages of text in red. I hated essay tests.

/only uses mechanical pencils now
2005-04-04 12:18:40 AM

You're my hero.

We can't give D's of F's. We can't put a letter on a paper that's lower than a C.

I teach 3rd grade, and I wear out a red pen a week. And you know what?

2005-04-04 12:19:10 AM
AbsolutTBomb: Everyone knows that 2 + 2 equals 22!

Tooty-two? Of course.
2005-04-04 12:21:00 AM
oh good, liberal bashing, should be a pleasant from conservative bashing.

has anyone actually met a true die-hard liberal/conservative in real life?
2005-04-04 12:21:03 AM
Thank you LIBERALS!!! Thanks for cuddling coddling the they grow up without a spine.......BOO FRAKIN FREAKIN' HOO. This stupid liberal adgenda agenda is going to ruin this county country. Are there any other countries that do stupid things like this?!?

See me after class.
2005-04-04 12:24:48 AM

Hey! My family is from your home town!

//loves Buffalo

2005-04-04 12:25:10 AM
Fantastic_Dan: See me after class.

That's not nice of you to stress ferretman out like that. Funny, but not nice.

Thank you LIBERALS!!! Thanks for cuddling coddling the they grow up without a spine.......BOO FRAKIN FREAKIN' HOO. This stupid liberal adgenda agenda is going to ruin this county country. Are there any other countries that do stupid things like this?!?

See? Isn't that better for everyone?
2005-04-04 12:25:40 AM
memorizing is not o.k.

it just means that you suck balls as a teacher
2005-04-04 12:26:32 AM

great minds.....
2005-04-04 12:26:54 AM
At Public School 188 in Manhattan, 25-year-old teacher Justin Kazmark grades with purple, which has emerged as a new color of choice for many educators, pen manufacturers confirm.

Oh god, please no...

QQue, I'm not saying your headline wasn't funny :p Just not any more than the current headline. Now, an article about an exploding duct tape factory I would like to read.
2005-04-04 12:30:09 AM
My work in school (in Japan) was always marked in either red or orange.

In fact we had to practice calligraphy in school, and even that on the practice ones the teacher would paint over it to show how yours could be better, and used special reddish orange ink for that.

I tutor people now from time to time and I mark in whatever color pen I happen to have that contrasts with pencil. Usually it's orange or bright pink.

It doesn't do anyone a favor to not point out their mistakes, because how will they know to fix them? Better only the teacher knows and you fix it before writing in public!
