Besides the obvious family reasons, it would have been hard for them to find work. Canadian businesses don't like to hire unauthorized migrants like US businesses do. Why? Because Canada lets in such a large number of people already that many legal immigrants have been reduced to the same conditions of "16 hour shift of backbreaking labor 7 days a week, living with 11 other people in an employer-provided apartment" that American illegals face, with the added bonus that Canadian migrant workers can't get another job if they quit.
