I think those eagles in Mordor would be a helluva lot heavier than 33 lbs.
2005-01-05 11:42:27 AM
Let the eagle fly
Like she's never flown before
2005-01-05 01:38:08 PM
So LOTR was based on fact?
2005-01-05 01:43:03 PM
I thought those birds were called rocs.
2005-01-05 07:18:06 PM
(golf clap for the submitter)

Subtract TO, and they're a .500 team.
2005-01-05 08:00:33 PM
/me starts reading article
/me sees mention of the Butchery of the Rings

2005-01-05 08:01:39 PM
Before T.O. they went 12-4 last year, so your point was?
2005-01-05 08:01:42 PM
Does anyone remember who or what was that blue version of big bird on sesame street?
2005-01-05 08:03:36 PM
OH, JUST A GREAT BIG F*CK YOU TO THE SUBMITTER, who is probably a fan of the lowly [insert any other NFC team here]
2005-01-05 08:03:43 PM
maybe the submitter was thinking of chickens and kittens...
2005-01-05 08:03:51 PM

/Actually, great headline, but that's what a Philly fan would say. About pretty much anything.
2005-01-05 08:05:25 PM
hahahaha story - if ever I saw a crappy story submitted purely for the headline - this was it
2005-01-05 08:06:32 PM
At least the Eagles are pretty damn good every year, and win most of the time. Not many are as consistently very good.

/yearns for greatness
2005-01-05 08:06:48 PM
Umm, what about the huge pterosaurs??? Some of those had a wingspan of 40-50 feet.
2005-01-05 08:06:54 PM
BOOO EAGLES!! GO BUCS!! #5 pick in the draft!! YEAH!!!
2005-01-05 08:06:55 PM
pffft, i'm from new zealand and i'm telling you those birds arent extinct.

KFC here rules!
2005-01-05 08:07:57 PM
Nice headline. Golf clap.

2005-01-05 08:10:07 PM
Now if 33 pound turkeys could fly.... (oops)
2005-01-05 08:12:05 PM
GO FINS #2 pick in draft. YEAH! If we beat Cleveland and have the same record as them why would strenght of schedule determine whos comes before who. Just some common logic.

Hey MACG chill out. When ya get to the Super Bowl then ya can go ram a pole up your ass and go have a fit.
2005-01-05 08:12:30 PM
ok now that headline was just not funny

/diehard EAGLES fan since 1974
2005-01-05 08:14:00 PM
Who gives a shiat about football?

/Embarrassed Niners fan.
2005-01-05 08:14:00 PM
Submitter owes me a new keyboard.

/Go Bengals, next year the playoffs, Eagle meat tastes like chicken
2005-01-05 08:24:15 PM
Ravens > Eagles. I don't recall any great poetry that involved an eagle. Also, Ray Lewis will kill T.O.--literally.

Great Headline!

Props to submitter
2005-01-05 08:29:51 PM
I like any headline that belittles the iggles.

New York Football Giants: Undefeated in 2005 baby!
2005-01-05 08:30:20 PM
that's an awesome headline. lol

besides, falcons pwn eagles anyways
2005-01-05 08:32:17 PM
Awesome. This was totally a covert call for an NFL thread. I missed the playoffs one... Sorta LIKE my giants.

Meh....still... 2005! Whoo!

(By the way, if the Jets can't win, I want any NFC team besides the Eagles to win. We're not any worse...
2005-01-05 08:33:00 PM
lerxst2112 , in reality, I wish the submitter only the best. I'm just having some fun. Clever headline, well played.
2005-01-05 08:34:56 PM
As a resident of central Pennsylvania we're a mix of Steeler and Eagle fans.

I'm more of a Steeler fan but the only time I cheer against the Eagles is when they play the Steelers. So, I'm hoping for a Pittsburgh-Philadelphia Superbowl.

Now I need the Eagles to somehow beat the rest of the Not-really Football Conference.
2005-01-05 08:36:13 PM
What is this "upper limit of body weight for flight"?

Any crazy billionaire with Kleenex boxes on his feet could tell you to just increase the wing size as you increase the body size.

Is there a point of diminishing, or vanishing, return in birds?
2005-01-05 08:37:53 PM
I bet a die hard Eagles fan in August-after getting d@mm sick 'n tired of his ranting 'n raving about how goooood the Eagles were going to be with T.O. Once again, the classic Philly Choke-a-Rama is now unfolding. I took pity on the poor bastard, and did'nt bet him too much-$20.00 bucks-but what I gets is...gloating rights!!!! Eagles Suck. Just too pit-ti-full for words!

/Oh, an' too bad those genetically giant eagles now are part of the Darwin Awards.......envelope please.....

/One ticket-Window seat.....with a NICE view of the flames....
2005-01-05 08:38:32 PM

So LOTR was based on fact?

Hence the "would be," dillhole.

Cool, awesome headline.

Oh yeah, Go Eagles. Farkin' haters...
2005-01-05 08:45:19 PM
Haasts eagle was vast, with a wingspan of up to 3m (9ft 10in) and a weight of 15kg (33lb),

so what? That's no bigger than current eagles and condors:

Falconiforms vary from tiny falconets (Microhierax), weighing 35 grams (1.2 ounces) or less, to huge vultures and eagles with weights up to 14 kilograms (31 pounds)

...extremes are the Andean condor (10 to 14 kilograms, wingspan three to 3.35 metres)...
2005-01-05 08:48:00 PM
It swooped at up to 50mph, grasping the hindquarters of the flightless moa, killing it by inflicting crushing wounds.

Ha! Death by assgrab!
2005-01-05 08:50:35 PM
A seahawk can beat an Eagle right?
2005-01-05 08:55:45 PM
Is there a point of diminishing, or vanishing, return in birds?

If you keep the proportions the same, wing area goes up as the square of the wingspan but mass goes up as the cube. It's the same reason you won't get insects the size of elephants -- since they respire through tracheal tubes in their skin (whose surface area goes up as the square of the size), but the number of cells that need oxygen goes up as the cube of the size, they would suffocate and their limbs would be crushed.
2005-01-05 08:56:06 PM
All you jealous NFC guys can kiss it. Go birds!
2005-01-05 08:57:06 PM
"Ha! Death by assgrab!"
Ok, the rest of you can stop now, Mr Bale has won the thread.
2005-01-05 08:58:21 PM
Jets fan here who can't wait for Hackett to be canned, making Herm one step closer to the door!
2005-01-05 08:59:53 PM
That just rocs.

(Yes, I know, 8 hours too late. Cursed TFers.)
2005-01-05 09:00:03 PM
Er, in my explanation I meant that insects would suffocate. Birds would just be flightless unless they got truly enormous.
2005-01-05 09:08:19 PM
Too bad the Lions didn't go extinct

/happless Detroit team that is
2005-01-05 09:08:40 PM

I can't even do it.

Spruce Goose?
2005-01-05 09:18:17 PM
Seriously, I am really wondering about my previous, on-subject, question. But, if this is destined to become and NFL thread, here goes.

Freewheelin' Franklin Sez...
Offense will get you through times of no defense better than defense will get you through times of no offense.

This is as true of the NFL as it is of Mediaeval seiges or woman problems.

Therefore, Indy. They can match anyone in the NFL point for point, they only need a defense for the one point that puts them over.
2005-01-05 09:20:45 PM
E - A - G - L - E - S EAGLES!
