And that $100,000 goes even further when you live across the state line in MS.

Plus they have to deal with Republican politicians who will attempt to prevent you from having the right to vote if you live in a majority Democratic area, like a city (as well as prevent cities from enacting progressive laws and policy, "states rights" of course).

My 10 acre homestead farm that's about 40 minutes from a state capital cost less to buy and less in property taxes than a 2 bedroom condo in those places. So enjoy your experience and stfu about how much it costs if you want to live there that much.

The average house price in the San Francisco Bay Area runs just over a million bucks.  Even with a six figure salary, you are lucky to be able to buy something.  A one bedroom condo goes for $500,000 or more.  It is possible to buy something cheaper.  If you don't mind that your neighbor is a crack house and your car will be trashed nightly.

Well, you have factor in the quality of life in the city.

Having lived in NYC, yeah, housing is insanely expensive, but no other city in the country offers as much to do as it: concerts, plays, museums, theater, food, etc. I was out and about every night and weekend - my tiny studio was just a place where I slept. And then the high taxes help subsidize things like the best public transportation system in the nation, the best library system in the nation, etc. Sure, places like Dallas might be great bargains, but it's Dallas.

When I lived in Texas, it was, indeed cheaper to live there.  The best situation tax-wise I ever had was when I was active duty, stationed in Delaware with a home of record in Texas.  Texas has no income tax, Delaware has no sales tax.

CSB: I lived on-base in a stand-alone three bedroom house, and as a very junior officer, my BAH was way less than rent in the area would have been for a comparable house, so having a house on base made tons of sense.  We had zero bills besides car insurance and telephone.  Cable, internet, electricity, water, etc were all included with the house.  My commute was about ten minutes on foot. I only made about $45K per year, but with two kids and a wife, my taxes were about zero and almost every dollar of that was take-home pay.  Without any bills, we lived very comfortably.  To top it off, we almost never bought groceries.  My wife was (and is) a great cook.  The other junior officers almost always came over for dinner, such that we had our family of four plus about 2-6 folks for lunch and dinner each day.  We didn't mind a bit.  After about a month, though, one of the guys saw us bringing in groceries and was like, "wow, that's a lot of food for four people."  The other dude that was with him said, "yeah, but it isn't much for ten people."  After that, the other officers stocked our pantry and fridge almost constantly.  They'd call up, ask, "can we have steak (or roast or spaghetti or whatever) this week, I'll do the shopping..."  We almost never paid for groceries for the next two years, and they even did the dishes.

How much are property taxes in Texas?
Texas Property Taxes
Property taxes in Texas are the seventh-highest in the U.S., as the average effective property tax rate in the Lone Star State is 1.60%. Compare that to the national average, which currently stands at 0.99%. The typical Texas homeowner pays $3,797 annually in property taxes.

Who cares about property tax when your 2000 sq ft house is worth $200k?

When I lived in NC, everything was taxed. I paid property tax on my car. Groceries were taxed. State income tax. And the sad part was, public services were worse. Roads were crap. Sidewalks were few and far between. Public transit was a joke - a bus every HOUR. DMV was run by Patty and Selma.

The only "unexpected cost" in TX is speeding tickets. There is a ton of speed enforcement out all the time in Texas. It is primarily what cops do. It is easy to avoid, because you just get used to never speeding.

That's a very smart move.  You could even drop your contribution in a few years and the larger early contribution will have the biggest impact on your retirement amount.  The magic of compound interest.

I bumped up my 401k contribution substantially, but I got a late start so I'm still concerned about how much I will have upon retirement.

Sounds a lot like California, but without the nice weather.

California has some of the highest overall taxes in the nation.  You might get a break on property tax, but all other taxes are on the top end of the nation.  Add to that the high cost of living around the cities, and that six figure salary doesn't seem all that nice.

Every single person in the US should be able to support themselves and their family on a single income.

The minimum wage is supposed to do this. It's not even remotely close.

The minimum wage is $7.25. It has been that since 2009. If it had kept up with inflation, it'd be $10.33, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. But I think the more salient way to look at it is how this article does it:  that wage is really only worth $5.14 today, because of the value the dollar has lost over the last 14 years--that is, what $7.25 could purchase in 2009 only goes as far as $5.14 today because of inflation.

My first off-campus job when I was in college paid $5.15 in 2000. That'd be worth $8.97 today, still $1.72 more than the nominal current minimum wage, and $3.82 more than the minimum wage is worth today.

Yeah, nothing besides high taxes happened in the past few years to cause a lot of people to move out of a densely populated city.

Also, you seem to have an antiquated view on NYC's population seeing as how it's been rebounding since everyone fled due to that deadly virus of taxation. I'd post a reliable source but presumably you would just call it fake news, so here's a source more up your alley:
