That is one of the best stories I've read in a while. Where could one purchase a pair of these? Wow, that would be comedy gold.

This is a real story, right?
2005-02-17 11:48:30 AM
Did no one try them on before they bought them?
2005-02-17 12:01:21 PM
I actually had a pair of shoes that started making that sound. I thought it was great. My friends thought is was not so great.

From the article: "For months, Goosebumps tried in vain to figure out what was causing the air bubbles and the embarrassing sounds. . . .For a time, it blamed a manufacturing employee, but when he was replaced, the problem remained, Thomas said."

So did they give the man his job back?
2005-02-17 05:08:07 PM
sweet...farts are funny

/tried to find a pic of 'the eternal flame' from Freaked, but there was none...
2005-02-17 05:08:57 PM
So now instead of blaming the dog I can say it was my shoes???
2005-02-17 05:09:41 PM
You're sitting on a gold mine, Trebek.
2005-02-17 05:10:13 PM

2005-02-17 05:12:04 PM

Whats the finger for?
2005-02-17 05:12:04 PM
They should take a pair to mars.
2005-02-17 05:12:33 PM
"For a time, it blamed a manufacturing employee, but when he was replaced, the problem remained, Thomas said."

What's that strange odour? It's familiar, if only I could place it.

Thats it, i smell a lawsuit from an ex-employee
2005-02-17 05:12:40 PM
I once sued my belt maker because it came with malfunctioning Pinchers of Power!
2005-02-17 05:13:29 PM

They're sitting on a goldmine and they don't even realize it.
2005-02-17 05:14:39 PM
They threw the shoes away...idiots.
Any gift or joke shop would gladly have stocked these.
2005-02-17 05:14:59 PM
Rev. Skarekroe: They're sitting on a goldmine and they don't even realize it.

Make em for kids sizes and you got a million seller
2005-02-17 05:15:46 PM
I had a pair of Nike Airs that did the same thing after awhile. 2 sections held air, separated by a thin wall of plastic. The plastic eventually broke, so the air would go back-and-forth between the 2 chambers. Elevators were great (rocking back-and-forth.)

** Goddess Of Athiesm **
Of course they didn't give the guy his job back! He was just PART of the problem! (since when has a manager EVER admitted that they had made a mistake?)
2005-02-17 05:16:31 PM
So this is a classic example of small-minded business thinking.

Instead of throwing away the 35,000 pairs of whoopie cushioned insoles, they need to relabel them so that the sounds are a feature and then raise the price.

You just know there are people out there who will buy the things.

Because, after all, a fart is just a joke that comes out your ass.
2005-02-17 05:17:57 PM
Those shoes are gonna be worth big bucks.

I know just the guy who can sell them.
2005-02-17 05:19:20 PM
For a time, it blamed a manufacturing employee, but when he was replaced, the problem remained, Thomas said.

Jeeze, sucks for the poor guy they fired; I wonder if he will sue to get his job back.
2005-02-17 05:19:39 PM
My sneakers make squeaky farting sounds when I walk in them, but that may be due to being 5 years old and in a state of moderate disintegration.
2005-02-17 05:20:05 PM
The company had to throw away at least 35,000 pairs, said attorneys Robert W. Anthony and William H. Beaver II.

That cost the company $200,000 to $250,000, the lawyers said.

shows you what type of markup these shoe manufacturers have, whats that like 3.50 a shoe
2005-02-17 05:20:50 PM
I bet they sound just like it does when you have a big one waiting in line, and you start to jog or run and every step is like a small explosion.
2005-02-17 05:21:36 PM

What's the ex-employee going to sue for? Unless he was a contract employee, he was only employed "at will".

Still sucks and the company was wrong, but he doesn't have any LEGAL claim, as far as I see.
2005-02-17 05:22:09 PM
Ive been using that same "shoe" excuse for years, noone ever belived me.
2005-02-17 05:24:49 PM
I wonder what noise Fark-sounding shoes would make.
2005-02-17 05:24:59 PM
My old running shoes do this all the time. I had one pair that was loud enough to force my boss ask me not to wear them to work ever again.
2005-02-17 05:25:20 PM
employee could have just been reassigned, replaced does not nessesarily mean taken out back and shot.
2005-02-17 05:33:29 PM
sorry to be teh html lame guy, but you can find their insoles here: http://www.goosebumps.net/insoles.html

still looking for a pic of the shoes... this takes care of Christmas presents for my entire family
2005-02-17 05:33:35 PM
why didnt they donate the 35,000 pairs of shoes? it coulda been a tax write off, oh wait, thats right, they want to make a killing with the lawsuit.... the all mighty dollar. what a waste materials.
2005-02-17 05:34:41 PM

I think this guy was wearing them.

Every pair of Nikes I've owned starts making these sounds in 3-6 months when the air chambers start leaking. I haven't owned a pair in years because of it. If I spend $100 on a pair of shoes I don't want them making fart noises when I walk, especially when they're only a few months old. Now I pay half the price for another brand and can keep them much longer. It's not just the small shoe companies that need to fix this problem.

/ Maybe give the kids in the sweatshop an extra penny or something.
2005-02-17 05:39:17 PM
They don't make shoes, just the insoles, Salmon. Nowhere in the article does it actually say they make shoes.

Which also explains why people didn't notice in the store. You don't try on insoles, you just buy your size and/or trim them to fit.

RTFA carefully.
2005-02-17 05:41:27 PM
Who makes the shoes?
- Goosebumps Products Inc. of Longwood.

I can find one company named Goosebumps Products Inc. but they are not in longwood they are in Winter Park, FL see here: In the Superpages Directory

Goosebumps blames eight drums of glycerine delivered by Bell Chem Corp. of Longwood in late 2002 and early 2003.

These those have probably been in a Longwood / Winter park garbage for at least 2 years.
2005-02-17 05:42:17 PM
so do you think the insoles on their site are the ones in question, then MessyGirl?

I have more than a few relatives that could really use such insoles...
2005-02-17 05:43:48 PM
I would assume so, Salmon, but it appears they are no longer being sold. I'm pretty sure they mentioned throwing the offending insoles away. They're probably in that landfill with the old Atari cartridges.
2005-02-17 05:45:12 PM
Yep, I have a pair of Nikes in which the right shoe does this. But people give me a wide berth so I kinda like it.
2005-02-17 05:45:55 PM
It says they are INSOLES not SHOES.
2005-02-17 05:46:55 PM
there once was a guy who wore shoes
when he walked he he heard snickers and boos
with each step that he took
it caused people to look
and wonder what was in his refuse.
