Well the ground is like concrete and so the water has to go somewhere... thing about those rivers is they would be full if places like L.A. weren't sucking the Colorado River dry before it get's far enough south!

Only some of Arizona is a desert?

As a non-native AZ fan, I've notices that the state has a skewed image outside the western US. Basically everyone who hasn't been there thinks it's like SE California/Mojave Desert everywhere. One you get a little out of the Valley (30-60 min north of PHX), you climb pretty high and get a lot more temperate and pleasant weather.

The areas around Flagstaff and Sedona is some of the most beautiful land in the US, if not the world (and 4,500 to 7,000 feet ASL). I'm planning to hike the GC rim-river-rim and Mt. Humphreys (~13,200') in June, and that covers everything from barren desert to high alpine forest.

They are always saying that we're in a drought and yet they continue to build new homes and swimming pools. Just an excuse to raise the water rates each summer.

You should see the people drive while it's raining! I have yet to drive on any road at any time of day while it's raining and not see at least one accident. Of course, these drivers suck during normal conditions...

Could you imagine if snow actually hit the metropolitan area? I'd hate to see how they'd drive then.

I did the rim-river-rim hike a couple of years ago. What a great experience but I would think twice about doing it in June. We did the hike at the end of September, and we burned up. Then again if it keeps raining and the rivers keep flowing the way they are the Colorado may be much closer than before.

I wish I was in Tempe to see the Salt River flow.

Here's how you know you're acclimated to southern Arizona:
1. You pick parking spots bassed on shade, distance be damned.
2. You do not associate bridges or rivers with water.
3. You tell anyone who says "it's a dry heat" to stick their head in an oven, since that's a dry heat too.
4. You know why we don't have Daylight Savings Time: It's freakin' hot enough at 9pm - we don't need the sun out as well.

When Oracle gets snow (1/2 inch!) they will delay school up to two hours so that the kids can see it. I drove up Mt. Lemon once and the guard told us that we could only drive up so far due to the snow so I asked him how much they got. Since he said we needed chains I was thinking several feet of snow up there. Nope. Chains are required with 6 inches of snow!

I used to go up to Mt. Lemmon and have snowball fights with friends... then we'd go back to town and it was in the 80s...

I loved the storm the other night. First it was raining forever then hailing then the clouds were swirling around us and it was soooo quiet. Then the tornado warnings came. I imagine if a tornado touched down all the houses would be destroyed. I mean they are made out of styrofoam and chicken wire. Most people here in az dont have the slightest clue as to where to hide if one did hit.

i was driving doing nothing on the shores of Great Salt Lake
when they put it on the air i put it in the hammer lane
i soon forgot myself and i forgot about the brake
i forgot all laws and i forgot about the rain
they were talking on the 9 and all across the army band
across the road they were turning around and headed south with me
it got so crowded on the road i started driving in the sand
my head was feeling scared but my heart was feeling free
the desert turned to mud it seems that everybody heard
everybody was remembering to forget they had the chills
then i heard the voices on a broadcast from up on the bird
they were getting interviewed by some Goodman whose name was Bill
i'm almost there to Vegas where they're puttin' on a show
they've come so far i've lived this long at least i must go and say hello

It snowed in Tucson my first year in AZ. Color me shocked... I blamed everything that year on El Nino. Even my not so great grades...

One of my favorite scenic moments was after we'd spent the night at Phantom Ranch in TGC, we awoke to 60 degree temps, and could see it snowing blizzard-like at the rim of the canyon. The mule ride back up was scary as hell, because the mules would occasionally slide on ice near the top.

I lived right by the town lake while I was at grad school. I arrived a year too late to see the last flood that took out the Mill Ave. bridge. Now I live in Columbus Ohio, which is also under a significant amount of water, and once again have missed seeing the AZ floods. I miss AZ with a passion and can't wait to move back.

I think it was nearly 10 years ago we got this scale of rain. I forget what year it was but it was long before tempe town lake. the salt was flowing up to the top, couple bridges washed out I wanna say mid 90's but that was the last time I can remember the salt river running

And it did snow here like 7 or 8 years ago in mid afternoon. 'bout .5 inch stuck to the ground. predictably there were numerous traffic accidents.
