Yeah, super new.
Nobody ever robbed a place with 6 people all at once before.
This is a real innovation in crime.

Every 7-11 has limited the number of kids that can enter at one time since the '90s or earlier.   Probably way earlier.

This is not a new thing.  It's been happening in the San Francisco Bay Area for a number of years, though they typically hit something with more selection than a 7-11.  There hasn't been an incident for a few months, though.  At least not one that has made the news.

In that case, how did six young parasites happen to get in the store at once?

Not sure how to "limit" the number of people entering at once without cutting legs off.

You must be new to Fark then. Because around here, this isn't happening. It's just the media trying to fearmonger, IIRC. Or the GOP making crime look higher than it is. Oh yeah, it's also been blamed on the shopping industry trying to raise prices.

But whatever the reason, apparently these mass robberies are just "fake news".

Usually these are locations near schools and malls, but I saw more than one where they actually had someone at the door.

You're right. There's absolutely no police presence in Midtown Manhattan. It's dangerous here. Stay away.

Yesterday was St Patrick's Day. With the higher than usual influx of yob tourists, this is a doddle. The source of this story is 1010WINS, which used to carry Don Imus and still spews right wing scaremongering. Scroll down on this article and you'll find a host of salacious stories about youths of color rampaging around the city.

Obviously this one didn't have a limit. This could have been prevented simply by putting a sign on the door that said "2 juvenile limit".

I suspect that to most reporters anything that isn't a Harley is a moped. Like everything that fires a bullet is an assault rifle.

I admit I may just be in the wrong here, but emotionally speaking, I support store owners going all Korean store owner style on mobs when this happens.   I mean, high capacity magazines get a bad rap, but they're built for this sort of thing :P

Actually a cop, no less, came up with a theory he named C.R.A.V.E. his theory was that media and peers push each other to steal. So much so that you could track what will be stolen by what was trending in pop culture.  I will never forget this. Especially considering it came from a person I would normally dismiss.
So chew on that buddy.

No. That's not what I said. I said people steal because of media, peers, and pop culture.
Summing that up as entitlement.  Ignores the outside forces at play.
For example, people in my circle of friends/family need me to have a cellphone more than I personally need one.
And other example, is i don't personally need a car. But, I live in a society that is very car centered.

And thing is, outside forces drive theft/stealing.  If we remove outside forces theft and stealing would be reduced to an alarming amount.  To the point that it could be tracked.  It wouldn't be a rounding error. It would actually effect quarterly earnings in a visible amount.  And could not be brushed off.

See the TP run of 2020.
See the fark with a storage locker of hand  Sanitizer. Sure those wasn't stealing.  But it's the same outside pressure.
Society loves to push individuals and then cry victim.

Seems like that kind of defeats the whole purpose of not allowing more than X number of people in the first place.

No society on Earth has managed to make theft a non-issue.  Even animals display theft behavior along with a theory of mind, so that they are watching whether another animal is watching them.

The only ways to get rid of theft are:
1) Give an item no value, so it's not worth stealing. Value is largely set by social agreement, either by fiat (eg, art or diamonds) or because of a real shortage in light of commodification (eg, oil and platinum). However, a capitalist society operates on principles of scarcity and this is essential to its continued stability.

2) Make the cost of theft much higher than the benefit to be gained. This includes traditional penalties as well as building social trust between people. If you know someone who will lend you their car or credit card then there's enough of a social trust relationship there so that they don't think you will steal from them.

3) Give people a sense of mutual ownership. Why would you steal it if it's already "yours"?  You wouldn't steal a streetlight and sell it for scrap, because that streetlight is paid for with your tax dollars and serves the purpose of providing enough light for you or others at night.  You wouldn't steal your own house, car, etc.

Of course, all of these break down when a drug addiction enters the picture. A serious drug addiction basically resets people's priorities to where getting drugs is the main, overarching, all-consuming priority and nothing else farking matters.  I'm pretty sure drugs are the leading cause of theft in the West today.

There's various ideas about how to address this - provide clean drugs while providing treatment options, for example, which works in the Netherlands but isn't politically palatable yet in the US and other areas of Europe.  Still, I'm curious about the drawbacks.
