Some idiot likely saw the opportunity to get the whole van instead of grabbing packages of a porch.  Except he didn't think his cunning plan all the way through.  A delivery van is going to be noticed within minutes, so you better have a place to stash iat close by if you want any chance of getting away with the theft.

I think he meant you'd better have a vehicle waiting to offload the stuff and ditch the van.
