It's a sad reflection of our society when we have more protection for animals than for people.

Againify- toddlers get into antifreeze too sometimes, and when all else fails (an unusually bright and inquisitive one comes along and figures out how to open the cabinets, for instance), it's good to have a backup. Yee haw!

I won't call you an asshat because I'm goin' to assume you just didn't think about the kids.

What will they use to thin out the herd of stray cats and keep those damn kids off their lawns?

okay, I fail to see how this is going to work real well.

Ethylene glycol -- the stuff that makes most antifreeze work -- is the same stuff that makes it taste/smell! sweet.

Propylene glycol, while it may work about as well and be safe, is flammable, IIRC.

As long as I can still smell the difference between raw fuel coming out the exhaust and coolant coming out the exaust, I'm fine with it I guess.

This is a good thing! It is a horrible way to have a dog die! I hope this law spreads throughout the land, or becomes a federal law... Or better yet; the companies just decide to just make all the antifreeze products they ship anywhere bitter or unattractive to animals.

As I was saying:

Natural gas has additives to give it its distinctive odor (methane is odorless); this is actually quite brilliant. Props to whoever in the New Mexico government actually listened to a good idea.

If anyone is curious, Ethylene Glycol is lethal due to the fact that, after a bunch of complicated chemistry, it causes tiny, sharp crystals to form in the blood stream, causing all sorts of harm to fine capilary beds, wich are most common in the retina and kidneys.

I think there are way too many laws already, and am for smaller government.

But this law sounds great, since it will cost next to nothing to implement, and would prevent tons of deaths per year.

I have a friend who tried to commit suicide by drinking antifreeze, she failed due to intervention by her parents, but on the upside she claims she's never been so drunk.

Big Nosed Chris
Am I the only person to find it funny that they said the dog had to be DESTROYED?

That's the term they use when they "put down" or KILL an animal. It's usually applied to animals that have done something wrong (or have been convicted for biting a human that was farking around with it, and therefore are percieved as doing something wrong). "Put down" is far more common among animals that have medical issues and will otherwise live for only a brief, excrutiating time otherwise.

As for the foul-tasting antifreeze, FINALLY.

I had two cats who were in a car which had about a quarter cup of antifreeze spilled under a seat. It has no smell to humans, so it was not discovered. The cats came out from under the seat where they had been hiding (scared out of their minds, they were being removed from my house which had just become unlivable due to fire damage), and were dirty as all get-out. They were washed off, but the damage was already done, they'd licked at the antifreeze and were in renal failure the following day.

Both had to be put down after they drifted in and out of comas for the next 24 hours.

Antifreeze is one of the most poisonous substances that most household/cars have on a regular basis, and it seems to taste to cats and dogs about the same as hard candy tastes to human beings.

Simple add a can of this to every jug and nothing will touch it.>

And to those that claim it to be the ower's fault for their cat getting into antifreeze, you have to realize something. My grandmother had an outdoor cat. Her neighbor had just finished working on his car, and there was a pan of anti-freeze in his driveway. Yeah so her cat is dead now, but not under her own fault.
2005-04-02 07:16:54 PM
Actually it's not a bad idea. Disney's Animal Kingdom went through a shiatload of animals when they first opened when they drank anti-freeze.

This is ridiculous, and will lead to FRIVOLOUS LAWSUITS. Whatever happened to PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY in this country?

Keep your OWN STUPID PET away from the antifreeze instead of demanding that EVERYONE PAY EXTRA because you are TOO LAZY mind your own pet.

This country is going to hell.

One very important question. Who is going to taste it to see if its bitter or sweet? How will they know unless someone tastes it?

I know, let's get Mikey to try it!
