I don't have a dog in this fight; where are you from that has better metro services than the Northeastern corridor?

Do you have plans to improve service?

Great.  So now for much less money, when New York City is just to dull and uninteresting, you can take in the epic night life of Philly, or even better, Baltimore.

Actually, travel between Philly and NYC isn't a problem, your can take local trains if you know the Trenton Shuffle.  But, getting from Philly to DC run out of train track somewhere in Delaware or Maryland.  Driving is more of a pain too.

Are you kidding? It's well-maintained, has frequent train service, and has the highest speeds of trains on the entire Amtrak network.

A close second place is the rail between Bloomington IL and Joliet IL - it's been rebuilt to accommodate speeds up to 115 mph and has frequent Amtrak service, but sometimes gets slowed down by Union Pacific freight trains.

My wife did TRE-BOS on a "redeye" train (Regional 66) a few months back, and aside from it being crazy late getting from WAS to TRE (weather down south or something, I forget) she said it went pretty well, gave her some time to sleep, etc.  And yeah, the price was pretty good.  Not $5 good -- hell, at that price, Iʻll put the whole family on it! -- but a lot less than the $237 they wanted during the day.

Unfortunately, it sounds like their "night trains" (66 northbound, 65 and 67 southbound) -- which actually even have sleepers as part of the consist! -- are the first things to get cancelled when theyʻre short of staff.

Yeah, thereʻs about a 21-mile gap from where SEPTA dumps you in Newark, Delaware down to Perryville, Maryland where you can get a MARC train.  I donʻt think Amtrak even stops at Perryville, but Newark (DE) to Aberdeen, just south of Perryville, is only about $8.  Or you can take the Newark Connection bus to Elkton and the Cross Country bus to Perryville... still faster than walking.  (Slower than bicycling, though.)

From Grand Central in NYC, Metro-North will get you to New Haven, and CTrail can get you east to New London or north to Springfield, MA.  But the politicians in MA are still dithering about whether to extend MBTA regional rail service from Worcester to Springfield, so for now thatʻs another 48-mile gap, bah.  And from New London to Providence, RI (where you can also pick up MBTA to Boston) is a 55-mile gap.

You probably already know this, but check out NHK World's shows about trains (Railway Journal, Train Cruise). I'm very jealous of the rail they have.

Bah, just take a Chinatown bus. And if it doesn't catch fire or wind up in a ditch or something, you'll get there for cheap.

It'll be more expensive to take the two local trains than the Night Train. Not to mention it'll be much slower.

The MARC trains don't run to Perryville, MD except on weekdays. Even then they run a limited service (several trains per day). SEPTA has similar issues with Newark, DE since they only run limited services.

I want to go to DC this weekend and the only public transit options are Amtrak or bus. It's silly that we have high speed track just a few feet from our house, yet they don't run the trains to get us where we would like to go.

I like their trains... and geez, you could spend quite a long time trying to ride them all.  So far Iʻve only managed the Narita Express, the normal JR (or maybe KS?) stuff between Narita, Shinjuku, Haneda and Yokohama, the Osaka Loop Line, subways in Yokohama and Fukuoka, and the Kyushu Shinkansen, which is slow by Shinkansen standards at only 160mph, but still looks pretty.

I also like trains and subways and trams in the UK, France, Switzerland, Germany, Poland, Austria, Italy, Saudi Arabia, and of course the US.  But itʻs been several years since I left the part-time gig that was sending me all the interesting places, so this list is not destined to grow much, if at all.

This is definitely a response to the super cheap bus fares along this corridor from megabus and others. Guess they finally decided it wasn't a fad that would fade away. The buses even do their Philly stop basically right at 30th street station.

So, people who have more access to public transit than any other region of the nation get a deal. Meanwhile, traveling from Atlanta to Savannah requires changing trains in Washington D.C. and traveling from Atlanta to Los Angeles requires a three day lay over in New Orleans.

I believe Amtraks' board includes high ranking executives and investors of the automotive industry. Furthermore, it is the unwritten goal of Amtrak to turn as many Americans as possible against the notion of public transit. Prove me wrong.

Sin_City_Superhero: No Amtrak between LA and Las Vegas.  Why not?

The privately-owned train folks in Florida just this month reached an agreement with the unions that are going to build it, mostly right up the I-15 median.  And apparently itʻll be actual high-speed rail, unlike... (waves hands) all of this.   180 mph / 290 km/h.

Take a wild guess which section of track Amtrak owns outright and allows them to do this? Otherwise, EVVVERY train Amtrak runs is a night train because it's gonna take you 18 or more hours to get anywhere.
