thats a lot of cash.
2002-03-10 09:19:06 PM
he is not worth that, I don't think he even hit .300 last year.
2002-03-10 09:19:12 PM
conan owns letterman and he only make 2-3 million a year last time i checked.

whichever network gets him is still a sucker.
2002-03-10 09:19:18 PM
As the article tries to point out...it's not necessarily the money with Dave...he's got enough money to last him quite a long time. CBS has regularly let him down in terms of promotion, etc.

Not that ABC could do any better...but...maybe worth a shot.
2002-03-10 09:20:35 PM
$31.5 million per year!?!?!
Letterman isn't even funny.
2002-03-10 09:21:06 PM
dave letterman moves to abc.
john stewart moves to cbs.
stephen colbert takes over the Daily Show.

Leno still sucks.
2002-03-10 09:21:10 PM
How about Letterman jumping to ABC, Leno goes to CBS and Conan can finally get the spot he deserves (Since he wouldn't fit in at CBS and ABC).
2002-03-10 09:23:47 PM
Letterman USED to be really funny.

He should move to Comedy Central with some good writers and I bet he could tear all three of the bigs a new arseshooter.
2002-03-10 09:24:00 PM
I agree with everything that everyone has said so far.
2002-03-10 09:24:45 PM
The thing is: Who's line is it anyway sucked worse after Disney bought ABC.....

I don't think CBS really cares one way or the other, but ABC might have him "tone down" some of his jokes. Or maybe not? I'm not sure, but whatever is best for Dave. He's the man!
2002-03-10 09:24:46 PM
I think Letterman would be really funny making fun of ABC too.
2002-03-10 09:26:04 PM
dave is awesome, but conan is the king. yes, and leno does suck. goat testicles.
2002-03-10 09:27:42 PM
I just agree that Conan 0wnz, and he's perfect where he is... if they moved him to Leno's spot, they'd PC him to death!

Oh, and bring back Andy! Don't get me wrong though, he's still funny without his sidekick, just not quite...
2002-03-10 09:27:52 PM
I'd like to see Letterman, Conan, and Stewart do some kind of special together. Kilbourne(spell?) sucks, Leno sucks.

Anybody remember that time Letterman went back to Los Angeles for that Late Show Special? He filled up his convertable with Taco's (thousands) and just started driving around....comedy gold.
2002-03-10 09:27:58 PM
Just more proof that money makes the world go round and that greed has no limits.
As for moving hosts and shows around...

Letterman to ABC
Leno to CBS, the bottom of the barrel where he belongs (sorry, but Leno has lost all appeal to me)
Conan to Leno's old spot, where he belongs
Stewart to NBC, where Conan was before being put up to the late-nite primetime slot.
And, for some dumbass reason, put Andy Richter (you know, Conan's former co-host), on Comedy Central for his own show to replace Stewart. Or just shove someone else in there for no apparant reason.

That idea may be crazy, but it just might work. Just remember to shift them all around again in about 5 years time to keep them fresh and from whining too much about contract negotiations. :P
2002-03-10 09:29:00 PM
I think Letterman is worth it....only one that comes close, and some prolly haven't heard of him-he's a west coaster)... is Craig Kilborn..... Conan's dumb...I've never thought he was funny, and he looks like Corky.

Craig Kilborn's funny has hell...he's on the "Late , Late Show" .... after Letterman..

and yes, 43%.... Leno does suck, plain and simple

2002-03-10 09:29:54 PM
Lewis Black needs his own show with Mo Rocca as a co host.
2002-03-10 09:37:37 PM
To put this in perspective, Letterman does a couple hundred shows a year, while the Friends cast get $1 million EACH to do 25 episodes. Yes, Letterman's getting 1/10th the ratings, but he's asking for much less than 1/10th the Friends talent budget on a per show basis.

And my fearless late-night prediction, should Dave move:
Dateline to CBS. Boring, I know, but that show beats the hell out of everyone but Dave and Jay in the ratings.
2002-03-10 09:38:17 PM
Oops, obviously I meant Nightline.
2002-03-10 09:44:03 PM
I have to agree Vegasj Craig Kilborn, funny.

David Letterman used to be funny. Every once in awhile he will get a chuckle outta me. I think he deserves everything he can get. After all he got screwed by NBC. He should've had the Tonight show!

And yeah, Leno sucks!
2002-03-10 09:44:11 PM
Move me to ABC, I'll do it for only 20 mill. I'd suck but they'd save a buck or two. But I'd definitiely have Reel Big Fish as the house band - couldn't be that bad.
2002-03-10 09:49:53 PM
I second Lewis Black getting his own show, I think it would work out real well if it was on HBO or something, so they could let him stay true to his act.

"It if wasn't for my horse..."
2002-03-10 09:52:54 PM
I think as part of Dave's contract negotiations he is most assuredly demanding not to have to do those stupid Survivor interviews. I can't wait to see where he sticks them this time since they were all the way out in the Deli across the street last time around...
2002-03-10 09:55:07 PM
I like the Letterman to ABC, Stewart to CBS, Colbert takes over The Daily Show idea.. If anyone on that cast can take over the show, Steven can.
2002-03-10 10:52:05 PM
I bet if the Daily Show did lose Jon Stewart to a major network, which would be their second lost host, they'd replace him with some chick who wouldn't be as funny, like on Win Ben Stein's Money. And it would suck.
2002-03-10 10:56:58 PM
2002-03-10 10:58:21 PM
Worldwide Pants.... what a name
2002-03-10 11:06:49 PM
Dave's actually moving to Fox to revive Chuck Woolery's old show Greed.

2002-03-10 11:29:09 PM
Lewis Black is funny for about a minute, then, I find myself wanting to look his address up online so I can go find his house, and pee on it.
2002-03-10 11:59:38 PM
Okay. I guess I don't understand..

This is asinine because he still might leave CBS for ABC, even though he'll get the same amount of money? What's wrong with that?
2002-03-11 12:58:54 AM
Dave to ABC. CBS signs Leno. NBC brings Larry Sanders outta retirement. Fox gets into the game by signing Jon Stewart. WB brings back Carsenio. And UPN signs the 6th Wayans brother.

Pat Sajak and Alan Thicke are still outta the late night game.
2002-03-11 01:20:15 AM
And elsewhere on CBS, the 9/11 documentary. France totally doesn't surrender.
2002-03-11 01:27:52 AM
Stars out of 5 (I do it different than Ebert)

Conan O'Brien ****
Not afraid to make himself look stupid and often does.
Highly intelligent, easy going, doesn't get bitter or attack guests. Sometimes the skits seem like performance art which is good. Not afraid to try anything and doesn't beat a skit to death if it works.

John Stewart ***
Other than being not quite as smart and keen, and Jewish instead of Irish, See above. Has a bright future.

David Letterman **
Used to be like the current Conan, but now the opposite in every facet.

Jay Leno **
Good at what he does, but I guess I'm not a fan of People Magazine and T.V. Guide comedy.

Craig Kilborne *
As A. Whitney Brown once said about him, "The world ends at his skin." But I guess what else would you expect from an ex-ESPN jock. Smarmy, smug, and self important.

Yeah, everything's funny on pot isn't it
2002-03-11 01:46:04 AM
Funny thing is...

When Snyder left, there were two guys in mind for "The Late Late Show." Behind Kilborn? Stewart, of course.
2002-03-11 02:36:16 AM
Letterman is the farkin' KING.He's influenced more comedians and writers in the last 20 years than anyone else.

Conan (very funny) wouldn't exist without Letterman because he does a carbon copy of Letterman's old NBC show.Letterman can read a phone book and make it funny, no one else with a show can do that.

Conan brings the cool tunes, though.

Letterman isn't going anywhere, he just wanted to show CBS he has options. The guy is smart, that's why he gets the big bucks.Conan's getting 8 million a year now BTW, he just signed a new contract. My job, though, still sucks.

All-time fav Conan bit was when Conan found out his show was on at 3AM in Houston, so he went to Houston to find out what everybody does from 12:30AM to 3AM.A friggin' classic bit. Also, Andy Richter (sorely missed) at Woodstock playing in the mud.Does Conan still do "If They Mated"?I haven't seen that one in a while.

Too many Letterman favorites to pick from.If I get started I won't be able to stop.
2002-03-11 02:51:55 AM
I can't believe anyone would think Craig Kilborne is funnier than Conan... I hate Kilborne with a passion, he is the exact opposite of funny while Conan, on the other hand, is funnier than Letterman and Leno combined.

But Leno isn't bad, I don't know why everyone doesn't like it. He's better than Letterman in my opinion, and letterman is good too.

Summary: Kilborne is such a farking loser...
2002-03-11 03:10:18 AM
Conan is definitely the best, I'd like to see him in Leno's slot. I still enjoy Leno, certainly more than Letterman, who is one of the most unfunny comedians on earth (Arsenio Hall takes the cake on that one). I like Stewart, and haven't seen enough of post-ESPN Kilbourn to make a judgement.
2002-03-11 03:33:04 AM
Conan has almost been around for 10 years. Wow, huh?

I stopped watched Conan, a few months after Andy left. The jokes were awkward, the audience barely laughed, Conan was too self-depreciating, to the point you felt sorry for him. But lately I've been trying to catch him and he has really improved and I can see why people say he's the best now.

I think Letterman should run, not walk to ABC. CBS knows shiat about marketing the Late Show. Whenever they run a commercial for it, it's Dave smiling . . smiling . . smiling like a jackass. Letterman's humour is cynical, absurd and very, very acerbic . . . not super happy hour. An ABC move would be fresh, new, and exciting. Another plus: Politically Incorrect would get cancelled. I don't mind the show, love the concept but Bill Maher is an elitest asswipe who talks over his guests.

And aw, Leno is okay. Seems like a nice guy but it depends what you makes you laugh.

Whatever you do, don't watch Mike Bullard. He's like Killborn, Pat Sajak, and Keenan Ivory rolled into a dump of crappiness. Just my opinion.

Where's the little fat dude?

Anyone catch "Late World with Zach"?

Not too bad for Vh1.

Barneyfifesbullet: Steve Allen and Johnny Carson defined the
genre not David Lettermen.
2002-03-11 06:31:13 AM
Letterman is just a money grabbing pig, someone should give him tip, the tip of a 7.62mm to the head.
2002-03-11 09:09:47 AM
i remember the funny letterman bits like 'can a guy in a bear suit steal a watermelon?' and the time he kept driving in circles around the mcdonalds drive thru but that was almost 10 years ago.. it got stupid right about the time he got denied the tonight show 'cuz his last couple of shows on nbc sucked too..
2002-03-11 09:45:58 AM
$31.5 million.....THIRTY ONE AND A HALF MILLION!
2002-03-11 01:21:05 PM
Barneyfifesbullet: Steve Allen and Johnny Carson defined the
genre not David Lettermen.

I didn't say he had.I said that Letterman is the most influential tv comic of the last 20 years.

Ask around.
2002-03-11 01:25:46 PM
Fire Kilborn and hire Kenny Mayne for that job.

I must have Chris Elliot back on my screen.
2002-03-11 04:50:43 PM
If they gave Howard Stern a late night talk show, he would mop the floors with all of them. Howard gives better no-holds barred interviews than anyone in the business. He makes interviews with people like Frank Stallone compelling. The best shows Letterman or Leno ever had were when Stern was the guest.
